Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / thurs tbay again
« on: October 19, 2023, 02:48:52 PM »
Hot on Tbay today although when I left around 1 the NW breeze came up. Long day. First fish was the biggest leopard shark I've ever hooked. I tried to save my jig but it made a shake as I had the leader in left hand and long needle nose in right and the frayed leader parted. Finally got a bite. Medium size halibut which you can see trailing beside me, dog, reel and yak. Saw no other action from the two or three PB's out. Season is coming to an end. Maybe one more trip.

My son and I went to Tbay today. I caught a couple near Hog. Not large but no need to measure. A few days ago when this site was down we went out and got limits, four fish. Nice ones. Largest was over 20#. Next day we went out again and not a bite between us. It is hit and miss in Tomales this year. I have no advice for anyone fishing Tbay, having had more skunks this year than fish.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / bar venture tbay

So, I finally decided to go to Lawsons, pay 10 for entry and 3 for a kayak launch and  try for the halibut on the bar. One crab which bit off the tail of my swimbait, one 20 inch ling that falsely raised my hopes for three seconds, and a lot of pedal push against the tide to get out to the Tomales entrance marker buoy. Eight or nine PB's out there but I saw no action and they dispersed after awhile, The bar area can run 9 to 30 plus feet in a hurry. Not a bad ride from Lawsons but not a short distance either. After enough time of no bites and fighting the incoming current I went to the west side and worked the 30 to 20 foot depths. No love  and by then the south wind came up ferociously so pedaled to the landing and called it a day. If one lives there and goes out every day you will connect with a fish but today was barren , at least for me. Pic is the return to Lawsons. Choppy.

Well, once again I had to see if any halibut had entered the bay. I started south of Hog and jigged for awhile then since I wanted to cover a long stretch of water, set up a small flasher, 12 ounce ball sinker and a Green Label herring threaded with an Easy baiter and 5 ought salmon hook. All the way to marker no. 5 against the incoming tide. At no. 5 I saw some boats and thought maybe they were on fish, but no, crabbers and snare tossers. I switched back to a swimbait and kept going toward the bar but finally figured it was pointless so started back. By now the tide switched so against the outgoing I pedal, stopping every so often to test past favorite spots. All the way to Hog with sloppy/wind now blowing so I quit. If I didn't have the dog with me I might have tried the bar. Sore legs when I got home.

I do not think there are many halibut in yet. Water was warm enough but pretty much a blank screen for bait. Possibly the best area might be around Lawsons and the bar.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / tbay friday

A quick report for Tbay today. Nada, nothing, zero. A few pb's running around trying fishing in between crab pot checks but I saw no action fishing below Hog around yellow can and channel marker, Beautiful when I launched around 9:30 but by noon a biting SE wind with chop sent me back to the launch. Probably too early yet for Tbay unless one went to Inverness. Water wasn't too cold judging by hand immersion but maybe four foot of vis and very very little bait sign. Maybe try again in a couple of weeks.

Off the Oregon coast 1919. Wish I had a time machine. Pic located on Salty History files. I typed in Salty History Bodega Bay and a plethora of old photos appeared from San Diego to Astoria Oregon concerning fishing and boats and shipwrecks and huge fish catches.

Here's a couple of pics of Stillwater North after the storm . I guess you can imagine what the changes in launching a yak from there later this year will be like. Maybe, but probably not, sand will be pushed up to the walkway. More probable, will be sand washed out leaving tons of rock and boulders to try and wheel the kayak through.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / salt point drowning
« on: October 21, 2022, 05:45:51 AM »
A friend was on a group walk yesterday at Salt Point and spotted an inflatable very close to the breaker line fishing. She thought that they were way too close and sure enough got flipped by a breaking wave. Two guys made it to shore, one sunk. She watched his head bob up and down briefly then sink. CG alerted. Copter sent. Two survivors lifted to top of bluffs. My friend spoke to the youngest one about 18 years old and lent him her jacket and cell phone to call home in Sacramento to his parents. Russian's she thought. What goes through the mind of some people on the water I'll never know but fishing on the breaker line at Salt  Point is pure ignorance and of course, no PFD for at least one of the three is absolute foolishness. Darwin.
If I find out more after speaking to my friend today I will post. She was quite upset when she called after getting home.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / tuesday Tbay

Looks like the last one of the year for me at Tbay. All the way down past last channel marker that  parallel's Lawsons. No bites, not even a tap. No one else fishing there either and I saw no boats in the bay drop a line. The few trailers in the parking lot were for boats out chasing Lawson report fish off 10 mile beach. Nice water, plenty of bait around but no action for me. Long pedal against the outgoing, which was a mild outflow, to get back to Miller's. Workout. Hotdogs for dinner tonight.

