Title: Salmon
Post by: ulisesv2013 on September 25, 2016, 09:28:17 PM
Hey guys any ideas on how to hook up on a salmon I know it's late in the season but I'd wanna try it before it's too late. Ima be fishing out of HMB with a paddle kayak no trolling motor yet.
Thanks in advance

Trolling motor = you, and if you think an actual motorized boat is the way to go then there's really not much use asking for advice on a kayak forum.

As for ideas about how to hook up on a salmon, it's important to read and carefully study the details of all the reports.  If you've been doing that then you should already have a list of things that work as far as tackle and bait, trolling speed and depth, temperature to look for, presence of bait, birds...etc.

Here's my best advice:  put an acceptable offering (there's many of them) at an acceptable depth at an acceptable speed (those vary) for as much time as you can (8 hour day is nothing to a dedicated salmon troller), and you will have a chance at a hookup.

Remember, there are MANY experienced fishermen on this board and elsewhere who have done all of what I've advised and still not hooked and landed a king salmon much of the time.  That's why it's so alluring - it's not easy.

Good luck.

Since you're you'll be in HMB.... walk down to the docks, look for Sharky's boat and say, "One please..."   That's your guaranteed hook up.   :smt005

Seriously, have you tried the search function at all?  It's amazing what you'll find.

+1 to what LolitaEric said.  If you want to know what is happening at hmb, read the million hmb salmon reports that have been posted in the past weeks.  Dont just be a screen watcher, actually read the reports and absorb the information.  Still more questions?  Use the search function, I guarantee you will find your answers in there somewhere.

This.

There's been more salmon reports and information posted this year than just about any other year that NCKA has been around. It's all right here for you. What more do you want?

No offense, but you seem like the type that won't be here for very long. I highly doubt anyone is going to give you much advice other than what has already been posted and to use the search function.

Nah.

I was just screenwatching like normal, but I felt compelled to talk about this.  There isn't any real reason to dis on a guy who wants to use a trolling motor for whatever reason.  Reminds me of the shade thrown on the guys using hobie mirage drives a few years back.

There's several kayaks marketed now with electric motor options.  Old guys, disabled guys, lazy guys, whatever.  They are no less fishermen.  Don't be Jason going off on how SIK are far superior and no one else is doing "real" kayaking.

Don't misunderstand, OP still annoys the shit out of me, but this is definitely not the reason why.  We don't know why he want to use a trolling motor, and we shouldn't judge him for the mere desire to do so.

I think Smoky (Smoksters? Smizzokie on da Wizzattur? Lord Smoke of Waterton?) is the voice of the community here. When I saw what the new threads were this morning, it seemed like easily 1/4 of them were salmon reports. It's like all we talk about here! You post suggests that you're not reading them or are ignoring the info in them. Show us you're reading an using the info that the community is already putting out there by asking more detailed clarifying questions and you'll probably see a better response.

There is an immense amount of salmon-related information available on this forum. I personally have dedicated a lot of time to sharing advice, tips, techniques, etc... I love sharing the knowledge I've built up over the last few years, but I don't love the thought of retyping it in this thread.

That has never stopped me before.

OP is rightly getting stripped down for this after his gawd awful goodbye post, I just don't want people throwing out the baby with the bath water. There's a couple LCKA regs who use motors on their kayaks. Guys that I like and that I fish with. They don't post here much but I would not hesitate to give them anything. I've also been with both those guys on long paddles without motor assist and seen what it takes out of them. I get not allowing motors and sails in tournaments but just because they use them at other times doesn't matter either here or there.

Kangaroo court is one of my favorite posting strategies. I'm not as good at it as, say, bmb, but I don't think I'll stop now.

You gotta give ulises credit though for generating some of the more lively threads in the last few weeks.  Given the  membership the chance to continually bash him or help him, I'm kinda surprised at the continued bashing, everybody says stupid shit, maybe even twice in his case.

I guess it's kinda like a right of passage, you (he/she) learns from it,

As far as turtles, there's some huge red sliders (invaders) in the creek up behind Shadow Cliffs. Maybe suitable as judges for Crash Court, although their lineage may bring their impartiality into question,

But I digress............

Your question was "how to hook up on a salmon".  This is a topic that has been posted about for many years.  Being that you are a new member to the site (Sept 2016), it would be a reasonable response of a seasoned member to point you to the search box or a link to a former post of relevance.

