Title: [Video Available] Adventure to Catalina
Post by: Chet on October 04, 2016, 05:25:50 PM
Rudy and I have been planning to cross the channel from San Pedro to Catalina Island for a year now. So we bought 2 AIs early this year. To make this 23-mile-one straight, in reality we need about 30 miles to cross. We know we need to stack some miles under our belt. So we trolled hard on every occasions for salmon as a result we caught some fresh wild king salmons.  :smt007
With that being said we are going to do it.

We are leaving tonight.
Leave San Pedro Oct 5, return Oct 8.

Will give live report if there is phone connection. If you don't see any update, it means we are busy catching lobsters and shooting Yellowtails.  :kick

Exciting trip!
I've seen some youtube videos of AI's sailing to Catalina and it looked soooo much fun.
Probably about 6 hours of sailing time that you'll enjoy very much.
You guys have fun and I do look forward to your live report. Or I can settle with some video captions of the trip once you're back.
Enjoy guys.

By the way, be sure to carry a spare Rudder Pin. You just don't know when that pin could break. It happened to me at Dux last year and Gabekap helped me replaced it. Good thing I had a spare which reminds me I should get me another one.
Just heads up.

One of my favorite things about camping on Catalina was the sound of the waves on the beach.  Some thing about all the shells and the steep shore made for some great sleep.

Got back from afternoon dive.
Saw so many calicos, took one for dinner. I am sure it's not worth posting a calico.
No yellowtail yet, will look again tomorrow.
There are some lobsters hiding in the hole. Hopefully they come out to play tonight.

Water temp is way too warm, I need to let water in every other dive.
No kelp stalk either. Viz is 30ft, top to bottom.
Never seen a kelp paddies even on our crossing the channel.

Quote
(3) A Declaration for Multi-Day Fishing Trip may not be filed for a trip unless the trip is continuous and extends for a period of 12 hours or more on the first and last days of the trip and no berthing or docking is permitted within five miles of the mainland shore.

Seems like it.  That's a pretty damn good idea.  Looks like the permits are cheap too.

haha i know huh

that would be awesome, triple play!! I believe Lost_Anchovy has accomplished that in one day...or maybe it was salmon + hali, wsb + hali, or whatever it was lol

Combining photos, videos, and music to make it looks/sound good is a real work.

Question:
What would you guys prefer?
1.  3 minutes clip
2.  6-8 minutes clip
3.  10-15 minutes clip

Haha. Well played.

I would aim for 5-6 minutes max....I know its hard...but it will be easier for most folks to watch that length....I heard 3 and under is ideal but that is really hard to do for a lot of adventures....

Looking forward to checking it out!!

Not too short, not too long.  Medium is preferred and you can break it down in series.  I would say 6-8 minutes per.

Short is good to view in mobile devices, but it is just that, too short.

You can't really do a view-n-go if it's too long.

Whichever way you decide, I am looking forward to those videos!

After reading about the broken rudder pins, my boyfriend got a spare pin for his Revolution. He opened up his hatch to find a good place to store it, and discovered the kayak had come with a spare pin in a little storage area on the underside of the hatch cover! Happy to have 2 spares, just amused that it had one and we had never noticed!

Very cool!  I was holding my breath watching the night landing.  Did you guys have a backup plan in case you don't make land on time?  Also, the 360 of Parsons Landing was super cool, especially the two AIs on the beach.

Too fucking awesome! Two thumbs up and super like!

It's time consuming to document the whole trip,it's all worth the effort I guess since most people like it. :smt006

As far as safety goes, I didn't feel I am in any danger even though it's getting a bit late. The only concern is mechanical problem of the mirage drive, hence I bought an extra mirage drive.
Hint....leave at 6am if anyone plan to do this type of trip.

Awesome video!  Thanks for putting it together.

So now that you've had time to soak it all in and reflect on it... other than starting out at 6am, what would you do differently next time?

- Stay 2 days longer. It was so short when you do what you love in a remote place like this.
Nothing else I would want to change.

Is it just me or the way back seemed much shorter (time wise) than the departure leg?

Is it just me or the way back seemed much shorter (time wise) than the departure leg?

- It took 9.5 hours to get there, because we had wind directly blew from our destination.
- 8 hours to get back home. Average 3.2mph, pedal Alllllllllllllllll the way.

Thanks for sharing your adventure and doing the video.  I felt like I was there.  Did you ever find out why your AI got filled up with so much water?  Amazing that it did not sink with all that water.

I started with four 2.5gallon jugs water plus all Spearfishing and camping gears, the kayak sit way below normal level.
Wind blew hard and wave kept crashing over the bow, plus it submarines a few times. It's normal to have some water I think.

There are several places it can leak. Front hatch is easy fix with pipe insulation. Round ones a bit more involving

Very kool guys!! Looks like you were floating on your akas that one point. Was it difficult to over come the flooding water with the pump?  Seems like it would flood in faster than you can pump it out. Looked like your center hatch was under water. I took on about 6"es of water once this summer fishing off Bolinas on a rough windy day. Good thing you finally got a little wind, all tho if it stared blowing real hard, it could become a problem if your flooded... Quite the adventure for sure! One of the best posts I've seen on this board.  :smt004

Great to hear positive review of the video.
I use NRS bilge pump, it worked really well. It did slow down just a bit when there was flooding.
Hobie AI is really a keeper kayak.
