I think that was Andy/Fishmaster1 who did the jig tutorial.  But I'm anxious to see any homemade jigs regardless...

I agree they do look really cool. But you need to be in the rocks to get big lings. So I tend to use cheaper rigs. I am dying to try some nasty rock piles with my home made knife jigs. The total cost is about $ .25 each. So who cares if I loose some.

Nice gig!  And will do, Mike...  I need a new tent, in fact, so I should be seeing you soon.

I tried some last year and got some good fish with them but the challenge is getting deep enough for lings.  Got some really fat blues, though, casting against rock ledges and letting them drop down.

What's the word for "unnecessary and overly-complicated invention that fills a previously underexploited niche market"?
In this case, it's called the looseanus jig hahaha.

I mean, come on, you can catch rockfish with a friggin piece of paper. They are not picky.
There's a reason why nobody has invented a better hammer in the last 100 years; because it works fine as-is. If it ain't broke....don't waste 20 bucks on a fancier, shinier version.

Ken used one in big sur, he got a lot of bites, but a lot of fish came unbuttoned. we looked at it and decided the stock hooks were way too small.

for whatever reason, that particular big sur spot is not snaggy in the slightest. not like, say, bean hollow..  :smt011 I remember when greg pulled up two diamond jigs off the bottom.. with a diamond jig,  :smt005

My in-laws came in from Japan the other day and brought me this thing.

Looks like a Lucanus competitor from Megabass. The hooks are ultra tiny so need replacement. Don't know WTF it's supposed to be and sure it's not magic but will have fun banging it on the ocean floor for a bit. On the more conventional side I did get a few Daiwa Saltiga jigs as well. Anyone have experience w/ them?

I'm sure those daiwa jigs would kick ass. overkill for rockfish, but if you dont lose it, then it's not,  :smt001.

at the end of last season I had a williams abyss potbellied jig that I got for cheap due to a messed up assist hook.

I never figured that thing would work at all, but it worked great! one end is so skinny if you pick the jig up by that end it bends.

check those williams benthos and abyss jigs out. looks like they have a new one too, the vortex..

I also have some cheapo ebay knockoffs of megabaits and knife jigs too and those look like they will work fine.

I was checking them out at Outdoor Pro shop in Oakland today, boy those hooks they have are sticky sharp! They are like size 8 or 10, heavy wire, on spectra braid swinging loose in the wind, and both of the jabbed my hand twice!. I was tugging on the skirts and they seem pretty bulletproof, but they also seem designed to get stuck in the rocks. You couldn't build a better shape lure to get stuck than the Loseyouranus.

I used them on several outings last year, and yes they do catch fish, but I don't think they are worth the rediculously high price.  The hooks are too small which resulted in many bites without hook-ups.  I did lots of bottom bouncing with them and only lost a couple to the rocks.  My choice of iron for lings and big reds are the Turman Tackle Lead Fish in orange color for only $2.25 to $3.99 for jigs ranging in weight from 80 to 300 grams.  they come with treble hooks, but I change them out with single siwash hooks for the really nasty rock piles.
