An Etienne sighting!! Yay! :smt008
Pacific halibut up by Black Sands Beach would be frickin awesome.
We are in .......only if you can promise the same "great" ocean conditions that we experienced last fall. :smt044
How far is Shelter Cove from San Jose anyways...?it's about 5-1/2hrs each way...if there is no traffic.
We may have to make it a tournee...that would be awesome!!! i have watched your videos so many times and always wanted to go up there for fishing.
1) Ocean Kayak Malibu 2 XL ..... would it be safe on the Shelter Cove waters?
2) Will a rod and reel rated at 15lbs. be adequate?
3) Is the area SHARKY?
4) Too many questions I know
5) Boss/Wife, can I bring her?
Abking.... Dude... looks more and more like you need some cool prizes and a fancy belt buckle....
1. I will try to upgrade to a rockfish/ling rod and reel, any recommendations as affordable as possible as I am a substitute teacher and the work up here is feast or famine?
2. what pound test should I spool it with?
3. terminal tackle suggestions, hook, sinkers, swivels?
4. bait?
5. lures?
6. anchor system? I have one do I need it?
7. do any of the crew bring instruments for camp jamming? I play bass, banjo and guitar.
Too many questions yet? I have more but they can wait till later.
by the way, yes I'll wear my PFD and heed the advice the ocean vets!
I will want to stay in the campground and not get a room.
6. Am I a pain in the A$$ with all these questions? I didn't get a sub call today so I'm home alone and jonesing to fish!
6. Am I a pain in the A$$ with all these questions? I didn't get a sub call today so I'm home alone and jonesing to fish!
Hey Tad! We all been there, so no your not a PITA! However you can do A TON of research on ALL of these topics by looking at the rest of the forums if your just looking for suggestions. IMHO a VHF should not be on the "wish" list, it should be on the "MUST HAVE" list!
1. isn't 10 ft kind of long?, I notice most like around 7 ft.
2. do you prefer spinning reels to conventional level wind bait casting?, I was thinking of a level wind.
3. A FF and VHF are on the wish list, open to affordable suggestions?
4. GPS can wait awhile, cheap compass suggestions?
5. I have farmer john neoprene waders, should I bring it or use it to stay warm?
6. Am I a pain in the A$$ with all these questions? I didn't get a sub call today so I'm home alone and jonesing to fish!
I like to go Phat-Pimp and stay in one of the hotels right along the rocks at Coral Point - probably The Tides Inn for around $120-$150/night.
I believe the Marina Motel has the lowest price in town. It locates right next to the camp ground and the boat launch so it's very convenience but I'm not sure about their pet's rule.
If the weather looks reasonable, it will be the wife and I to stay in the campground.
Does the campground have shower facilities?
My boys are a bit young (a 2-year old & a newborn) for this trip, so I'll be leaving the family at home. Most likely camping, but a hot shower and warm bed sure would be nice after a day on the water...we'll see.
The musician gene totally skipped me, so my evenings by the campfire will take the form of enjoying a few frosty beverages.

For the first timers or newbies, although this is not a challenging surf launch, ocean swells can be unforgiving so a paddling class and self-rescue practice is highly recommended before heading out on big blue. :smt006
This is an excellent point. Sounds like we'll have a mess of people, and everyone will be very helpful, but please do not show up without having made an effort to get yourself a little experience on open water. If we get lucky and the ocean is FAC that's one thing, but if it's bumpy and windy (more likely than not) it will be difficult for some to judge what to do, as those with much experience will batton down the hatches and go fishing.
For the record, I started the post and I welcome all to join in the fun, but I'm not advising anyone on how, when, where or why to fish, kayak, dive, swim, drink beer or other. All of those choices are the complete responsibility of the owner of the brain that makes them.

