Sept 27-30
This is not a tourney or MBF just a FnC
This will be a great weekend for getting up to Hell Hole to Target Bows, Browns, Kokes, & Macks. If you have Crawdad traps bring them so we can do a couple boils. I want this to be a family event so feel free to bring the family along. If people don’t want to fish there is some amazing hiking and mountain biking up in this area and it you’re feeling really adventurous you can hike aroundthe entire reservoir (yeah I won’t be doing this)
We will be heading up Thursday eve and will be setting up camp in the upper parking lot. It’s free camping but no fires 🔥. There will be plenty of space for quite a few people to show. We can do potlucks on Fri & Sat night and a group breakfast Sunday morning. I will be cooking up fresh trout for all to enjoy
If you haven’t been up to Hell Hole before it’s worth the drive.
The only rules are DBAD, no drama, dink and have fun or don’t but either way DBAD. Bring something to the potluck. Be chilly, have a good time, and DBAD.
If you have questions post it up.

Laura and I are hoping to make this. 16 months (for the most part) working 7 days a week on the house has wore me out!
-
I doubt I can make it that time of year, but it's a great idea, and a great location. Go if you can (and don't be a dick)!
-
Reminder: the road to hell is paved with good intentions :smt044
This sounds awesome.
-
Beautiful place!

Was there an issue with someone being a dick before? Lol

Was there an issue with someone being a dick before? Lol
There’s always issues with people being dicks. :smt044
Just want a chill weekend with friends and families :beer3 I also like saying don’t be a dick :smt075

Pencil me in for now. 8)

Not if you're taking 11 pines rd. It's still closed.
You'll have to go through Forest Hill.

Sounds like fun. :smt006
-
Nothing brings out my inner dick quicker than someone repeatedly telling me not to be a dick., I think you actually want us to be dicks. Deny as you will, but truth be told, you actually want to find yourself camping at hell hole with a bunch of dicks. See you there........not. :smt044
-
:smt006
Where there's alcohol involved the probability of there being "Dicks" present is greatly enhanced . :smt012 :smt044
-
I knew I’d get the responses I’m getting and it’s all good. #dontbeadick
I would also like to have a corn hole tourney Saturday afternoon. I have a set but we would need a few more. If you have a corn hole set and been bags please bring them.
I am thinking about doing t-shirts for this. If I get enough interest I will put something together.
-
On the calender hope to make it. Won't be a dick... Might be an ass though :smt044

I’m working on having a lechon cooked for Saturday of the event. More info to come on this.
Gonna be a damn good time.

Oh, now everyone is going to want to come :smt011 :smt005 :smt005 :smt005

I want to share with all of you that are invited, interested, or going that the Fishing is a small part of the experience. The food and time spent chilling with friends is what will make this an amazing weekend.
This time of year the crawdad’s will be filling up traps and make for an amazing lunch. Boiling them with corn on the cob in some amazing spices will blow your mind.
When you clean your Bows and Browns finding the meat inside is as pink as a fresh ocean salmon will make your mouth water. But I’m will only get better with some special ingredients that will make them tastier than most 5 star restaurants.
You will never truly understand unless you take the drive to HELL hole.
I will be posting up gear recommendations as we get closer
-
So to give back to the community we will be doing raffle Saturday afternoon to raise money for PIF.
I am working on donations but if anyone has anything they would like to donate please let me know. I have a few rods I will be donating myself.
Let’s do this

I'll bring my traps... Looks like we can make it! Road condition? Think our little trailer could make it out there? (Tribeca or jeep) Ramp to launch kayaks? Never been there. Got close but haven't fished it...

From what I’ve heard road is in passable with some rough sections but not too bad. I would say keep to play it safe.
Boat launch is a bit of a hike. I will be towing the yaks down behind the truck then moving truck back up to camp. Might do multiple runs to help get people back up hill

Sounds like an awesome venue too bad its six hours away. :smt009

You and your trailer could definitely make it. I was up there Saturday and the road was paved and fine (a few potholes) all the way down to the water. Take Foresthill Rd. in Auburn, turn right on Mosquito Ridge Rd. and head up through the mountains. It will first take you to French Meadows reservoir. Keep going across the dam, turn right at the end and you're almost there. The mt road winds back and forth a lot but I'm sure you could get you trailer out there. I saw much bigger trailers and RVs at Big Meadow campground. The campground was about a lil less than half full so everyone get up there early to grab a spot before they run out.

