I was admiring my favorite old reel. A Pflueger 1492 with the bacolite handle and beveled arms on the reel cage. It still has the original brass reel seat ( un cut ) many of the fisherman back in the day cut the seal seat down to fit the rods of the day. I know it isnt worth alot but still really cool and functions smooth as the day it was made. Does anyone else have some cool old flyreels they might like to post pictures of ? Paging ScottV?? I would really like to see some cool shit like an old Pflueger Gem

I have and use some old Pflueger 1492s. They are 30+ years old but don't have the ring like that one. I think yours is older. I have a split bamboo that was brought back from WW11. It belonged to my Neighbor's Father. He gave it to me a few years ago. I have never tried it out.
Thanks for posting

I believe this reel is from the 1960s My friend who gave it to me recieved it as a gift from his father when he returned from Veitnam in the 70s and it belonged to his father prior to that. but thats all I know about it.

The 1492 isnt rare infact it is common but the 1492 Medalist is definately a classic trout reel. I have yet to see another in person this old or in this good of shape.

Seminole Portage fly reel belonged to my Grandfather. Detail shows a man carrying a canoe. Postage stamp for scale, reel not more than 1 3/4 diameter removed old silk line cause that stuff gets nasty after decades of hot CA summers.

WOW!!! thats f'n cool!!
-
I'll let you fish with it if you want to David.

Cool reel Capt. I went to Tijuana in the late 60s and bought some switchblades for a dollar each, neighbor wanted to trade a fly rod for one Fenwick FF108, I said deal, saved up my allowance and bought a 14951/2 with a Scientific Anglers WF10S I think it was like $12 for both all still work. Never forget the first day I took it out Brown's Hole lost most of the fish I hooked but landed 2 I was a proud puppy, Dad only caught 1 on casting gear.
-
fuckin nice glass rod Mike!!! i remember you tellin me about it. Isnt that the reel I gave you!

Dude ya gotta let me cast that fenwick! I will slay steel with that old dog!!!
-
I fished for 20 years with a Fenwick fiberglass just like that. Still have it. Great rod.

Surprising there isnt more cool shit popping up considering the numbers of great fisherman on the site. I know quite a few of us are flyfishers as well as conventional gear and I know we dont always fish outta yaks and boats. love the old glass rods I wanna see more!!

Hey Mike, What else could you get in Tiajuana for a dollar in the late 60s :smt002

1494 in box with paper work i have had since i was 9, a gift from my uncle, so almost 40 years, and many of my first trout on the fly came on this reel :smt003

Always wished I would've gotten into flyfishing. My Dad was all about it.

Real cool Cameron! thanks for sharing. Eric your Dad has great taste is reels. Hardy are my favorite I own some nice modern reels but I prefer my Hardy Princess for steelhead fishing . Am I correct in assuming your Father wrote that book? Soooo cool... you should give flyfishing a try you would enjoy it. Its alot easier than people make it out to be.

When I do fly fish, it is with a Medalist 1495. My father gave it to me sometime in the early '60's. It's been beat, trashed and abused for 50 years and still functions. Also have a 1495 1/2DA which I acquired this century. I have a 1498DA with lead core for trolling. All old enough to be made in the USA. In addition I have a Chinese knock-off of the 1495 that I use for parts to keep my original functioning. Not being a fly-fishing purest, I can't for the life of me understand why some spend the big bucks for a reel that's main function is to store line. Maybe someone could help me out on that.

Bill spending big bucks makes reels memorable. I vividly remember leaving my Ross Reels Gunnison in a backpack by big Chico Creek in a daze of drunkenness and self pity. It was not a particularly wonderful albeit expensive piece of equipment but I'll never forget it. 😏

Its a preference thing! I bought a spare spool a few years back for the old 1492 and it works perfect. so yeah the new parts work on the old stuff. I like the old style click/pawl drag for Steelhead but some people spend big $$ for a nice disc drag. Again I think its just a perference thing.

My Dad did write that book. I'll flyfish at some point.

Awesome, have any old Perfects? I thumbed through that book at a fly fishing show once, very cool. Nothing like the hardy click/pawl sound. 4" Perfect prices went through the roof with all the spey casters now. I have a 4" Bougle for my spey rods, a couple of Marquis 10's from the 80's and a Sage 508 made by Hardy, love clickers. Had a Winston green 4" Farlex made for me so that pre-war Perfect with the 1912 check is going to have to wait a while.

CptSloppywood,
That's a cool reel, and Medalist aficionados like the round guides for sure. But don't plan on retiring on the proceeds from its sale. I can't tell from your pictures, but does it have the spool arbor, or the sculptured pillar arbor? If the latter, then you might realize a little over a hundred from its sale. If the former, then more likely less than the hunski. Collectors that pay the high prices like minty, in box reels. Yours has been well loved, dropping its dollar value, though increasing its personal value.
As for cool old reels, well I do have something similar to yours. A pre '39 1494, and possibly even one from the first couple of years of production. It only has a single pawl, vs 2. And of course the pillar arbor. But I'm about 7000 miles from home, so no pictures :smt009
