Title: Hello from a boatless lurker
Post by: Crayfish on December 06, 2017, 10:31:16 PM
Hey,
I'm Taylor and I moved my family to the Walnut Creek area from Albuquerque this year.   For work, I'm a computer scientist and work on supercomputers.  I enjoy surf fishing and fly fishing, but I rarely catch anything  :smt011.  I've been fishing at Limantour mostly, but so far have only gotten a few dungeoness with snares and a lot of seals just watching me from the water.  I'm hoping that getting a kayak will open up additional types of fishing for me -- and it just sounds fun.  Right now I'm just trying to learn more about it before I take the plunge.

Edit: added a picture of my "big" catch in Texas

Welcome Taylor

I'm boatless  in Berkeley but  should be getting a kayak soon. I'm signed up for kayak classes at CCK in Oakland January 14 & 20.

I surf fish the Point Reyes area also and have pretty good luck using Berkeley sand worms. Use a high/low or Carolina rig cast out and retrieve very slow. That setup should net you some nice perch.

Cool,
Maybe I'll sign up for a class there too.  Seems like a good way to give it a try.

Yeah, our first month out here we saw a great white at Limantour chasing a grey whale and calf.  They all go really close to the beach and when the wave broke over the great white you could see both dorsal and tail fin sticking way out of the water.  Everyone on the beach was yelling shark!

Welcome to the madness.

What sort of supercomputers do you work with? In the distant past, I spent a fair bit of time playing around with various Cray computers.

Welcome Taylor.  As self-appointed NCKA Sage and Guru, or least an old grumpy guy, I sometimes take liberties on the board.

We all have handles and I hereby deem you to be CrayFish, Forevermore.

Touch of Calstar 196  with a Penn 975 on each shoulder!

PM me with your phone # I can help you get started with your needed equipment.

I mostly work with Cray systems as well.  They still produce some of the largest systems in the US.

Welcome aboard, Taylor!!!  Kayak fishing is a whole lot better than treading water fishing.  You won't be disappointed.
