I posted a picture of my rod storage setup I made for my Revo-13 and I got a lot of people asking how I made the fluted ends on the rod holders.
First off, I do not claim to be the person who came up with the idea, I actually saw someone else post it here a few years back, but can't find it. So for anyone interested, here is how I did it, step by step.
1. Get a beer bottle .... I prefer a long neck.
2. Empty said bottle, but don't waste it ;0)
3. Get a heat gun .... Don't need anything fancy.
4. Apply heat to outside (approx 1-2 inches of end) of PVC.
5. Also apply heat to inside of PVC.
6. Push heated end of PVC down neck of bottle.
7. Repeat steps 4 to 6 untill desired results are aquired.
8. After results are aquired, hold pressure of PVC against bottle till cool.
*NOTE*
As you release pressure on step 6 the first couple times, it will be normal for PVC to shrink back to towards original shape until cool.
Good luck,
Hope this helps

For this process, cheaper [emoji481] seems to work the best as you may have to repeat several times to truly get an empty bottle.
PVC (also known as poor man's lumber) is the most utilized material in a man cave ( right up there with duct tape).
Yes,
You can mount these on Annie's rack ... ?
Lol!!!
Have fun and make something beautiful

This method works better if you use new unwasted beer bottle for each pvc flute.

Thanks for the info.
Does the PVC stink when you heat it like that? I always cut it with a chop saw, and even that creates a pretty foul odor.

Haven't noticed any smell, but then again, I tend to spend most of the project time making sure the bottle is empty.

Thanks for the tip. Just finished fluting a rod holder of black ABS pipe. It was a tight fit for the rod butt without the expansion but should be an easier on the water insert now.

Great job. Would've never thought of that myself.

To me, it looks more like a clarinet than a flute.

PVC is poly vinyl chloride.

Old thread, I know...playin' catch up...lol
When I did mine a few years ago, I took advantage of my woodworking skills/tools and routed a 5/8" wide slot before I flared the pipe out (had to make a bit of a jig hold the pipe and guide the router. I also found that I liked the flare for this better with a champagne bottle. I heated the pipe sections in the oven at 200ish degrees for 30 minutes or so and that made the pipe (Schedule 40 electrical conduit) nice and flexible. When I did the flares I made sure I had a coupler fitted over the bottoms so they'd maintain shape for later gluing and just did them one at a time with insulated gloves shaping them to the bottle, then placing each in the freezer for a few minutes to cool back down. I'm happy with the results as far as the pipe goes...want to rebuild the overall assembly for other reasons. Will post a step by step when I do that...

Why not use a pot of boiling water? No, dummy, not to drink! To heat the pipe.

I guess if you wanted to fire up the outside burner and burn a bunch of propane or steam up LaCasa, that would be an option...lol...took at least 20 minutes at 200 before I found schedule 40 conduit pliable enough for my liking.