Road woes are premature...we’re talking about late Sept right?
Sounds fun, never been there but want to go. I’ll put it on the calendar. And topic is stickied...so you better not cancel it :-)

After the dam at French Meadows there is a sign pointing towards Hell Hole. The last time I was up there Google Maps said to turn left instead of right. A right turn follows the paved road, a left turn will lead you in by way of the Jeep road.

Easy drive from here might do a Sat. up there not sure about over night. I like my bugs boiled with a cheap bottle of chardonnay and old bay seasoning :smt007

Who likes beer?!?
I dooooo!

I hope to be there. Depends on when my grandson decides to born.
I’m not much of a beer drinker, so I’ll bring a few bottles of wine, and or gin.
I’ll try not to be much of a dick.

So now that Albion is in the books I’ve been reaching out to see about donations for the GO TO HELL Hole raffle. Looks like we should have some descent prizes. I will update soon with prizes and sponsors.
If you have a sponsor who you think might be able to support the event please let me know. If anyone has any gear they would like to personally donate to the event that would be awesome as well. The money raised will go towards PIF and Shicken.
Thanks
-
I want to give a big thank you to Charlie (Tshuas Tooj Vaj) and the Fresh N Salty crew for stepping up and getting his sponsors to dontate to this event. On top of these donations and a couple more we are waiting to hear back on they are pulling together an anonymous cash donation as well. It takes a village sometimes. Can’t thank the FNS crew enough.
QI Fishing has donated a new rod to the event to be raffled off.

Go check out their line up of great fishing rods https://www.qifishing.com
The FNS crew has also donated a new Neil Pryde splash jacket to the raffle.

Hey Everyone,
So there’s been questions about camping for this FNC. I’ll do my best to answer them here
My original plan was to have everyone in the upper parking lot above the ramp. This is free and is close to the launch. (But not super close) The other option is Big Meadows Campground about 2 Miles up the hill.
The parking lot has a pit toile but that’s about it. Fires are not allowed in the parking lot. One side of the lot is fairly flat the other side closer to the lake is a bit more sloped. Depending on the number of people showing up this might get tight. But I think it is doable if we are smart about setting up.
Big Meadows Campground has set sites and they are half off due to the fire a few years back taking out the water. But there is a pit toilet there and fires will depend on the USFS. I have also been told there are a lot of mosquitoes up at the campground where I’ve never had a mosquito issue in the parking lot.
I am planning on setting up in the parking lot and doing the potluck, corn hole, & raffle there as well. If people want to camp up at Big Meadow I don’t see any issue with that at all. No matter what it will all work out.
-
I swear have the best friends. Tony Moore just messaged me and and he is donating two $50 Bass Pro Shop gift cards.
Not sure about you but I know I can put these to use.
-
This event sounds great... thanks for organizing!
I never took my kayak up that far... will be busy youth soccer season time already but this sounds too much fun and getting to know other kayak anglers to pass up. May need some tips on how to hook up on these trouts. Still consider myself novice with one year fishing.
I hope I can make it and let you know as we get closer.
Is it possible to set up small tent next to the parking lot you plan to set up for?
-

There is definitely room for a small tent and I will be posting up info about a seminar at Hell Hole Friday night.
-
Okay it’s happening. Just got word from Tony that the pig has been ordered and will be 100-120# dressed. So we will need to make sure we have plenty of people to help devour this lechon.
May also need some help getting caja up there and if anyone has done this before to help out as well.
Just over a month out and it’s gonna be on.
-
Ill be there but I dont want to mooch and im not much of a cook, any requests to bring something?

garbage bags ..we always need garbage bags and anything that goes with Pork apparently LOL
This is true garbage bags are always needed. Packaged salad, chips and salsa, drinks, or anything easy. Not to stressed if someone’s not a good cook just do what you can.

Sounds like an awesome venue too bad its six hours away. :smt009
Pussy :smt044, Hey Primo how long do you think it takes to get to the coast
-
I might come just to hang out , but no more kayak fishing for awhile for me. Maybe some body can cast for me and I can fish from shore :smt007
-
I think I can have a couple things built by then and will hopefully be able to make it there
-

What happened that’s keeping you off the yak?

