Title: Raymarine Dragonfly 7PRO vs Lowrance HOOK2
Post by: woland on January 10, 2018, 12:02:49 AM
Hi

I'm looking at buying my first serious echo-sounder+GPS. My main purpose is feature finding and also being able to locate the same spot every time.

I have been recommended the Raymarine Dragonfly 7PRO but I see the Lowrance HOOK appear to be cheaper and I can get a discount on Lowrance.

Any advice?

Kind of in the same market right now, although I'm after a second finder, not my first.

The Raymarine units do not display the time or the battery voltage.  I don't care about the time - I wear a watch - but I want to keep track of the battery voltage, so that was a deal-breaker for me.  YMMV.

The 4 and 5-inch HOOK2 finders use a stupidly big and clunky mount for the head unit, but the 7-inch and larger head units use the same mount as  the older Elite and HOOK units.  I'm looking for a 5-inch screen and that new mounting system on the HOOK2 is also a deal-breaker for me, but again YMMV.

I've never seen them side-by-side, but I'm told the Raymarine display is brighter and sharper (clearer) than Lowrance displays.

Would be good to know what kayak you own or plan to use so someone can comment on how you'd have to mount the transducers.

I just watched a video showing a ram mount adapter for the hook2 unit. So you’re not limited to only using the one in the box.

You sort of are limited to the Lowrance mount.  The RAM mount attaches to it.  That was the deal-breaker for me, too.

I haven’t seen it in person and maybe it has changed. This is what I saw on YouTube at the 5:00 mark.

I just got a new one for my new kayak. I ended up getting the lowrance elite-7 ti2. Picked up the ram mount for it. Very nice unit and wouldnt go back to my raymarine dragonfly 7 even if raymarine paid me. Deffently worth the $!
