Hey all,
Considering buying this gently used set up for $75. Penn Defiance 30 reel and 7' Med heavy Tidewater rod (TWBT2040c70). I'd like to use it for halibut and salmon. Feedback appreciated!

I haven't used either of those but looks like it would be good for halibut. Not so sure it would be ideal for salmon, however.

I think that would work OK for salmon and halibut, but I personally would prefer a medium over medium heavy rod if it's a typical 7 foot boat rod like that one appears to be.

My personal choice for salmon is a 9'6" Lamiglas Classic Glass rod paired with an Abu Garcia Record reel. That rod does well absorbing the spastic shakes and runs of a hot salmon.

It'll work , not everyone can afford high end setups .its not a perfect setup but that'll tackle most species . Tying leaders n rigs matters more.

When you look outside the window, and all you see is fishing. True Story.

That Classic Glass rod is actually pretty affordable compared to a lot of high end stuff out there. Less than $100 if I recall correctly. Don't get this one if you plan to use heavy 2-3+ pound lead sinkers - too flexible. Works great with a DD6 diver.

I also use a 7' Medium Ugly Stick Tiger rod. That thing will handle whatever you throw at it, including 2-3+ pound balls if you go that route. (I prefer not to drop lead on the ocean floor. It's not good for the environment, and it's expensive.)