I am gonna be in on this one. 2018 has not been kind to me for camping, and I aim to change that before winter.
Thanks for putting this on!
-
I'm in- Can't wait for it.

in there like swimwear!

Damn! Judas Priest or Hell hole? I got 4 free Priest tickets for the 29th

Be careful, there may be a few dicks that like an ass! Just sayin'!!
-
Hey everyone,
Wanted to post up a little about the event. After some really long decision making I have decided not to bring on the beer sponsors. The reason I’m made this decision is I want this to be a family event and not so much of an alcohol focused party. Feel free to bring and drink what you like as will I but I will not be supplying any alcohol.
I also want to put it out there that while this is on a FB event page I am not in any way a director of this FnC or a coordinator. Think of it like a family reunion and you are invited. I am going camping, fishing, chilling, & I’m inviting you as friends to come up and do the same. If you come up and participate in any way you are doing this on your own. If you go out and fish you are doing this on your own. I hope you understand what I am saying here but if not I will spell it out. I am not liable to anyone who decides to come up and join me and my family for this FnC trip to Hell Hole.
-
Wish I could make it but that is the weekend my son graduates from basic in San Antonio. Totally get that this is not sponsored and is a group of friends camping and fishing Only a Richard would think otherwise. And you have made it clear they are not welcome (DBAD)
-
So Friday eve we will be having a couple guys doing an informal seminar on Kokanee Fishing. They will go over trolling with a downrigger and jigging for trout. Like I said this will be an informal sit down chill time and hopefully you will be able to up
Your trout game Saturday morning.
No I’m not doing seminar :smt044
-
Man I wish I could make this, have a good time and find them mogan browns
-
I might come just to hang out , but no more kayak fishing for awhile for me. Maybe some body can cast for me and I can fish from shore :smt007
What happened that’s keeping you off the yak?
My not so bright employees set up an antique aluminum ladder next to me i reached up to touch up a window step over on to it (me not so bright) and it curled up. Placing me solidly in the rocks = four tears to the right shoulder and a disk bulge in last vertebrate. After sitting in yak at Albion I found myself with all new humbling experiences including trying to ooze out of bed and crawl screaming on all fours just to get to the bath room. I suck at being careful :smt011

Dam that sounds painful. Wishing you a speedy recovery and chilling at Hell Hole
Is better than chilling at home. See you there

Some valuable intel here
I’m sure everyone has there go to baits they already have in their tackle boxes. Here are a few I’ve used at Hell Hole and have had good success with.
Rapala JSR4 or 5 in shad pattern - I usually do a long setback and troll this in 20’ or less of water (along shoreline) at about 2mph.
Rebel silver/black jerkbait in small & large - again a long setback and less than 20’ of water. I will peddle at 2mph ripping this then letting it pause. A lot of your bites will come on the pause so be ready and make sure your drag is not too tight.
Keit Fish K4 in bronze or rainbow - this lure can be a bit of a pain if not tuned correctly. I run it in less than 20’ of water at 1.5-2 mph. This bait if running true will slay the bows and you might even get a Koke.
The Koke will be schooling up at this time so you might find the a little more shallow than normal.
-
So if you are going to be trolling for Kokes using a down rigger and need a good rod and don’t want to break the bank here’s a good one.
I have a couple of these and love them.
-
Looks like my girl and I are going to be able to make it up there for the weekend. A coworker may stop by for some early morning fishing too.
Need any help with the lechon?

Thanks Tote.
Rider just let me know how i can help and if you need anything for it, I’ve got access to a restaurant to order thru. Haven’t done a pig this style yet, did a spit roasted suckling pig a couple years ago and it was a blast.