Hahaha! Nice one Ken.
But I think we can do better than that---how about 12 pages and an aborted mission?
There's probably a 70% chance that the swell forecast will be at least 8-10ft NW. Just a warning to the swell-challenged: you might have to make a personal decision of "go out" versus "no go."
Although, this time I am going no matter what. Even if NOAA says 20-25ft. I'm going! Granted, in that case, I'd have to settle for the best shore rockfishing in CA. But I'm going regardless!
Are you all really trying to beat last years 10 pages on the aborted Gimmie Shelter II? Only a few more pages to go.
Anyway, I don't know what kind of talk went down about a waiver or anything, but it does cross my mind that I wouldn't want to be responsible for any unfortunate occurrences... I'm kinda new to the Mega-Hookup. Any advice for a guy in my position? :smt001
Since folks are making arrangements for travel and accomodation, we should probably be clear on what days we plan to fish etc?
I say this because opening day is actually the Friday (May 15th). M'Lady and I plan to launch at first light on that Friday as well as fishing the Saturday before returing south on the Sunday.
check out the aerial photos of the area, you may be able to bag a ling from shore
Quote from: Great Bass 2check out the aerial photos of the area, you may be able to bag a ling from shore
In my experience, catching a lingcod from shore is not at all easy, but I did once catch 4 lings one day at Abalone Point (north end of the airstrip) - they were biting that day, because I've never had that kind of luck. The potential IS there. :smt001
Hey Eric,
This sounds great man! I'm going to check with my planning coordinator and keeper of the checkbook, but I'm going to try and make is for sure. I'll try to get DaveW wound up too..... :smt003

Are you going to be handling the booking of the group campsite?
I'm thinking now that with economic times being what they are that I won't ask the campground owner for any concessions.
And man, MByakker looks hammered in that second pic hahaha!
So-- on with the stimulus idea...where's the closest place that I can stimulate the economy with a purchase (beer).
i am leaning towards booking a room. i may be bringing my 6 year old daughter. she would like to know if there is anywhere she can shoot her pink daisy bb gun at soda cans.
I know it's still super early - but I will be bringing a dessert and maybe a salad of some sort for the potluck. I will also donate a few fish if there is fryer, by any chance. Everything else will be CPR.

I am in. How far is that from Gualala?
I can see the headline in local news paper: "Shelter Cove was invaded by kayak anglers" :smt003
It's getting serious. I love it. :smt001 I'm coming up with some ideas for a welcome pack to give out as well as prizes for a possible tournee. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm open! :smt006

How about a favorite rockfish lure exchange. Each angler brings their favorite lure with written tips on how to fish it. They go into a big bag which people draw blindly from. After selecting, the lure is shown to the crowd and the tips are read. Great way to learn new tactics.
scott
Abking, I booked the two-queen room at The Tides this morning. Julie likes our SC stimulus plan. When I get my check from Obama, I'll just pass it on to Julie. That what we're suppose to do isn't it????
Thanks for your stimulus plan to get us all moving. It's obviously a hit.
I have been boarded by them in the past off the cove, I was in a PB though.I hope so. It would really suck if they tried to board your kayak! :smt001
Fresh uni anyone? There are some huge urchins there.:smt045 oishiiiiii!
As far as liability, I don't think you have to worry about it unless it is a sanctioned event....I hope not. And hope you can make it, Matt.
I got the Fri, Sat,Sun,and Mon off for this event!! Really looking foreward to it!! Cant seem to get anyone on the phone for campground reservations. Gettin A little woried cause it sounds like this will be sold out.. As far as campgrounds go.
ABking,
I can bring 25 copies of my Bands (Jane Jones Band) CD "Sounds From The Next Stall" for prizes or gift bags if you think that would be OK.
We released it a year ago and was recorded in our home studio in the Lakehead area of Shasta Lake. It's available on itunes and CD Baby. All original songs in the rock/folk genres. I'm the bass and banjo player in the band, check us out at www.myspace.com/janejonesband
Lookin forward to GS III and sharing our music with the NCKA crew!

I'm kinda worried about the parking. Only enough room for like 25 cars, right? Maybe we can try to yakpool to the launch and a few might have to park above too.
For clarification: The video I added isn't created by me. Just found it from YouTube.it was shot, edited and posted by our king...Abking.

Do we need to declare a multi-day fishing trip with the DFG to keep two days' limit of abs or other fish? Or does that only apply to multi-days on the water?

I have been assembling my swimbaits and putting hooks on the jigs. I fall asleep everynight dreaming of the big fish of shelter cove.....I just have to watch all of Abkings videos until then.
How do you think the Halibut prospects will be that time of year? I know it is pretty early.

as the date nears, i"ll be down to make this trip. Ocean winds are(usually) at full strength in May. I don't want to get all fired up for another WX let-down.Way I see it is in three days there must be at least some window's of opportunity to get out and do some fishing. And if I am for some reason unable to do that, I'll just enjoy the good company!

