Glad my open water swim season is done! Ho lee phook!

:jawdrop

Wow! It is both awesome and horrifying that we share the ocean with a fish like that. I'm glad someone is keeping the pinniped population in balance.
A video of the same thing happening off bodega head was posted here just a few days ago. In the background you could see a reef break I've surfed...
-
Dislike how the vid is labeled an attack. I think the shark just thought it was brunch lol. Other than that, wow. Incredible. I bet the guards back in the day taunted the inmates by baiting ol whitey lol
-
Wow, a GWS in the bay!
My main problem with the video, though, is the vertical frame. Hold your phone sideways!

THANK YOU !!! Landscape, folks. Landscape !

Lost_Anchovy and I trolled past quite a few swimmers between Fort Mason and Aquatic Park this morning.
-
Wow! :jawdrop Makes sense though, with all the sea lions living on the docks . Just a matter of time before the landlord came to collect back rent.

When seals get chomped in Aquatic Park, then ima quit swimming altogether. Usually its the rabid seals biting swimmers lol

Ho Lee Shit! right in the bay!!
The YEAR OF THE GWS!! :smt009
-
Pretty neat, but, nobody had a rod out? What is wrong with our kids today........ :smt011
-
We saw a whole bunch of swimmers in the bay on Sunday. I asked a few if they heard of the GWS at the Rock and they said..."SO??" Braver than me. :smt003
-
Amazing . . . and . . . slightly disturbing...
-
SO?!?!......so let me please hop onto your nice kayak, NOW!

Anybody got advice on how to live-bait rig a sea lion?

Now the mystery of what happened to those escaped convicts who were never found is solved!

I am getting a shark shield first chance. Saving up right now.

That shark must be a vacationing Aussie! See that Launch! Kayak would be flipped no problem.... :smt119 :smt103 :smt101 :smt120 :shark
-
......said it was only a lil'10ft'r = = YIKKES!!
-
Someone needs to remind that shark that it's too small (10ft) to be eating seals. It should wait until it's at least 12 to 14ft, like the researchers say. :smt003 I think the 15ft estimate was more likely to be true.
-
Salmon shark. Clearly.
-
Wow, that was just ... wow. :smt009
-
10 footer my ***. that thing is at least 12.

It's hard to tell how long it is when the mouth is open...! :smt044

Some years ago, my young daughter asked me if sharks live in the bay. I replied, oh yes very much so, but mostly just sleepy sand sharks etc. She asked, what about GWS's? I replied, no one sees them, but I know deep down they come into the bay. She asked where? I said Alcatraz probably!
I've always considered the waters of that area to be more like the ocean than the bay. This is my confirmation, and to all who called me crazy for believing this, I told you so.
-
i do agree, but they have said that this is the first documented and seen......i wonder when one will make its way into the carquinez straight, following seals that follow salmon. I am sure the ocean salt water is making its way VERY FAR into the bay waters. With no/less freshwater coming from the rivers, the bay is probably 80% ocean right now.
-
I thought it was documented a long time ago that gws come into the bay, with the tagging studies.

yes you are correct,,,,but it is the first documented attack in the bay.
im sure my native forefathers used to witness this long ago, but they did not have a written language. :smt003

From the article:
"We tend to think of white sharks as animals that wander oceans aimlessly," said Block. "What we're learning is how selective a predator they are. The go up to 4,000 miles in a trip and come back to within half a mile of where they left."
suggesting that anyone within a half mile of a reported shark sighting or predatory event has an increased chance (however small) of witnessing a repeat event. For all yous that insist on fishing da Bean

There is at least one earlier record of a fatal shark attack in the Bay from 1926. Also, an 18-year old swimmer was fatally attacked while swimming off Baker Beach just outside the Gate in 1958/9. His girlfriend swam out and pulled him to shore.

That's outside the Gate - doesn't count!

yo Pisk,
all those years of yakguiding bay swims, what were some of the sentiments you encountered re: whitey - didn't know, didn't care, doubt they're around, etc.?

He was the one in the kayak. it was the other idiots who were swimming in the water.

Most seem to take it in stride but seems the general feeling was that the bay is safe - I don't think most people thought the landlord collected in the bay. I'd guess that a few people will think twice after seeing this but most open water swimmers are a little cray, anyway...right?
In reality, I doubt there's much danger with group swims - whitey seems more enticed by the lone morsel. Wanna do another crossing? :smt002 :smt003

Just make sure you are not the slowest swimmer in the group. :smt002
