James - contact Edsel. I think he has an Ocean Kayak Scrambler for sale. You can send him a private mail through this site at edr1967 .

Also keep an eye on craigslist, they have had a number fly through lately. If you are unsure about a particular kayak just post here, we will be happy to help!

A Prowler is a much more modern and efficient yak, as well as several feet longer.  The XT is slow and noisy, but a great all around old classic.  It wouldn't be a bad first yak, but you would likely want to upgrade after a while.

a used scrambler (11'4")or scrambler XT(12' something) is typically $150 to $350.

A used prowler 15 @ city kayak in san francisco is about $600. They have
quite a few used boats for sale there.

see www.oceankayak.com for comparisons of ocean kayak models.

The little boats will let you catch rockfish and halibut, but you are
potentially sharkbait and they are slower so your range is limited.

I had a scrambler I bought used with a paddle, I caught fish off it,
decided I liked this kayak fishing thing, then I traded it in for a longer
used boat after one year. In fact edsel's scrambler used to be mine!
the little boat was plenty but I'm a 160lb surfer. It seemed like an
aircraft carrier to me at the time.

If you are going to be ocean fishing, get the big fast 15 to 17 foot boat
if you can afford it.

people will tell you to paddle all the kayaks before you buy, but whenever
I start something new I like to go used and just go through a bunch of
stuff till I really know what I want. Then I buy used again,  :smt005.

I can't help you on the Tarpons but I saw this on Craigslist

http://www.craigslist.org/pen/spo/126828306.html

Aquan in San Carlos had Prowler Angler Editions on sale, you might want to give them a call.

James,  I'm looking to sell my hobie mirage outback.  Its not even 1 year old and is in perfect shape.  If your not familiar with the hobies, they are better designed for lake fishing than any other kayak(IMHO).  It has the peddal drive which makes it great for trolling.  If your interested you can pm me here on this site.  In this pic its the green one.  John

Yes it will go in the ocean, I do surf launches and landings and have caught quite a few fish from my yak at some pretty nice and not so nice spots.

James... I own a Hobie Outback too.  It's definitely not a lake yak only.   I taken it out for a 11 mile salmon trip around Moss Landing (Monterey Bay) and landed lots of big ocean fish on it... including this 28 lb halibut.

And if you like fishing Del Valle, there's no better fishing platform.  It's more stealthy than any bass boat.  I don't plan on ever selingl mine unless I have a chance to upgrade to a newer Hobie.  It's just way too much fun.

Yeah, I would echo what chuck is saying, I love my hobie, but right now, I cant afford two yaks and I really want something different, so if anyone else is reading this and has  a tarpon 140 or 160 they want to sell or trade please contact me.   I would consider a couple other kayaks as long  as they are under 32 inches wide and at least 14 feet long.  Oh,, and Joel, quit looking at my legs :smt012 unless of course, you want to buy the hobie, :smt005   John
