Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Kayak Waist Puller Design?
« on: February 03, 2023, 12:40:28 PM »
I like the harness but need something solid to hold the yak off my ankles.... like a hard yoke kind of a thing.... something that works both up and down hill.

I have a strap long enough to loop over my shoulders but eventually the yak clips my backside depending on how high I hold it.

I've been thinking about buying a harness for ~1 mile launches. Maybe a piece of PVC the strap can run through with some padding on the end for downhill?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: electric motor suggestions

I don’t know anything about them, but was intrigued by the motor that goes on/into the Hobie guardian plate. For the older outback they have one that is rudder mounted.

I'm doing a DIY version on my hobie lynx that sits in the guardian plate. Probably should have just bought the TPP. Every time I DIY, the time spent seems to make it a worse deal than just spending the $.  :smt003

Best way to re-heat crab?  I accidentally boiled one that I had already cooked and kept in my cooler.  Not a good texture...  Thought I was only gonna steam, but guess too much water.  I've had good results tossing my cooked crab on a bbq though.

I like to toss mine in a hot oven on a sheet pan with a little oil, garlic and whatever else I feel like. Something like scallions, ginger, soy sauce/cooking wine and finish with cilantro.

Cool tip. I'll have to try it out. Already have butcher paper from bbqing as well. Last couple attempts vacuum packing whole halves left me with popped bags so I've just been vac-packing crab cakes.
It might be a waste of bags but after my first attempt leaked I just shoved the whole fail in a new bag and it sealed like a boss double bagged... :smt006

I've done that too with fish where a bone popped the bag, and it works, but we are still eating crab we saved Jewli0n's way that I caught back when the season opened, and it's great. Ran out of butcher paper, and baking parchment works too, but I do two layers.
I'm lovin' this discovery due to timeline of harvesting crab...the texture is prolly 15-20% sacrificed but all the flavor remains... :smt006

Yeah, I've noticed texture is the first to go. Made some Bun Rieu with my last batch of frozen crab where the texture didn't matter so much.

Introductions / Hello from Napa

Grew up in Marin spending most of my childhood fishing for just about any species from boat, shore and occasionally kayak. Living in Napa now for 10+ years. I make swimbaits and historically I am most often out tossing them for bass in my local lakes on my bass boat (and in the past 2 years on my kayak). I also do a fair bit of surf fishing for perch/striper and crab snaring for dungies.

I purchased an Old Town 120PDL ~1.5 years ago to fish the Napa river for striper (CNR with swimbaits/lures) and the local lakes when I didn't want to tow the boat. Am now finding myself wanting to take the kayak out more than the boat. Less hassle/ maintenance, some exercise and a fun fishing experience in general. I ended up buying a Hobie Lynx which I'm able to carry down the muddy bank of the napa river by my house without a cart (which was quite a pain with the heavier 120pdl). I still have both yaks though.

For 2023 I'm interested in doing some Halibut fishing on the yak and breaking out of my normal routine a bit. I've fished most of the normal SF Bay hali spots in the past from a boat (Paradise, Berkeley Flats, ARW, AI etc). I did some shore fishing in waders over at Point Pinole last year and am curious to try taking my Lynx out there. Pretty quick drive for me and seems protected from the big winds on the NE side. Also curious about launching at various spots in Marin when I'm down visiting family (marin islands, paradise etc).

I'll stop before this gets too long.  :smt003
