General Talk / Free Firewood
« on: December 01, 2022, 10:03:54 AM »

I recently bought some land up in Mountain Ranch.    It's 14 acres of Butte Fire damaged trees.     I had a masticator crew go thru a few months ago and clear the land where I plan on building.  Now there's tons of  wood  on the ground ,, it'll just rot if not harvested.   I hate seeing it all go to waste.

If anyone is in need of firewood there's a lot of great burning Oak available.   Some is already cut into rounds, it splits easily with a Maul...   A lot of trees still standing,  all of it is well seasoned  Black Oak.
All of it is easily accessible..

For Sale / Kayak Sailor 1.6m $400.
« on: April 11, 2019, 10:59:15 AM »
Selling my  Kayaksailor.  This is the larger 1.6 m sail..   There's a few parts included that I fabricated to fit my Raptor.

This sail is still in  like new condition.    Asking 400.

When used with the G2, you would not need the leeboards as the mirage fins serve as a keel .

Thanks
Jim

Santa Cruz / Mounting a 3hp motor
« on: February 26, 2017, 08:08:46 AM »
I got a request to mount this beast to a customers G2.
It's a stripped down 503 Torqeedo motor with a high capacity lithium battery, rated  18 ah at 29 volts and 560 watts..   He wanted me to do the install so that it can be swapped out with a rudder for times he might not want the motor.

This 503 is much heavier than my Torqeedo ultra light (about twice the size)   so I decided to fabricate a backing plate to distribute the load across the entire back section of the kayak.  I fashioned that out of wood and then glassed the entire part for added strength and to water-proof it against dry-rot.
Next I had to re-rigged the control cables using dyneema cord and Harken pulleys.     Custom fabricated each part so that it can be added or removed within seconds.

A lot of unknowns still, we don't know what the speed is going to be.  I'm guessing close to 10 mph !

. Still waiting on a report from YAK YAK YAK...  :smt005 :smt005 :smt005
C'mon man ,,, !!!    Have you put this in the water yet?  It's been a whole week already !!!!   :smt006

Santa Cruz / 2017 G2 model.
« on: December 08, 2016, 09:49:10 AM »
Same as the 2016, except for a few changes.
First off,  I raised the center hatch ring 1.5" above the deck height.  Found the heavier paddlers had water coming up through the scuppers ,washing across the deck hatch.   Those hatches have not been reliable, causing a sinking in two cases...  Good news is  we've just found a great new center hatch to replace it.     This one has a toggle style lever to lock / release it.  Made in USA!  was an important factor in the decision.

Second big change is the rudder.   This new one is in the design / testing stage still.  This will have the ability to quickly remove with a release pin.   It allows for a better control cable connections.  Plus you can adapt an electric trolling motor to it in seconds without any tools.  Basically you can swap the rudder for a motor,, or vice versa.    Still trying out different rudder blades and shapes to decide which performs best.
Hoping to get out and fish,,,, uhh " Product Test"   :smt002   this weekend.

If anyone is thinking about it, I'd appreciate some company    Short notice,,, I know ( sorry ) .     Wed morning is looking really calm.   I'd like to find another spot besides HMB.       Moss Landing is sounding good.   Most is deeper waters. I'm planning on dropping between 100 - 150 '.  :smt006

General Talk / Fishing Venice LA
« on: July 25, 2016, 03:06:17 PM »

Here's a video of my trip last week to Venice with the "30 Miles Out" crew.      My first time fishing for these Redfish... what a blast.

Some pretty interesting stories from the boat captains taking people out on the Tuna charters.   Best one was a 7' hammerhead getting swallowed whole by a 14' Tiger...
