After hearing about the humongous pac hali at GS6 that was too big for the gaff to handle I decided to be prepared should I ever hook into one. I got the basic idea from this guy:
I took a hard wood dowel and made a dado grove down the center. I drilled 2 holes right next to each other. One to secure the tip and the other to secure the loop at the end of the handle. I used 3/8 aluminum rod, 3 ft. each, but cut off the excess after I fashioned both the tip and loop. I made a 90 degree bend at the end of each rod. The end of each bend fits into the drilled holes while the rods rest in the channel with just a little bit sticking over the top. I then wrapped the dowel with rope and smeared Great Stuff all over the handle. Make sure to use either rubber or latex gloves. Spray the Great Stuff in your hand and rub it over the handle. Scrape off as much excess as you can. Not only does this glue the rope together it will make your harpoon float like a cork.
Here's the supplies needed to make the slip tip: 9/16 Brass tube, 1/8 ferrules and stops, 3 ft. of 1/16 plastic coated cable.
I heated up the brass tube and smashed one end in a vice. Then I put the smashed end back in the vice and bent the corners to fashion the spear tip. Sharpened the edges with a grinder. Cut the spear tip to about 5 1/2 inches long. Drilled a hole and ran the plastic coated cable through the hole and crimped the stops in a vice. Made sure the loop for the spear tip will allow the tip to rotate completely through the loop. Since it is a slip tip I use a rubber band to hold it in place which the video will explain. There should also be another line clipped to the free loop. It should be approx. 15 feet long with a section of shock cord and is clipped to your kayak. Spear the halibut all the way through. The harpoon pulls free but the slip tip remains through the halibut which is secured to the line attached to your kayak. Let the monster wear itself out and then haul it in for dispatch. Total cost was less than $30.

All you need is a shortened pole spear with a slip tip on it. They've been using them on boats in Ak for a long time. That and a bang stick.

Hey Mike when I went out with Sean I brought my shorty pneumatic speargun. I rigged the spearshaft break-away style to a couple crabpot floats so I could let go of it just in case........ Just say'n :smt003
