you'll need dollars to catch strippers.

start with an inexpensive reel also from cabelas.  I use 50-80 dollar reels, but only because I like engineering.  read the reviews on the mid-low range reels and choose one you like the looks of.  Stripers will use the reel to some degree, but without a wad of cash, the salt will eat them fast so its better to replace every few years than spend 400 bucks.

TFO BVK 9' 7 weight. Allbright Tempest II reel with an intermediate running line. Then about 27' of T14 shooting head.

TFO has a $25 life time no questions asked warranty. That alone makes it the best rod in my opinion.

This is a the best outfit for the price.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

I have the same rod and reel I've had for 30 years. Still catches fish and I've caught just about everything on it.
Neither were very expensive. Pflueger (1494 1/2 I think) and a 6 wt rod...can't recall the brand right now.
No ling on it...yet, but plenty of blacks, blues and olives, plus trout, steelies, salmon, bass, etc.
Get an idea of what you want and hit CL and the like.
Learning the basics of casting, mending, double hauling will do you beter than any expensive rod reel combo you can buy.
I just got rid of a ton of fly fishing books...if I had only known, Darn.
The one book I kept, and IMO is the best book on fly fishing ever written, is "The Curtis Creek Manifesto".
Get it! Straight to the point, funny, super informative, and straight to the point. Did I mention he gets straight to the point?
THIS IS A KILLER DEAL!

( I just bought one. Too good to pass up)

I haven't been fly fishing long but did find a good source on Wetfly brand gear on Left Lane Sports.  They aren't a top name brand but I've had good success casting them.  I say casting vice fishing because I had a guy tell me to not worry about catching for your first few thousand casts, just focus on getting a proper cast where you want it consistently.

I'm with Rockfish, Cabelas label is a good place to start. Good rods, not too expensive. I have several. I can for sure feel the difference between the Sages and Loomis rods I bought when I had a bunch more expendable $ than I do now, but can't say I can feel 3-400 $ worth of difference. Stripers ... same as others advice, 7-8 wt or even 9 if in the surf w/ big flys, relatively inexpensive reel especially on the beaches. T -14 for streamers and an intermediate for poppers. Depends more on the size fly and line density you're throwing than fish size.
The fly fishing addiction can be as bad as the kayak madness
Have fun

If the TFO BVK is too much, they also make the Pro series which runs about $149 and also comes with the $25 no questions asked warranty.  I have used and still use that series a lot.  I prefer the BVK now mainly because it is a green blank and feels a little lighter in my hands.

If you want to try any of them out just let me know.  I just got my 7 weight replaced after breaking it a couple weeks ago on the delta.