-
Last week the road to hell hole off wintworthsprings was closed did it re open
I found this on the National Forest page.
Ellis road is temporarily CLOSED for road repairs for 2 to 6 weeks (from mid-July to end of August). It will re-open when the construction is completed.
Current Conditions: Eleven Pines Road repairs in progress. Expected opening if all goes well is late summer 2018. Due to storm damage to the access roads, the only available detour is the Mosquito Ridge Road through Foresthill.
-
Mosquito ridge is the way I go, nothing wrong with that route. I take that road coming from Napa
-
If you are mapping out the route to get to HELL Hole you will need to make sure you go through Foresthill then take Mosquito Ridge Rd and stay on it until you go over the French Meadows dam. (Stay on Mosquito Ridge Rd)
After going over French Meadows dam you will take a right onto French Meadows Rd (your mapping program may tell you to take a left. DON’T DO IT!!!) follow French Meadows Rd about 7 Miles then take a right onto Hell Hole Rd and it’s roughly 8 Miles to the parking lot. (There’s a sign at the turn)
I we will be getting there Thursday afternoon to set up, chill, and get ready to fish Friday morning.
Hope to see all of you there.
-
Thanks Tote.

I have never done one a lechon before so I am not yet sure what I will need. I will do some research and get back to you on this.
-
Yes, that’s one of google maps weak spots. It doesn’t know the difference between a paved road and a Jeep trail. It will send you on a mud rutted boulder filled trail because it saves a 1/4 mile over a paved road.
I noticed that google maps showed that the ramp at Hell Hole was closed permanently. I called the ranger to make sure and he said it was open. He also said the road repairs might be done in a week or two. If you like using the other road, call or check the website and it might be open by then.

Stay tuned I know I have some more prizes inbound.

I have it in my firm plans now to join y'all from 28th to 30th... really looking forward to my first trip with the NCKA community.
While still fairly new to fishing doing this now 18 months I feel after fishing Folsom Lake, Rollins Lake, Scott's Flat Lake and Sac Port & 2 Delta spots (Actually even caught a few decent sized stripers) I am ready to tackle a new fish species, have fun, meet up and not be one of the D's. Even my wife got convinced that I need a truck instead of roof topping and scratching up my small SUV.
Maybe other have the same question:
- what is the tackle I should bring to catch Bows, Browns, Kokes, & Macks?

Thanks.... just saw that as well as I was reading up on details.
Looking at the raffles I will make sure to bring some cash as well.
-
All I can say is WOW!!!
Got the money the Fresh N Salty crew pulled together for our Pay It Forward fundraiser. In total I was given $655 that will be added to the money raised by the raffle. Once we get back I will get all the money raised to Marvin Lau.
The support from my brothers and sisters in the kayak angling community never cease to amaze me. Thank you FNS crew you will always have a place at my table.

My awesome brother who is an amazing photographer, asked if he could donate a print to the raffle. It will be a framed 16”x20” print numbered 1/1 signed my my brother Thor Crain.
Similar prints of his have gone for upwards of $600.
Thank you Thor and I wish you were going to be able to make it to the event.
-
I reached out to Gvf Lures hoping they would come to the FnC and to see if they would be willing to donate to the raffle. Well they are coming and donated 5 dodger/soon big combinations to the raffle.
I’ve use the GVF lures before at Hell Hole and have had some good days. If you don’t have the gear you need to target Kokes or even bow or browns hit up their website and order some gear before the event.
Thanks for the donation GVF and see you there.

I may do just that. Quick question: is the parking lot area where most people are congregating wooded enough for hammock/bear pinata camping?

Depends on what part of parking lot you are in. The area to the south not a lot of trees. But up near entrance there are more trees.

FYI, there is ALOT of bears in that area :smt003
-
Not to mention a lot of man/bears roaming around in the dark :smt044 With :beer3 that might make a hammock interesting :smt005

Speaking of bears, it is deer and bear season at that time. Anyone bringing a rifle?

Not sure if anyone will be hunting up there that weekend. But there is a State Game Refuge to the north of Hell Hole and you will have to pass through it to get there.
Just a heads up.
Also thought I heard all D zone tags are gone.
-
Area with green mark
Thanks!
-
With all the great food I have seen I bet bears will check out our area....no bear lockers I assume as this is not an official campsite? anyone worried about the coolers etc? Cant really lift those up the trees scout style... and not recommended inside trucks.
Hunting season might keep them a bit at bay.... but do they know its hunting season ? ;-)
-
I haven’t had trouble there before but there’s always a first. Gonna strap my cooler top down and hope for the best.
-
I will show up Friday, looking forward to it! Will have a few growlers of good German Oktoberfest Bier to share.
-

Speaking of bears, it is deer and bear season at that time. Anyone bringing a rifle?
Not sure if anyone will be hunting up there that weekend. But there is a State Game Refuge to the north of Hell Hole and you will have to pass through it to get there.
Just a heads up.
Also thought I heard all D zone tags are gone.
Already got my tags so that’s no biggie. Always wanted to kayak to the campgrounds on the far side of the lake and hunt the wilderness that’s on the southeast side of the lake.

