Hello all,
I currently have a tandem sit on top kayak.  I'm considering purchasing a used pedal kayak, i.e. hobie outback or revo 13.  For those of you that have bought used, what should I be inspecting and looking at when checking one out?
Thanks!

Leaks around the scupper holes.

Check the mirage drive area/slot also and make sure there are no cracks/damage visible. Pedal the drive with your hands a number of time to see it's smooth and working.

Unless you buy it from a friend or someone you knew or from a NCKA's brother/sister, make sure you test ride it and look for water inside the hull afterward to make sure there's no leak before buying it.

If the previous owner has mounted any track systems or rod holders, look for any stress cracks around the attachment points.

Broken teeth and cracks on the drive. Frayed drive cables. Smooth drive operation.

Keel wear, scupper cracks, hull deformation from improper storage.

Steering operation/smoothness. Rudder lines for wear.

Wear/holes/damage to seat.

I purchased 5 used Hobie kayaks and been happy with my purchases.

All comments above are very critical.
Make sure you flip the kayak upside down to check the bottom carefully for any cracks, damages, and repair spots.

Finding a good used kayak requires patience and time to search.  Do not rush into buying something you are not sure and feel free to ask an experienced kayaker for help.

You can repair mirages drives easily but it will be very difficult to repair the hull.
The best time to buy used kayak is winter and the best time to sell is late spring based on my experiences.