As for topics spinning off in a tangent about turtles ... It happens on here more often than you'd think.

I’m a noobie on this forum too -- and it’s been amazing. I literally posted 10 times in 1 minute just so I could be able to search in the “Members Only” forum knowing all of you have a wealth of knowledge that I could hopefully learn from. I’ve read and read and read...and it’s been super helpful.

A quick story: I went out in HMB after researching a ton on this site. I spent hours reading reports and felt like I knew the area like the back of my hand. I paddled out with confidence only to be humbled by the mighty rockfish. I fished near the ‘green can’, the ‘red can’ and all other ‘cans’ I could possibly find on my navionics app….I might as well have been fishing in a ‘garbage can’ because I didn’t catch squat. Yes, I know, many of you are snickering because I didn’t even catch a RF or a ling (thanks to NCKF I even know some acronyms) but for someone brand new to pacific kayak fishing...well, it’s tough.

This past weekend I went out with ulisesv2013. You guys may badger him for asking simple questions, but I for one can tell you that research isn’t enough sometimes - someone offering to help makes a big difference. Without hesitation, ulisesv2013 took us to his ‘secret’ spot (one that took him many trips to find alone paddling) and we proceeded to limit over the course of a few hours. It was an amazing trip and his generosity was the difference.

Forums are for helping and sharing information, right? If we want to brag, let’s start a forum to show the size of our hands relative to Crash.

My .02 -- if you made it this far, goodnight.

You made some good points but it was all lost with this last comment.

I have been a part of talking crap and receiving it.  But usually with folks I have been out with and feel comfortable with.  You can usually tell the difference.  Either way it is sad to see people getting angry or upset with comments on a forum or posting that they think others shouldn't.

It's just a bunch of fisherman posting on safety, equipment, fishing reports and misc things others may find interesting.  I am teaching the next generation (grandkids). How to fish and hope they enjoy it as much as me.  JAOTY encourages them and family is a big part of this community.  Please consider this when posting as I will stop referring people to this site unless there is a big disclaimer that tells them to just look past the BS and find the useful posts.

That's not really supposed to happen but it's totally rational to do it and I probably would to if I was a new poster.

Measuring dick size is pretty juvenile.  You were doing fine coming to your friend's defense until you got here.  You could have just asked to meet me after school so we could sort things out, but I guess you wanted to be original.

Usually Crash and I don't see things eye to eye but for the first time, I agree with everything he has said!   :smt005

Its becoming very clear that fate has brought you together with ulisesv for a good reason.  You guys can measure hand size with each other.    :smt044

Uh yeah ... don't do that.  Post stuffing is not allowed.

Tips and are easy to come by.  Hot spots and more than just tips are earned.  You don't just get them by asking a question.

Forums are for helping and sharing information, right? If we want to brag, let’s start a forum to show the size of our hands relative to Crash.

What?  You've been here how long?  And you want to dictate what this forum is about?

This forum is NOT a PSA where any Tom, Dick, and Harry can just show up and get help.  It's has evolved over time into a community.  A community that is very open and willing to help, but you get out of it what you put into it.  Respect the community and it will respect you.

How many times can you say you could care less in one thread, yet still keep coming back for more?  Here, let me help you.

U, at this point, you're just trolling, and a glutton for punishment.

-Allen

And for all of you commenting on how there's information thank you for letting me know but that wasn't my question I asked for ideas not to tell me where those ideas are at if you don't like what i post don't comment. It's simple all the negativity is not needed. I could careless if there's a post where as long as you follow every instruction you'll land a fish. I could careless if there's a post about an exact lure to use and you'll be guaranteed to catch at least one fish. I simply asked for some ideas and I added that I had no trolling motor on my kayak in case some of you use it while fishing for salmon. I mean really guys your all making it seem like I want someone to hold my hand and I've never asked for such thing. Wanna share your ideas. Cool thank you but if you have no correct answer to what I've asked and I mean specifically for what I've asked, simply shut the fuck up and don't post on anything I put up/ post.

And lastly for those of you who don't like me or think less of me cause of my posts either block me or deal with it I'm tired of all of you blabbing your mouths. I fish frequently from HMB if your problem is personal we can meet up and talk it out or whatever. I could care less at this point. I appreciate all of you whom have helped me and I'm glad to have helped any of you in any way possible

“Careless” with no space means to be negligent or reckless because one hasn't put enough forethought into or isn't paying attention to something.

“Care less” with a space means to that one isn't interested.