Ha, ha.. sometime I gotta tell ya about the time I left an orange under the seat in the car and was woke up at 3am by a ranger at curry campgrounds in Yosemite :smt044

I will have my shotgun with me for the early Honker season that opens Sat morning just in case there are some geese there.
It is legal to travel through the refuge with a firearm as long as 1) if it is a pistol it needs to be unloaded and locked in a case or trunk of car 2) if it is a long gun it needs to be unloaded and in a case. The ammo can be in the same case or trunk locked up, it just can't be in the magazine attached to the firearm. You cannot have a firearm in the refuge if you are staying there. Driving through is ok.

I’m pretty sure that your guns need to be disassembled going thru the refuge, no matter if it is a long gun or pistol. Also doesn’t matter if you’re staying in the refuge or not, just driving thru with an assembled gun could land you in trouble.
-
Good luck seeing anyone up there that would check.

Man I wish I could. Have other commitments that take precedent.
Love that area.

SB 175, as introduced, Fuller. State game refuges: possession of weapons.
Existing law generally prohibits the use or possession is in a game refuge of a firearm, BB device, crossbow, or bow and arrow capable of being used to take birds or mammals. However, existing law permits the possession of a firearm, BB device, crossbow and bolts, or bow and arrow by a person when traveling through any state game refuge when the firearms are taken apart or encased and unloaded and the bows are unstrung or stored separately from any arrow or bolt. Existing law requires that when the traveling is done on a route other than a public highway or other public thoroughfare or right of way, specified notice be given to the Department of Fish and Wildlife at least 24 hours before that traveling.
This bill would exempt certain peace officers, whether active or honorably retired, and any person licensed to carry a concealed firearm from the above travel and notice requirements as they relate to a firearm.

BILL TEXT
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. Section 10506 of the Fish and Game Code is amended to read:
10506.Nothing in this code prohibits
10506. (a) Notwithstanding Section 10500, the possession of firearms, BB devices as defined in Section 16250 of the Penal Code, crossbows and bolts, or bows and arrows is permitted by persons when traveling through any game refuges when the firearms are taken apart or encased and unloaded and the bows are unstrung or stored separately from any arrow or bolt. When the traveling is done on a route other than a public highway or other public thoroughfare or right of way, notice shall be given to the department at least 24 hours before that traveling. The notice shall give the name and address of the person intending to travel through the refuge, the name of the refuge, the approximate route, and the approximate time when that person intends to travel through the refuge.
(b) The travel and notice of requirements in subdivision (a) as they relate to a firearm do not apply to a peace officer listed in Section 830.1 or 830.2, or subdivision (a) of Section 830.33, of the Penal Code, whether active or honorably retired, or to a person licensed to carry a concealed firearm pursuant to subdivision (a) of Section 26150 of the Penal Code.
(c) Notwithstanding subdivision (b), a concealed firearm shall not be used to take game in a game refuge.

The only reason I said that a pistol must be in a locked case is that is law for traveling with a pistol in CA. Long guns have no such requirement. Trigger locks door not count as locked. It must be in a locked case in CA.

Google Maps shows the route in by way of the Ramsey Crossing instead of by French Meadows Reservoir. I wonder if that means the road repair work is done. If you can get in that way the gun restriction is avoided.
-
Follow the directions in from Foresthill it is for sure passable. Unless you wanna risk going through Georgetown. The choice is yours. But if the road is closed coming through Georgetown the day will get a lot longer.

So my amazing friends Jim (Rockfish) & Amy (Happy Hooker) decided they wanted to donate to the raffle. He come back with the Engle dry box/cooler with rod holders. I’m so stoked and thankful. He asks me what’s the raffle is going for again and I tell him it’s for Shicken. We go out to the garage where he proceeds to hand me a brand new Hobie Livewell. I’m blown away by the kindness and support I get from my friends.
Thank you so much Jim & Amy.
Don’t forget you dollah dollah bills y’all or better yet yo twenty spots and Hundo’s. All joking aside do what you can we have some great prizes to raffle off and trust me the cause I worth donating.