They can blow strong anywhere near the Cape anytime but May is a safe bet if you had to pick a month

Hey... it's not illegal to "chum" the fish :smt044
It's funny for me to think about this now, but I was in the NAVY for 3 yrs active duty aboard the USS VIRGINIA out of Norfolk VA. The waters off cape Hatteras (S Carolina) is rougher than anything out here on the west coast, and we routinely sailed through them all the time. I :smt078 almost every time after the first hour or so under way, but after that I got my "Sea legs" and wasn't bothered by anything the sea could toss at my ship then. Today, I'm like a little girl scared to get seasick! :smt044 I know it'll happen I just don't want it to. Maybe being 30yrs older has that affect? You've got to be joking about Hatteras being rougher than out here. I spent a summer kayaking the entire Outerbanks. I criss-crossed all the inlets near Hatteras including what was an extremely treacherous paddle across the diamond shoals. I rode out a hurricane by kayaking up to Elizabeth city and cutting across the Great dismal swamp to dump out in Norfolk and paddle across the Chesapeake bay bridge to Maryland and then all the way up to the Potomac in Washington DC. It (Outerbanks) is no doubt seasonly a rough water area but come and paddle with me and Abking up here on the Lost coast and we'll show you what rough really is. I won't go into any further as to not scare off anyone but I assure you as a subject matter expert that there is no rougher stretch of Ocean anywhere in the lower 48 as there is off our coast up here. BTW Cape hatteras is in N. Carolina not south
Hans Lindeman crossed from England to the American coast in a klepper sailing kayak in the early 1900's. He went through two Hurricanes and thought he was invincible so he kept trucking towards S.America and got killed by the third Hurricane. Ed Gillet paddled from SoCal to Hawaii in the eighties and was nearly killed by several tropical storms with enormous seas. Jon Turk paddled from Japan across the Aleutians in the Bering sea to Homer Alaska and said he encountered seas the size of mountains during long exposed crossings. So while it is inconceivable that one could paddle in 50 ft seas there is no stretch of ocean that is out of the range of kayaking. I myself plan to paddle in my fishing kayak the entire California coast including Catalina and channel islands from crescent city to the Mex border. Anyone interested in coming along (summer 2011)
Eric, my apologies. I saw a thread jack coming and I participated. Excuse me. Craig

All I have to say is thanks Abking, for putting this out to us all. I really look forward to meeting you and the rest of NCKA. You sparked the fire, I just hope mother nature takes care of the rest.

Any lure tips Abking? I poured though your past pictures and videos to gleen all your secrets. I kept seeing this ugly beat up 6oz lead head with a curly tail on it! Obviously it is a decoy lure to hide your true fish mastery lure secrets :smt001 Do you loose alot of lures in the area? I am debating on how much to load into the tackle box.
I also have some jigs heads and flutter jigs with your name on them for putting this together. I will be taking a lot of trips to the coast this year, we will have to hook up for some fishing and diving.
I tried calling the campground today but couldn't get though. It might be the weather? I will try again tomorrow.
I chopped my huge cart down to fit into the rear tankwell. I can now just flip it upside down and strap it in. I pulled it around the yard and it seemed to work really well. That way I can walk my kayak down and don't have to worry about walking the cart back up...hopefully. It will also work nice up here at the lake.
Are we going to try and have a potluck? Some of the dishes I read about off the Elk threads look good!

Buy squid where you live and freeze it. Take it in an ice chest. That's what I do. Rockfish don't care if it's dead.
I buy the 3lb box of squid from Safeway (Seawave brand is best). These squid are generally larger and cleaner, as they're intended for human consumption. Anyways, I cut the block of frozen squid into 3 chunks and slip those into gallon ziplock bags. And just bring one ziplock per trip.
Hey guys!

