Title: My phone and its great adventure
Post by: Crayfish on March 31, 2018, 09:14:30 PM
My phone and car key is currently in Bodega Bay floating around in a dry bag.  Unfortunately I couldn't GPS track it until I got home (1.5 hours away) and was on a "trusted device".

Anyways, while loading crab traps it got knocked off, and by the time I noticed, there wasn't a chance of finding it.  The wind picked up from the NE about 12 mph and I didn't wanted to get back to shore with my haul.  Which was enough to cook and feed the family once they showed up and rescued me.

I'll keep doing checking on it until it runs out of battery.    I doubt it will be recovered, but stranger things have happened.

I hope you get your phone back. How long will the battery hold out?

I'm guessing it has another 12 hours in it.  But with GPS on, who knows.  I was able to lock it with a message remotely, "I'm lost at sea, contact my owner 210-xxx-xxxx."   It's like a futuristic message in a bottle.  The really unlikely thing would be it washes up on shore, a beachcomber finds it, and charges it and uncovers the message.

Two Dungie keepers.  Working three cages with chicken in each.  Got a cage that had 6 at one point, but none at size.  Plenty of big rock and red crab, which is fine.  I think they taste better even if you have to work more for the meat.

Sorry about the phone and keys.
That is an amusing post and chart though.
Too bad that battery wouldn't last longer.

Wow, sorry to hear about your loss. It might be worth calling the Coast Guard or Fish and Wildlife because I think the both launch out of Bodega Bay. If you can bring your trusted device to track your phone they might be willing to make a quick search for you.

The last time I went out was at a local lake. Everything loaded in and gave myself a hardy push off from the dock. Reached for my paddle and realized it was still behind the seat in my car.

I fear the paddle-less launch, I could imagine lying on the kayak and dog paddling back...

Or drifting to Hawaii...

There is a good chance it will be found.  Hopefully soon.  That is crazy that you can remotely lock a phone and put messages on it.

Post up a $100 reward on Craigslist and I’m sure someone will find it.

Battery ran out last night, so no more updates.  I ordered a new one in the meantime, if it washes ashore though I'll be sure to send updates.

I lost a kage off the cape and Matt Mayes found it.

Sounds like a gift.

No, unfortunately I didn't get more updates from it.  I'm not sure if 1) it ran out of battery, 2) was swept out of the range of the cell towers, 3) eaten by a shark that saw a blinking, buzzing phone in the middle of the night floating on the surface.

I hope it finds its way back to you. That would make a great ending to this story.

Should be near Tomales at least by now... If someone sees the bag, there is a good chance of them grabbing it.  Good luck!

The tracking map is kinda cool, following the wind and currents.

Minor update: looks like Sunday the wind started changing direction.  For some reason it was able to get GPS later and it says it last saw it 3 days ago North of Doran Park.  I'm not sure why the updates are sporadic, though it's certainly out of battery by now.

Big fan of this thread.  Feels like we're watching NASA trying to contact a lost satellite.  I hope you get your phone back, eventually, though.

I didn't lose my phone but had in just in a pocket...salt water plus iPhone not a good mix.  Now, I'm rolling with my old iPhone 5S and used to waiting a lot for it to work.

Lifeproof case plus ziploc bag then in my pocket. So far so good.

If you don't have a waterproof case, double ziploc bags would hopefully keep water out of the inner bag long enough for a self rescue if you went swimming.
