How much kayak fishing have you done? Do you have all the safety gear mentioned in the ocean safety topic?

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

With the ocean always go with someone ( Buddy system) and be sure you have all your safety gear. And if you don’t feel comfortable with the conditions when you get there don’t get in.  The ocean is unforgiving

Welcome to the community.  Safety is part of the culture here, so expect to get lots of advice after stating that you've never been on the ocean and are heading there this weekend.

Here's my advice:

- make sure you can self-rescue before going out;
- dress for immersion;
- take a fully charged VHF radio and navigational aids like compass and GPS;
- don't underestimate the wind, swell and current - not to mention fog.

Best of luck.  :smt001

Well I have only been in inland waters.  I have a good vest as I jetski at lake Berryessa every weekend all summer.  I don't have a radio.  If it's not super nice I'll be staying on the beach. I will read the suggested articles.  Thank you all.  Looking forward to kayaking with anyone who wants to on saturdays.

I have a radio I can loan you. Do you have a wet suit or a dry suit?