I NEED A COAST TRIP BAD!!!
Today I got called in to sub (teach) at a Community Day School. For those that don't know of them, a school that consists of kids from public schools throughout the city that have been expelled from their "regular" school for a wide range of offenses. These kids (ages 6-12) are defiant, disruptive, abusive, foul mouthed, and probably unloved, well you get the picture.
Anyway, beside the usual difficulties of a class like this, today was a b!Tch :smt013 I had to call the police in on a kid that assaulted a female Teachers Aide by hitting, kicking, spitting and telling her to F_ ck Off Bit_h! Then 10 min. before the end of the school day, 2 boys break out in a fight, I step between them to break it up and one of the little blankety blanks kicks me in the shin and runs out of the room, over a seven foot chain link fence to freedom from the school grounds. I chased him to the fence while telling him to stop the whole way, but the punk got over the fence before I could grab him. :smt009 I told the teachers aide to notify the office, call his guardian, and to watch the class the remaining 5 minutes before dismissal. Then I ran to my truck to tail the fugitive while the office notified the authorities and his guardian , who turned out to be his grandma, while I stayed in touch with the office using walkie talkies.
When I caught up with the kid he was still running approx 3/4 mile from school, I called out to him to stop but he kept going, so I just tailed him for about 1/2 hour at which time his grandma catches up with me and tries to get him in her vehicle. The kid doesn't even stop for grandma! grandma tries for about 10 more minutes before he gets himself cornered in a cul de sac about 3 miles from prison/school. Out of breath, probably exhausted and now trapped, the kid sits down and starts crying. Grandma comforts the kid, calms him down and takes him home.
I return to the school, verbally report to the principal, write an incident report, and a summary of the day for the regular teacher. The grandma calls the school to thank me, I tell her "no problem, just another day in a teachers life". By the time I get out of there it's 4:00 (2:30 usually) and I need a DRINK, I rush home pour a margarita, and start to vent to my yak fishin brothers! (sorry Bros.) Now I ask you, did I earn my 100 bucks today? :smt002
Can you see why I need some Coastal Therapy? :smt004 I don't know if I can wait 50 days!
Tight lines all,

Nothing, they are just giving me samples for us to use to see if it gets you hooked enough to start buying their product. I will have their version of gatoraid that you mix in water and probably some of the gel packs for us to take on the water.
I am working on some giveaway items for the event and need some ideas for events:
1) first legal ling?
2) biggest ling of the day?
give me some ideas.
Greg

Right on! Any chance of getting someone like, say, Hobie or OK to sponsor?! :smt003
Matt - I like the idea of variety of fish too, but I don't want to encourage the bonking of a fish that would normally get released (since we'll be pretty shallow in general and some may not want to keep greenling, china, olive, gopher...) So I think the tournee format will be geared more toward biggest overall fish, biggest of species for cab, ling, red, black...whatever we want, variety of species caught, most fish released? We have to think it out...
:smt001
.......... 35 tens by your hot tub makes the jets feel better. :smt004

ONE TOURNEY OPTION>>>>>
I like MBF format with Big Ling by lenght takes all and the other donated prizes go in a raffle for all whom enter. You must be present to win requirment and you pick your donated prize off a prize table right after the raffle ticket is called.
even an option of a keep or don't keep tourney may work. You can keep a fish and get it measured, or submit a photo; longest fish wins? It would allow anglers to keep a few fish to eat, but may reduce some impact with that many yakers in one area
highly encourage folks to catch, photo, and release.
Thats OK Abking, the fish I catch will be hitchiking on a 20lb ling! :smt003 You better make my hawg trough extention go over 60+ inches........ Maybe that wide angled camera isn't such a bad idea..... :fish:

Greg would you guys happen to have '09/'10 WS Tarpon 160 demo model to try out at SC???? Curious to see what they did different and if it paddles any different than the T160i or T160 DH.

I will bring out a WS 140 or 160 if I get the new shipment in. I have sold out of the 09 boats fron my first shipment except 100s. The new boats have the same phase 3 seats as the sitins(tempest/tsunami). The big difference is the rigging options with the slide trax system and the orbix hatches. The hull is just as fast as smooth as the older version.
I am limited in carry room on my truck and will probable bring a trident 13 for everyone to try, my prowler big game, and a 12 foot Laird paddleboard. The trident will be setup with the stock rigging and anyone that wants can take it out. If I get the new shipment in I will bring my Big Game and a Tarpon out, along with the paddleboard.
Sin coast, I was wondering about maybe storing the firewood at the cove? Maybe at an undisclosed locale? Prior to the Gathering.
Hey Tad, I will hook you up with a fish whacker. I have a wood lathe, I can burn one out for you from some live oak or other wood. I want to make myself one anyways, and any excuse to make sawdust is a good one.

