Well maybe I should try it again but I just didn't think temp was something I needed to monitor constantly, and since it took up so much room I'm less distracted with the temp function off.

In that price range your choices are limited to essentially one unit.  The Eagle 245 DS is BOMB proof and accurate.

I need to pick one up too and I like the cost of this one along with the previous posts about GPS dual units and Color units can really go through the batteries.

Do you recommend the Portable or Standard 245 DS?

I still don't quite understand the difference after looking at Eagle's Web site.

the portable has a suction cup on the transducer and a base that you can wrap the cable around.  If your going to mount it on one yak, the regular is the way to go.
