i have a standard horizon.whichever one you get make sure it floats.i was busy about worrying about price and that its submersable i didnt even bother to check if it floats, well mine doesnt i thought it did :smt012
A floating unit may be nice, but a VHF should be leashed to your PFD or PERSON at all times.  Which to me means it doesn't matter if it floats.

Please, for the safety of all, do not buy Cobra radios... :smt009

Leashed is always best.  A group of us managers got together for a weekend up @ Tahoe and did some lite rafting.  Lost one of the floating radios overboard.  Needless to say, I'm sure it floats but 0 luck finding it.  I keep mine inside my inflatable PFD but still need a leash just in-case.  Good point!

Is there much of a discernible difference between an Uniden MHS75 (84 bucks) and Standard Horizon HX290 (124 bucks) other than the floating part? I plan to leash mine to PFD regardless, and trying to save as much as possible.

I like the quality of the Standard Horizon's.  I have a basic 280 model, but they are good radio's.