Matt,
I think you may be my long lost brother! JINX......on the lathe

Do you just saw through the block into three equal chunks? That's brilliant, never thought about that. Have always just peeled them off whole, one by one, like you would do with sticky licorice redvines.
Thats great ewb, you are like my long lost twin! I simply love making things, it adds so much more to the hobby. I got some wood out and hope to make some up tomorrow. I have some cotton rope to do some wrapped handles on a few. I was thinking of putting the wood burner to some as well then finishing with sparvarnish.
Matt
Beautiful work Matt. Very nice!
Abking, are you going to make some Panko Lingcod for us? I love that video. Where do you find your Panko? I does look good, especially deep fried! Do you use it on your Ab's as well? Mmmmmmm
keeping my fam occupied and happy
I spoke to Brian at Surf to Summit today and he is going to give some items for giveaways at the event :smt003 Probably a nice seat or two, I am also trying for one of the new fish bags.
Greg
OK! I just got my first NCKA sticker for my truck thanks to Kent/Harputmanuki.
I hope you guys are planning to sell sweatshirts and NCKA gear at the event.
Greg
I just noticed the t-shirt tread and I'm in on that one also :smt003
I will be attending with my wife Nina!!!!

Hello All.
I have site 101 booked from 05-14 through 05-17. Happy to share/split the site with anyone needing space to camp on.
Send me a private message if you're interested.
Joe Chou
Absolutely, Steve. The Cove is an excellent place to get started - very sheltered launch, opportunities close to launch, options... I say bring 'im. :smt001
Anyone have a campsite they wanna split/share?
Thx

Sailfish's daily countdowns alone will add two pages from today. So, let's all take a fresh guess at this. My money is 44 pages total when the clock strikes.
Anyone want the under/over? :smt044
So, Yakuza-Martin, what'd you decide? Friend's short-notice wedding or Abking's FreeLove OceanFest BootCamp?! :smt003
"Iffy"?!! Don't be cursing us, Phil! I've had a very good feeling going about epic conditions... :smt007

British (Italian) = genetically pessimistic. Especially since I paid out for a vacation rental. Even if it's hurricance force and pouring rain, we're going to Shelter Cove.
Heavy metal, groovy. Is the bottom catchy?
BTW, I asked about # of cars allowed in campsites & they said they "like to have only 1 car in the spaces." So, it sounds like it's negotiable; of course, let's keep it within limits & maintain respect for the proprietors. :smt001
There is an additional parking area for other cars.
Will anyone have tackle for sale, i have nothing for the ocean!!!!!!!
Feel free to PM me!!!
Badog
OK I am starting to get pretty excited about the trip! Are any of you besides myself Abking and sailfish? Gotta keep this thread alive... Damn it Eric we need some more videos!!!....Andy

The rest of the story: when we meet I'll tell you (around the campfire w/ several cold beers) all about my plan to get this done properly. It'll require another trip later in the summer, Roleez, and some 2 pound balls (not lead!). :smt003
Sonny - that would've been a Cali-Hali, right?
Hey - we could hire one of the local charters for a mothership hali-trip...
a 199 lb pac halibut while fishing in a kayak. Towed him around a cove til he could beach the kayak and drag the flying carpet onto shore.
I am planning on bringing a Trident 13, a tarpon 100, a mesto surf kayak(for the kids to play with), and a 12 foot laird paddle board, as well as my prowler big game.Bigger Truck :smt003
Should I change anything?
Makes me yearn to smell of campfire, have everpresent beer breath and good food stuck between my teeth.
this one diver had sought out a large lingcod at Abalone Point, and he was feeding it!

Guys/Abking - I got 3 square danielson crab pots (fully rigged). Should i bring them? If so, how much line should I set them up with? Happy to donate any keepers to the group meal in exchange for help setting the gear?
Couple questions: without making this into a big debate, what are the best lure/jig colors for rockfish?
What's your favorite scent product for the ocean? Old Spice is a wrong answer!
Maybe I'll try the Old Spice!
Sailfish, aren't we missing something from you today...?

