I'm looking for a tandem kayak for myself and my wife to go fishing with.  We will mainly be paddling in lakes, possibly going to the ocean if my wife is up to it.  We probably don't want something that is too short.  I don't want to hit my wife in the head when I'm paddling hard.  Would welcome any recommendation on what I should look for.

Thanks.

I think the best 2 person fishing yak I have seen is actually the Cobra triple. Lots of room to spread out, great storage and pretty decent speed wise with 2 people paddling.

Bill,

The Cobra Triple looks real nice.  At 16'6" long, 36" wide and 80 lbs, it's a Cadillac of kayaks.  Anyone has a used one for sale?

A long time ago, I was warned against getting a tandem for me and wife.  I was told it just leads to lots of   :angry4: and  :pain10: and  :smt062

I've got a tanden and am quite happy with it.

Malibu Pro2.

The wife is happier using my P15, and I just paddle the tandem with our 4 yr old in front.

I second Chuck's statement.  In fact, I may have been the one to warn him.

I doubt that you can find a second hand Zest - (cause it's fairly new) But IMO: this tandem is FAST compared to any other tandems out in the market. I was fortunate enought to test paddle one at the REI paddle demo days last year.

When I used to work for REI, we called the tandem kayaks the "divorce maker" :smt002

Henry HoHo,

I'm a Triple owner.  Let me know if you have specific questions and I'll answer as best I can.

Allen,

The Triple seems like a really nice yak.  Is it good for solo?  Is it too long and heavy off the water for 1 person?

Here's one vote for the OK Malibu II XL.  Lots of deck space when going solo and just fine for two pretty big guys.

Like all kayak suggestions -- go paddle each and every one before you decide.

I do fine with it off the water.  a cart is helpful though...if you're by yourself... and on the water it works fine with one two or even three people.  it ain't fast but it holds everyone with room to fish.

When I'm alone I fish from the middle seat.  there's someone else here (I don't know the name) that fishes from the back when alone.

srm ... that's me that fishes off the back of the Triple when fishing solo.  I do so for a couple of reasons.  From the back I can much more easily turn the beast.  I also like having my gear in front of me.  The middle section is not so comfortable to me ... small footpegs and shorter.  It also doesn't have scuppers in it and collects water.  I do get a lot of wave slap when doing this as ahe nose is up a bit.

HoHo ... I handle the Triple just fine by myself both on and off the water, although I am a pretty big guy and can get away with just muscling it.

Allen was kind enough to let my dad and I use his triple last summer, I caught the salmon in my avatar using that boat. I am a pretty small guy and lugging hat thing around on land was a real pain, the cart helped for sure though. With 2 people it is no problem at all. I paddled my dad around for a while when he was not paddling, it worked great. I would be concerned solo in the wind though, that is a lot of boat to push through the wind.
