Title: Zero Retention for the Bronzespotted Rockfish in 2009

In 2009, another rockfish species was added to the zero-retention list: the bronzespotted rockfish. This is in addition to canary, yelloweye, and cowcod.

So I figured this would be a good time to review the bronzespotted rockfish. Although I have not seen one on this site, it doesn’t mean we won’t encounter them in the future. Take a moment to review the fish ID resources and familiarize yourself with the bronzespottie, as I am now going to call them.

Eeesh, that looks a lot like a copper to me, right color and the bars on the face. Having never heard of a bronspottie until right now, I would probably have kept one if i'd caught it!

Yeah I haven't seen any caught by NCKA yet. I spoke w/a DFG biologist and he suggested that they are deeper than we fish. And they are generally found with cowcod. Chances are we won't catch a bronzespotty unless we fished 300ft in SoCal.

Much, much, much deeper than that.  No one down here has ever caught one.  Best guesses are around 1000ft.

Seriously, how do they know they need to be protected?  This is a joke, right?