The campground band is shaping up nicely,
Danglin and guitarzan: guitars
FishinMike: mandolin
Banjotad: banjo, bass guitar (if the campsite has electric?) amp turned way down of course.
Anyone else want to join the band?
Who can sing? (I can't and won't)
Song ideas guys?
I am a folk strummer. I may bring my mini Brooks, or else a Taylor. If s/o is bringing an amp I would bring the black Martin, but acoustically it sucks.
Stones "Gimme Shelter" of course
maybe some Neil Young,Dylan

Ok,I just got spase 72 reserved.Im starting to get my gear togeather and finding it hard to contain myself,Im really looking forward to this.I dont know where its posted, but Im in for 1 xtra lg ,Thanx Abking and looking forward to meeting you and all.
AB peeps...I was thinking of renting a wetsuit and some fins and tag along when you all go ab diving. I don't intend on collecting any abs but I wanted to tag along and watch the underwater madness. Is that a crazy idea? I have some scuba exp so I won't be a hassle.
I will be bringing my spare wet suit, it is a farmer john and a bit tight on me. I am about 6ft 180, also have hood, gloves, and mask, but not booties or fins. Oh yeah and a weight belt with say 25lbs on it. I can also pour weights if someone needs some. Just let me know aprox weight and do it soon. :smt001
We're on the home stretch, Homies! :smt003
I'll be poosting quite a few weather outlooks and swell forecasts in the next week...
(the forecast below is for Eureka, so Cove temps should be up to 10 degrees warmer... :smt001)

Come on Abking. Is this some kind of tease. Temperatures and sky conditions be dammed. We want wind and swell forcasts. Lets get to the point here.
I know, I know! I wanted swell forecasts too, but my best ones only go 6-7 days out, so I have to hold off a couple of days on that. At least we get to see a little sunshine on the horizon in the 10 day weather outlook. Patience, patience... :smt001
Eric B - "hanging out" for the underwater madness IS the underwater madness!! No reason at all to harvest anything to have fun out there. If you're hanging out and seeing too much good stuff I'll put my camera in your hand! :smt001
Here's some footage fresh from the Cove... :smt001OMG Eric! That video just got me ALL PUMPED UP!!! :smt083 I'm thinking I may wanna try and take Thurs off and show up a day earlier! :bounce: Guess I'll give the camp a call and see if I can extend. :smt044

the wifee decided to sit this one out, so it's gonna be a boys' wknd!
Here's the forecast for 5/15-17. I got it from the future. Sweet huh?
49NM SSW Eureka CA
Pacific Ocean
05-15-2009 Friday: NNW wind 18 to 20 kt. Patchy fog before 11am. NW swell 10-12 feet. Wind waves 4 ft. Pat gets skunked for being a smarta$$.
05-16-2009 Saturday: NW wind 20 to 24 kt. Patchy fog. NW swell 12-15 feet. Wind waves 4-6 ft. Chance of showers. Pat catches a 4 inch gopher.
05-17-2009 Sunday: N wind 18 to 22 kt. NW swell 10-12 feet. Wind waves 4 ft. Showers likely. Pat catches gopher flu.
More good news (for me): the wifee decided to sit this one out, so it's gonna be a boys' wknd!
Thanks to you jerks, I just had an epiphany....sorta.
I am noticing a distinct similarity between my quest to avoid gopher rockfish and Carl Spackler's quest to eliminate gophers from the Bushwood Country Club golf course (Caddyshack).
License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote.
I will be bringing an extra weight belt with about 24lbs on it. I also have some loose weights too.
Dom
Sweet I'll keep my eyes peeled for the post. With all the pretty kayak colors its gonna look like someone spilled a bag of skittles! A rainbow of fishing fun!
I am close to getting some dive gear secured. I found a few postings on Craigslist for fins and wetsuit. I am gonna check them out this weekend. If they are not my size there is a dive shop that I can rent a suit from. Since they don't rent fins that is really my target. Also does anyone (that is coming) have a weight belt (and weights) they can let me borrow? Or I can trade for a custom made exotic wood knocker and some home made knife jigs.
OK, I've see the amazing knockers :smt007 , the plastics, and the knife jigs in different post.
Can we start a swapmeet thread or something so I can get an idea of how much money I need to borrow from my wife? lol
You guys have skills!
Another Note, are there any good Beginner/intermediate Mountain Bike Riding out from the campground area?
It would be really kool if there was a path that followed the coast line....
Looking for activities for the fam while I'm dumping my Kayak........ :smt003
Shopping for a vacation home
So, the long range forecast is showing some really nice water for the opener... not that I want to jinx it, but I can hardly contain myself. :smt001
Who else is planning to drop crab traps?
I have lots of rockfish carcasses for bait that never got used last year and my wife would love to get them out of the freezer.
Is there any interest in dropping traps Thursday afternoon or evening? I will try to get up there early enough to do so (especially if others are interested) rather than try to get them out during the opener.
let me know.

