Hey FriedKalamari, what kind of bucktail were you using instead of the sinker? can you point me to a picture?
I have noticed that smelt or anchovies seem to be scared of the sinker!!!!
thanks,
Newcal

Hey just like this.  Try it out.  I've yet to test it for anchovies.

I rub a tiny bit of gel scent like procure/smelly jelly onto the sabiki. Good thing is that you can leave it on there for many trips and the 'chovies don't seem to mind.
Very cool tip, I will have to try this.

Be careful jigging up anchovies after you have a salmon or two on board. As silly as is sounds, you could get cited for using restricted gear.

Nothing silly about it since I have caught several salmon on sabiki and sand dab rigs.

Thanks for the great advice on dead stick fishing for anchovies (I'm always jigging) and using a full sabiki.  What I do is use a 4oz P-Line Lazer Minnow as a weight.

If you have a hook on that Lazer Minnow plus more than one sabiki hook and you’re targeting rockfish/kings/cabbies (or have any on board) you’re violating the regs.

Also, no more than 3 hooks inside SF Bay.

I've found them pretty easy to catch in TB also but it's not uncommon to be over a cloud so large the disruption of the water rattles your line and still not get any interest. I usually assume something is chasing them when they seem to buzz by and ignore me - but who knows. I like to tip #6 or #8s with squid tentacle ends but small strips of tube work well and I do think adding bait or scent a game changer. I also prefer a 2 -4 oz P-Line Laser Minnow in Silver/Black, Chovie Supreme, or Green Mack instead of a cannonball or trolling style sinker. I am usually hoping to pick up something slightly bigger on the troll, but if I see a big cloud, I will almost always jig through it. I'll try deadsticking more.

Forgive the semi-related thread jack, but when I'm in TB, I am hoping for jack smelt or mackerel for bait - the anchovies (especially around this time of year) seem so small and fragile I usually just shake them off and keep searching. Am I missing opportunities? What size anchovy do you guys consider viable and productive?

Good point about the regs and sabiki's with Laser Minnows.  I should mention I spent most of my time search for bait, add to my homemade live well and then fish for rockfish and lings.

I don’t have the patience for that. For me it’s straight to the swimbaits, jigs, and teasers. :$