I wouldn't try the other road without first speaking to the rangers to be sure.

Just spoke to ranger station and they said that they are supposed to start paving this week. She followed that statement up with “they have been saying that for almost a year now”
See you there.

Hey Everyone,
There are some rules I need to put out before this weekend.
1. No charcoal BBQ’ or open fires at the upper parking lot. If you are at the campground you can but will need to have a CA fire permit. Link below- we will take the pig and Caja up to the campground to cook it then bring back to the parking lot.
2. We can use propane BBQ grills and stoves at the upper parking lot. But you will need to have a CA fire permit to do this. Link below

That’s a great link. That’s a lot easier than going thru the forest service.

See you guys there, im heading out at 5, should be fishing by 9. Channel 69
-
This eve didn’t go as planned so I’m hoping to be there by noon.
I’ll be setting up camp then trying to get on the water for a bit to drop dad pots and catch a couple fish for dinner.
Drive safe everyone and please follow my directions so you don’t get lost. Trust me almost every time I have people come up they get lost for a bit.
-
I will be leaving home around noon. I haven't even got any kayak gear together yet. Food still needs to be loaded, clothes packed, and who knows what else I need to do. Oh yea, get gas in the motorhome. $3.15 x 60 = oh shit!!

Gonna hit the road in a couple hours, probably be there around 3 or 4, looking forward to this!
Thanks for calling this meeting, Rider!

Seriously Ken. :smt011
Follow the directions I posted and there won’t be a problem.
I’ve had friends follow googl maps and it turned them off mosquito ridge road before they should’ve turned.

I've been out there with no map at all and gotten on the wrong road going home. I was lucky to finally get enough cell signal to allow my phone to work. When you're lost, a map is a good thing. The point of offline maps is to have something in case you need it. If you're lost, better a crappy map than nothing at all.
-
Load the Gaia app and download the map for the area; designed to work offline; has all the trails mapped out..... use it all the time when back country....
-
On google map, use hell hole campground as your destination and continue driving until you reach the parking lot. I noticed this google map but make sure to double check.

Google map directions are not reliable in the back country. It doesn’t know the difference between a paved road and a Jeep trail. It would bring you over the French Meadows dam and then have you turn left and take a slow Jeep trail when the road sign says turn right and you stay on paved road all the way to Hell Hole. But it’s still better than nothing if you’re lost in the forest.
-
Good luck to all of you who are going. I really wanted to make this one but Simply Fishing was last weekend and work needs me on the weekends.
I hope there are many Trout and Kokes for all.
Looks like some really killer beers too :smt007
-
Me too. The fuel pump went out in my truck. I’m glad it didn’t happen up there.

Maybe I'll get in a little fishing yet. :smt007

Well the event was pretty cool. Fish were caught, new friends were made, and like all other events A LOT of food was prepared and consumed.
I’ll let others chime in on their experience but for such a remote location it was pretty awesome.
We ended up with about 40+/- people and raised a total of $1902 for Shicken.
Still trying to decide if I’m going to do Hell Hole next year or maybe pick another High Sierra lake to descend upon.
Thank you to everyone who showed up and participated I love our kayak angling acommunity. Also a huge shout out to everyone who donated for the raffle making it what I feel was a huge success.
Until next time,
Rider

I went to hell and had fun... Broke down, friends helped, ate and played with everyone, got cool stuff in raffle, never touched the water... Ready to roll wherever next year! Thanks James and Shawna for a great time!!! :smt006
-
Glad to hear as much $ was raised by as modestly sized a group as us!
Had a blast on this trip, thanks so much for putting it together!
Met some awesome new folks, reconnected with ones I'd previously met, got to paddle a new lake with a new set of idiosyncrasies, got skunked on everything but the raffle.
Would definitely do this again if it comes to pass!
-
I had a great time!!!
Many firsts for me having never met any of you before but felt as if I had been with the group for a long time. Thanks again James for organizing and while planning the whole event also raising good money for a great cause! Food was delicious and company was great!
Hell hole seemed to not just me as rookie a hard time fishing. But at least I did catch my first Kokanee.
Looking forward to more events and hope to see many of you on the waters.