Another good quote:
I have to laugh, because I've outsmarted even myself. My enemy, my foe, is an animal. In order to conquer the animal, I have to learn to think like an animal. And, whenever possible, to look like one. I've gotta get inside this guy's pelt and crawl around for a few days. Who's the gopher's ally. His friends. The harmless squirrel and the friendly rabbit.
Strong work with the directions.
Is the exit off 101 signposted "Shelter Cove" or just Garberville?
Scott - I don't think the launch will be an issue. There's plenty of room for all. :smt001
Is there launch access from the Tides Inn?
Is there launch access from the Tides Inn?
The kayaks are plastic and not that heavy. My concern is whether or not my truck will pull up the ramp with the freakishly huge lings I'm going to catch.
This size?
I had some stuff to take care of this weekend, but.... am riding the fence
Is there a site I could share if I change my mine by Thursday?
How long is the walk from the campground down to the launch. Is is rolleze-able? I am just going to bring a strap and strap the cart onto the kayak, or slip it in the bow. It it tight but will fit in my P13 front hatch.

No PBR for me - I like Al's spread. :smt007No exchange needed for the AbKing! I'll be making a "donation" to his "cause" :smt005
Although I'm a snob for Sierra Nevada and will have a case of coldies at the ready at all times... :smt004
I think the 'beer exchange' will likely totally overshadow the gear exchange! :smt005
I can't seem to locate the gear swap thread for GSC III (moderator please feel free to move this). If anyone has a cheap-o small bait caster that they wanna unload for a $5 or $10 (or trade for a knocker, dressed hooks, or knife jigs) can you bring it. I am trying to make a sabiki rig and need a basic reel that will fit the bill.

I have a "perfect" bait caster for your Sabiki rig. I'll make a fair trade for some of your knife jigs.
I can paint a couple of watercolors and frame them...
Does that mean you're coming then?

The latest weather synopsis - gathered from multiple sources...
Friday, ah Friday... it starts out a bit nasty - I'll be ready to scan the conditions and go back to bed this day because I see the forecast holds significantly nicer water in the evening than in the morning... Not to suggest you shouldn't ought to be ready for dawn patrol that day, but that's what I see right now... Plenty of meeting, greeting, getting comfortable and down right partying will go down this day, so it's possible I may save my fishing nut until Saturday... possible, not probable at this point!...
Because... Saturday, oh, Baby, Saturday! That day and Sunday too look so flat on the swell model! OMG, I don't think I could've wished for better. If this holds and the winds are light... we're in for epic Cove - I'm talking EPIC...
I'll stop. I'm sorry. I won't push any more... tonight. :smt003
Saturday will be a day for the ages. :smt045

Yeah, the WX forecasts for that part of the coast are always harsh. To quote my new favorite sports-interview line: “It is what it is.”

the weekend forecast actually looks nice to me. I've berm in worst conditions fishing the central coast. The sat and sun forecast looks good. 4ft swell are nothing. I will actually paddle out Friday morning also. We will probably have a little window to fish Friday. Just paddle into the direction the wnd is coming from. Let it push you back to the cove when its time to turn in.
I will brave the worst conditions. Who with me?
Eric - My final post on thread. What?! NO! You cant stop posting Scott!! How are we going to make it to 50 pages if people stop posting?!?!?!
Anyone need a copy of the spring/summer Kayak Angler magazine?
Anyone need anything else last minute? I am working Thursday and can grab and bring for Friday.

Howdy All,
I am a littel late jumping on this band wagon but I have been waiting to see if I could get away for this and the wife has ok'd it. I will be heading up on Friday. Just wondering how deep some of the areas we will be fishing along this part of the coast? Does it drop off deep really fast? How long a paddle do most of you guys plan on taking for this Epic fishing journey? Just trying to get a feel as to what to expect. Look forward to meeting everyone.

Thanks for reminding me of the terror I lived on the waters. I loved it so, I did... inbetween anticipating the next toss. But really, thanks. When I told my parents about it tonight my mom said boy that sounds scary were you afraid? I said, yes! But that just makes it all the more amazing of an experience and memory and one I will never forget (and yes, of which I desire more :smt001).