Foggy start at Tbay yesterday. Took awhile to get close enough to Hog to actually see the island. There were half a dozen PB's just south of it so I dropped in there and floated with the incoming for awhile without action then crossed to the west bank to work a favorite spot also with no action. Finally the tide begin to ebb and I started my long drift toward Lawsons which was where I wanted to go. Past Toms point, past channel marker without a tap and I figured no sense in going further plus I had an appointment at three I had to keep so against the outgoing all the way up without a stop to try one more drop just below Hog. Barren. Reel up and push for the launch. Workout! Tomales!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / tbay today
« on: September 16, 2022, 06:28:16 PM »
Got in the water about 7 AM and did not go to yellow can hotspot of the other day. I rode the outgoing past White Gulch, past Toms Point past Lawsons, and past marker number three which is getting close to the bar. Bite and got it then go ashore for a minute to straighten up and put fish in front hatch in that dog was with me today sitting in back hatch. No sooner than I made another drop and bang. Another one. Thought for sure one more was coming but that didn't happen. By now the incoming tide is flowing pretty good and I gave up the struggle to get back to the "spot" and elected to make the long drift back. Nada for bites. I'm tired and call it a day and pedal for the launch site. Only 5 vehicles left in the lot upon return. Where fish are in Tomales any given day I have no idea. Just hope I go over their attentive heads.

I went to Tbay today to escape the heat as much as fish. Flat calm and warm on the water when I started but after awhile here comes the NW. Whitecaps all over but I pressed to get in the lee of the west bank and wait for the tide to turn to ebb so I could go below Toms Point. Wind was such that I wasn't going to make it so kept fishing in close then after hearing a halibut flap flap flap on a tin boat in the middle I ventured out there doing half assed drifts with incoming wind and outgoing tide. Bite! Only bite of the day. I fish hard for another and then here comes FG bearing straight at me. Got any fish. Year one. It's well over 22 inches. We want to see it. So they come close and I tell them it is in the front hatch and you open it up. They do. Nice fish they say and mention that most of the boats they checked had zero. They release me and I start fishing again and here comes a wind switch. South wind. Gusty. Whitecaps. I try to find some shelter and then it dies down and I while I let it push me across the bay it comes up strong again. I quit after nearing Hog and pedal back to the launch. End of day.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / tbay late afternoon
« on: August 26, 2022, 07:04:25 AM »
I usually leave my place early to secure a parking space at Millers but thought to try much later in the day to catch the outgoing and fish my way toward the bar. Got there after one, found a spot next to Blue Kayak Adventures with three trailers of gear. A group of kids. with over 20 yaks were on the edge of the bay at the end of the launch waiting to paddle. I got ready and they were in the water when I wheeled over with loaded yak. I went south of Hog through masses of eelgrass floating. Must be the start of die-off season for grass and explains the outer bay being full of it. Long float down to well below Toms Point and I get the bite, the only bite of the day. Nice fish, over 30 inches. I continued to fish and work my way back without a bite then decided to quit. Long pedal against the outgoing to get back to the van. As I've mentioned before, there is a sprinkling of fish around but very few and scattered. Gotta be lucky to hook up and hope the bite is a solid hook job. I still have to retrieve what's left of my jig in the fish gullet when I bury the carcass this morn.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / dismal tbay today
« on: August 09, 2022, 04:36:21 PM »
Last couple of Tbay trips have been busts. Got to Millars at 6 and maybe one car parked in the lot. Several PB's were waiting for tide to come in to launch. Not a good sign. I headed to yellow can with the incoming then moved to the west side but grew  tired of fighting the current so drifted past Pelican Point and worked that area. After a stretch out on the sand I pedaled toward White Gulch and fished the west side for nada. Time went by and I'm midway between Hog and west bank when I get a mediocre kind of bite, sort of like the fish says,"I really don't want it but I'll take a pass and not get hooked. More time goes by and I'm tired of it. Tide has changed but west wind neutralizes the drift. Get another desultory bite and that's it. Head back. Only catching I saw was the raccoon munching on edibles at low tide.

I arrived 5:15 to make sure I got my favorite park spot. The Ecology cleanup crew was gone so my choice of space. First drop at 6:16 S of Hog. Work the area all the way to Toms Point. Bite at Toms and a nice one, 36 inches. Hooked a 12 inch ling cod or rather should say, snagged, followed by a bat ray. Drifted the incoming back to S of Hog and called it a day. Saw one PB net a fish. Lot more boats out today. Parking  lot was jam packed full on my return.
