Eric,

From your descriptions and my memories from the past two years, this is the general area I'm aiming to paddle to, anchor up and explore as much as possible.

Zilla and I were over here and further North last year and it was a beautiful, special stretch of coast that I can't wait to get back to and jump in and check out underwater.

Optimistic that with both anchor and kelp clips we will be able to secure the yaks offshore in the kelp and then swim around to find our chosen depths...

Going to get my ab card, and new shooting line on the gun tomorrow after work.

Sincerely,

Jim

Jim,

Do you launch from the cove and paddle North to this point?

I know it gets deep quick around that area. How deep are you talking about?

Nothing wrong with a pole spear, I've taken hundreds of fish with em.  That being said, I am experimenting with a spear gun this time around.

That's the plan Antonio...I prefer yak diving to shore diving for sure... :smt001

I am hoping to focus on the 30-50 foot range, and maybe push my depths a little more if feeling good out there with Chris...we'll see!

Matanaska, I will have an ab biller 32 and a float line you are welcome to borrow!

I'll cheer you on while drinking a beer from the Abalone Point parking lot :smt001

You're in the right neighborhood, Jim.   :smt001

Here's a screenshot with a little Abking influence.  The area within the red perimeter is where I recommend as it's sheltered by the deeper reef and washrocks immediately to the WNW.  There's tons of fish here - if it's calm enough venture out onto the big washrock structure and down into 30' of bouldery bottom between the two main pinnacles.  I placed a line where there's a 2' deep x 2' wide slot on the bottom of 22' that's stuffed with 9 inchers.

I'll be watching over a beer from the parking lot with Antonio.   :smt001

You the man Eric.

I'll do my very best to put the intel to good use to get yummy treats for the campground and potluck.

Thanks again.

Jim,

Yeah at this point of my free diving experience 25' is my max with little to no bottom time. 30' would definitely be pushing it.

Gotta love those big SC boulders. I did a scuba solo there about 10 years ago and saw similar rocks formations loaded with big slugs but too deep for me for free diving.

I'll stick to swallower spots and a beer from the parking lot with Eric.

Antonio,

Yeah I have been diving a lot the past three years trying to increase my comfort and skills and feel like I have been moving in the right direction.

Have had a blast at Shelter Cove the past two years, but have only shore dove for abs and uni and really, really want to try and shoot some fish this year and explore off shore a bit more.

That is the main reason Chris and I are going up on Wednesday, to give ourselves three days to dive and explore before the tourney.

I know myself and will be useless on Sunday morning for pretty much anything but a breakfast beer and packing up.  :smt005

Sincerely,

Jim
