Randy and I went to Rancho Leonero and I shot these fish (and more) with my new Olympus 770SW.  It's good to 30 feet.  I hope to start shooting for dinner this summer....... :smt003

Nice work Pat!I'm sure you now know how hard it is to get the fish to pose.

Nice Pat!  If you can take pics of fish, shooting with a speargun them will be a piece of cake!

Do you have a copy of Photoshop?  Water filters the color spectrum so quickly that you need to do a couple steps to bring the colors back.

This is the quick(lazy) 2-step procedure(crop/levels), but it'll give you an indicator of what I mean.

Thanks for sharing your great pix, Seabreeze! Isn't it fun playing with toys such as a new camera? :smt003

YES!  That's what they looked like.  Can you send a link or something to tell us how you made the pictures so bright?  I was expecting the camera to do this as it has an underwater mode.  Oh well, I will do after dive corrections if I can.

Those Mexican Goatfish are so cool.  They have barbs on their mouth that they use to stir up the sand and find food.

Water absorbs light readily, to the point where the upper end of the color spectrum is increasingly filtered out the deeper you go.  This results in reds quickly disappearing & a greenish/bluish cast to all pics.  Another side effect is that the filtering greatly reduces the ambient light needed for faster shutter speeds, which makes shooting moving objects a chore.  In a nutshell, post-processing adds some of the red spectrum back into the picture.

In Photoshop, you can go to Image-->Adjustments.
There are a few choices there, the primary being levels and curves.

My normal workflow is to take an underwater picture that's reasonably in focus & just do "Image-->Adjustments-->AutoLevels"  That's what I did on yours - not the optimal color correction, but usually gets it really close.  There are several other minor actions you can apply, but levels will give you the most immediate results.  If you have more questions on this, feel free to PM me & I'll walk you through it.   :smt001

Here is an example of a before/after using the levels function.

It's really neat to watch them rooting around the rocks scaring up little morsels of food.  They also pose better for pictures because they're so absorbed in their work.   :smt003

There are several types of goatfish in Hawaii, some of which are among the most revered food fish despite their relatively small size.

Here are a couple pics that show the barbells under their chin.

Good job on getting the barbells.  I have so much to learn..... :smt004

I tried the corrections in the software that came with the camera.  It WORKS!  Thank you for the explanation of the portion of the spectrum that I need to attend to.

Here is one just to prove that I got the colors better.  Now to work on my shots.

Cool shots Pat!  I feel sorry for those fish once you start carrying a gun.  :smt003 .  I just got my new Pentax W30 and can not wait to try it on the water.  I will be trying for salmon again this Saturday and will head to Stillwater for the RF opener on Tuesday.  That should give the camera a good test.  Watch out for OTW photos in my reports!!!!!
