Someone is selling a used one down by me for $80. Anyone used this model or have any thoughts on it? Thanks.

I have the hx300, which seems to have the same feature set. Durable, floats, haven't had any issues the last 3 years, and I expect to use it forever, unless I lose it (which is what happened to my previous HSxxx radio).

I bought an HX 300 for a backup or for visitors and it works as well as my HX 870, but with fewer features.  The HX 300 is available in like new condition from Amazon Warehouse Deals for $88.

I have the HX290.  The radio itself is solid, battery last all day and more (I use it mostly on scanning mode all day).  However, the charger is a piece.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, you have to wiggle the power cable just right to work (after about 1.5 years).  I would buy it again.  Please note that the battery last longer because it's bigger/thicker, so may not fit regular PFD radio pocket.

Good point about battery life.  The HX300 battery lasts 1.5X longer than the HX870 battery.  Both radios fit easily in the electronics pocket of my Kokatat Bahia Tour PFD.

Thanks for the input everyone.  Looks like I'll be comparing the 290 and 300 and purchasing appropriately.

Looks like the hx290 needs a cradle for charging.  The HX300 can be charged via usb port so its pretty easy to charge just about anywhere.  I own a HX300 and really like it.
