Speedy recoveries Victor. No excuse for that as a kayak angler and boat owner. As Eric said, sue the s**t out od that bastard. It just breaks my heart that boat owners can be so negligent.  :smt011

Eric,

I'll be there Thursday to Sunday. Fishing Trinidad and HBO on my way home. I have some experimental pac butt and salmon lures I have been working on as well as a new harpoon design. Harpoons are legal, right? :smt007 Looking forward to catching up with some old friends. Pot is legal too, right?  :smt044  So many changes since I left Cali. LOL If anyone wants another team-mate, let me know. I promise I won't fall in and need to be rescued.

Scott

Need to get Etiene back up here and get Dawn Patrol going again! Glad you are coming back.

Thanks Jimbo. Your boys are probably in High School now. Look forward to catching up. Scott

Pay It Forward / Re: Melanoma sucks

God bless you and your family Eugene. Molly waits for Robin on the other side. Cancer is a journey and Robin fought the good fight like Molly, Joel and Chef. In the end, we are all touched by the courage and dignity of the those who have traveled the the journey of cancer. Regardless of how the journey ends, their spirit and memories are ingrained in our hearts and souls forever and we are better people because of it. Not to diminish your loss because she was a special person and we will miss her dearly. Give Nathan a hug for me. He is a warrior like his mother. Rest in peace Robin.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Trout Lures
« on: October 24, 2016, 08:06:44 AM »
I fish mainly 12-14" stockers these days as big mutant Lassen's are a Norcal thing. Ha ha, I do miss Shadow Cliff's. 90% of the fish I have caught kayak trolling are on the following lures:

Rapala J-7 Brook Trout or Rainbow Trout - > 14" hatchery trout
Rapala F-5 Brook Trout or Rainbow Trout 12"-14" hatchery trout
Rapala GSR-4 Perch > 14" hatchery trout
Rapala JSR-5 Silver Shad or Blue Shad - > 14" hatchery trout
Kastmaster 1/4 oz Blue/Silver, Firetiger >14" hatchery trout
Superduper 1/8 oz silver 12"-14" hatchery trout
Black or Olive Gold Bead Wooly Bugger >14" hatchery trout
Flatfish F-4 Perch Scale - 12"-14" hatchery trout

I do upscale the hooks on the J-7 to size 8 red Gamakatsu's and use a Rapala knot on the J-7 and F-5 and of course Procure on everything. I have been using a lot of custom designed hoochies for mixed species trolling (trout, kokanee, king) with daisy chained hoochie gang trolls which I make with Mac smile blades. They work well but nothing out fishes the Rapala J-7 and F-5 under most conditions unless they are deep. Their only weakness is the double trebles are hard on the fish if you are fishing CNR which I do a lot these days as catching a limit is often pretty easy.

Kayak Sailing / Re: Capsizing AI
« on: June 19, 2016, 07:25:36 AM »
The AI is surprisingly difficult (but not impossible) to capsize. I have never capsized mine, but neither do I sail it very hard. I have had it on the bay in 15-20kt wind with 4' wind waves and didn't come close to capsizing it but it wasn't fun sailing either. The AI is a kayak converted to a sailboat and consequently the mast is much farther forward than a normal sailboat. This makes the bow submerge when reaching at a relatively slow speed which slows the boat down making pitch-poling unlikely. Like any sailboat, if the full sail is deployed on a beam reach and you take a gust over 20 kt, there is a significant chance of capsizing. There are certainly reports of AI's capsizing in this scenario. The other common scenario for AI's capsizing is in the surf zone. I have not seen any reports of an AI capsizing running or on a broad reach. I came back from the Soquel hole through the jaws at Moss landing running down wind with 15-20kt tail wind and a 6' trailing sea and it felt like it was going to pitch-pole but the mast being far forward spills the wind as the stern lifts up and slows the boat down.

Bottom line, the AI is probably more difficult to capsize than a real sailboat, but it is also more difficult to control than a real sailboat in heavy air sailing close hauled. It doesn't point very well and in heavy air the weather helm is really bad so if your destination is upwind, you are in for a long slog, peddling like a madman. If the current is against you, you are basically screwed. I had an unpleasant sailing trip on the bay and although not in danger, it wasn't fun either. I know a lot of guys get obsessed trying to improve the sailing performance of the AI, but for myself, the AI is a fishing platform first, a recreational/family sailing vessel second. If I wanted to sail in technical conditions or sail really fast, I would buy a vessel designed to do that, like a Hobie catamaran. 16' Hobie cat vs 16' AI, no contest in any conditions. The bay  can be fairly technical sailing but if things go bad, there are lots of places to land. Just hope it's not west Oakland.  :smt005

It's my favorite yak ever. Only had 3 problems, the seat attachment breaking, gear track came unglued and a crack near the rear scupper. All of these were corrected in subsequent models. I moved to WA which is why I haven't posted in awhile. I use my AI on the Columbia or when condition are marginal with outboard. I use the Eddyline for Rock fishing, any beach launch, some ocean salmon, all lakes and all small rivers. For me at my age, getting the yak on the roof can be a drag particularly after a long day of trolling. The Eddyline is so easy to rack compared to the AI which is why  lot of the Islanders own one. It's a paddlers kayak. If you love paddling you will love any Eddyline. They are made for paddlers. People who start in Hobies have trouble appreciating  sweet paddling ride because they don't paddle enough to develop proficient strokes. It was Molly's favorite yak. Every once in awhile I will around looking for her in the tank well. RIP girl.

Nice report and pics. Things have been a little extreme up north but steelies and kokes are on the hit list for the next month when the WX lays down. Say hey to the kids for me. Scott

Looks good Dave. I have been using the zuk on the Columbia a lot. I found that it runs better if the the water level is 1.5-1.75" above the cavitation plate unlike the 1" recommended in the manual. When it was 1" the prop would lose traction on big swells or boat wakes. Hope all is well. Scott

General Fishing Tips / Re: Can I target vermillion?
« on: July 06, 2015, 06:45:51 AM »
Rock fish are pretty stupid. It is usually not about the what, it's about the where and when. If the conditions are right and they are hungry, you could put a banana peel on a hook and catch them.

Your not getting me with that one. Banana's on boats or kayaks is BAD luck...  :smt003

Alex

Banana peel jigs were popular several years ago and there were a lot of big fish caught on them.  :smt005

I used to fish with a guy who only used one lure for rockfish, a green scampi. He caught big rockfish and lings and out fished me on most days.

Well the tsunami inspired Japanese team beat USA 4 years ago. Now it's time for some revenge. Wambach isn't the force she used to be but it is the 4th of July weekend, we have the home team advantage and not too many injuries. Let's go USA.

PAs are pretty popular in SCAL and I have seen a lot of them out of La Jolla. Seen a few roll in the surf and it didn't seem they had trouble getting it upright and re entering. They were smaller PAs though. Any boat can flip, even Islands with 2 Amas. 240 pounds is a lot of boat. Can't imagine pulling something that heavy around. Of course I am old and have a bad back.
