Hojoman,

You really are a native Californian, aren't you :)   That'd be ice the kids are standing on.

Scott

Biggest pike Ive ever caught was a hitchhiker on a 17 inch lmb and he would not let go, super aggro. There's a way to filet them that removes the little strip of baby bones that SUCK, but you lose some meat in the prosess, if the fish is big enouph it doesnt matter.
My big northern was 19 lbs. I would love to do a Lk Davis trip.
Nice work bro, got me fired up for some sweet water toothies!

Thanks. I consider that a compliment. But I'm from Mississippi, where it rarely ever got cold enough to freeze lakes. I moved out here because the fish are a tad bigger.

Pike are actually fun to catch as long as you can get your lure back without them biting your hand off.

I'm not sure why I didn't think of this before for lingcod.   When I used to go pike ice fishing in New York we'd take along a "mouth spreader" which helps you get your hook/lure out of the pikes mouth.  It's basically a spring which closes loaded and you slide it into the pikes mouth and release the spring and it pushes the pikes mouth open.  You can even carry the fish around by the spreader.
Take a look at my little cousin on the left...

Here it is closed..

Depending on the size they cost a few dollars each..

Love those kid fishing shots. Usually don't have trouble getting my lures out of the ling mouths because they are big lures and usually lip hook them. Pike on the otherhand always seem to get hooked deep when I fish them. That spreader is cool kind of like a gopher trap in reverse. Will have to pick one up for my fall Wisconsin trip.
