Here's what I do when I'm not using the rod.
When I am using it I want nothing in my way; no leash, no noodle, Nothing.

I am paranoid. I use both Surf to Summit rod leashes and pool noodles. These leashes have a quick release, which I only clip in when paddling to and from fishing grounds. I fish with the rod unclipped.

The pool noodle I split down the middle, and cut out a small wedge so that the cross section looks like a "C", so it can be wrapped around the rod without play. I then use contact cement to glue the 2 edges together. I rotate the glued seam away from the line, so it will not rub against the line.

I use pool noodle floats too and have dumped a rod a handful times usually in FW when I am not paying attention. In the salt I have lost rods in a shore break half wipeout and was able to quickly retrieve them because they were floating like corks. Well worth the pain of use for me at least. I don't use leashes due to the tangling while overboard issue.

No leashes except one for my paddle.   But I do use a bungee tarp ball to loop over my reel handle for launching and landing.  Yes, i've lost rods.... and it hurts too! But I would rather loose the rod than be tangled up in the water with my kayak on top of me.

I have farmed 2 rods in the last 7 years. All of my rods are custom built so losing one is like losing a best friend. I leash everything and unleash to fight fish and leash when landing the fish.

I lost a bunch of rods when I first started kayak fishing.
Some due to dumping, but most of them are when I was trying to put them back in the rod holders & popped out of my hand (due to my short arms)... Really sucky thing is losing the reel since most of the time the reels are more expensive than rods.
Since I switch to Baidarkas, I haven't lost any rods (but I did drop them occasionally).  They are now discontinued & brakes easy, but they still replace them every time).
Tried leash them but felt claustrfuk, so no more.
I think pool noodles are great!

While fishing Berry last month I met a guy who asked me how I liked my foam rod float - a freebie from yakhopper's Silver Lake event.

We got to talking and this pontoon fisher showed me a small float that his father in law had devised. He tossed one to me told me to try it. Nice guy, Steve was his name.

BTW: I personally have lost a rod/reel at Berry, fly box at silver, net in the American River, blah blah blah.
Stuff just falls overboard sometimes, I'm just hoping I don't drop my glasses or camera, that reminds me I gotta put a float on the camera, almost lost it this past weekend! :smt009

Sorry to be slow on the post on this product but I was hoping I'd f'up and get to do a product review of it! :smt044

I got the 3 pack of floats from ACK and they seem to work good. $10.99. I'm. Sure you must be able to get them around here too. Pipe insulation works too. We have that on all of the HOW rods.
