My wife convinced me to go to my aunt and uncle's 50th wedding anniversary :smt013  in SD next weekend (June 16-18).  Part of the deal is that we will leave early enough so that I can fish Friday and/or Saturday before the party :smt001.  I plan to take out a buddy who has a kayak but has never fished from it.  Does anyone have any pointers regarding fishing down in that area, tackle, bait, locations, etc?  We will probably launch from La Jolla and head out toward the kelp.  Any and all information is appreciated.  I will provide a report upon my return.

Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to check out some of the SoCal kayak fishing sites.

http://www.bigwatersedge.com/
http://www.kayak4fish.com

I haven't fished there myself (despite living there for few years a little while back) but from what I understand it pretty much works as follows...

Launch at La Jolla shores and paddle out past the marine reserve..
Use a sabiki to make bait and put the bait in your livewell or bait tube
If you get bait, paddle around until you mark fish and flyline the bait on a decent sized bait hook until you catch something (yellowtail, white sea bass, etc..) and hang on.
If you don't make bait try yo-yo a jig or start trolling.

Other options include fishing the kelp beds for kelp bass using swimbaits.

Evidently they've had decent white sea bass fishing recently.   Anyway, search the forums on the SoCal sites and I'm sure you'll figure it out.  If you're lucky maybe someone who knows what they're doing will go out with you.   Well, at least that's what we would do for a visitor up here in NorCal.

I am NO expert, but here's what I've learned so far:

Get there EARLY (0430-0500).  You'll get parking and bait.  Make bait by the pier before light or at first light.

Troll flylined and weighted (2 oz) mackeral.

Lots of folk fish straight Sectra to cut kelp if you get wrapped.

Toss surface irons at YT and WSB on the surface.

Make sure you stay out of the reserve when fishing or making bait.

Watch the wind.

After you get skunked walk along the boardwalktowards the pier... :smt007

Thanks.  That all sounds good except for the "after you get skunked" part.  I found a good article in Western Outdoor News on kayak fishing for calicos.  I will definitely get some details on the reserve boundaries (don't want to piss off the man) and check out those links.

True.... LaJolla is one gorgeous place to get skunked.  It doesn't hurt so bad when you're in someplace like that.

sackyak,
Just a reminder if you've never fished with bigger live baits (Pacific mackerel, Spanish mackerel) before.  Match hook size with your bait, if you have a 10" bait you should be using at least 3/0 hook (preferably some Owner hooks or something else that's as strong and sharp).  The most important thing is to have patience when your bait gets picked up.  Do not set the hook immediately, count to 10 then set the hook (if you are flylining), not too aggressively.  It will take them (yellowtail & white sea bass) a little time to get that bait down.  I've never caught either off a kayak but I've seen too many people lose yellowtail from setting the hook too early (at least when using mackerel for bait).  Usually goes like this:  "I've been hooking them up all day but I keep losing them."  Have a great time down there and bring some 4" or 5" casting lures for bonito which can be a blast.  I hope you hook up to a 'tail, to me they are the hardest fighting fish pound for pound.
