If you can afford it, why not unless you feel like it's too bulky.  If it's a choice between one on my VHF or one in my FF, i'd go with FF because it gets more use.  I already carry a backup waterproof GPS in my ditch bag, not that it would help if I couldn't radio for help, so I also have a backup vhf in there too.

As far as GPS, the GPS in inexpensive combo devices like VHF or fish finders are really more backup devices and not marine navigation devices.

Can you expand more on why you think a combo fishfinder is more of a backup device and not a marine navigation device?

Every time I turn on my FF, it has a warning message that indicates something like "WARNING this device should not be used as a navigational aid..."
To make the warning go away, I have to hit Enter to accept it.  :smt002
