I've heard of Cobra and they make some seriously low cost units. It does make me a little skeptical of quality though. One thing I thought about when buying mine was why I needed it. When I thought that it would be for yakfish chit chat I didn't care really. But when I thought of emergencies on the big blue I thought about it again. I remembered frankfishing telling me the story of his yak taking on water and how that little device called in the boys in orange to get him outta that mess... I was convinced. A solid built VHF was worth the coin.

My $00.2

Z

P.S. No matter what you do decide on, make sure that bugger will float. Add a small float if needed.

Yakuza,

I searched the net for any reviews, but like Z, I'm sceptical and wouldn't trust my life with them.  I doubt that they are even water resistant from the description, or lack thereof.   Get a good trusted radio with good reviews and save money elsewhere.   Just my .02 too.   Boat safe, :smt001 -Matt

PS.  Ask Frank Fishing what radio saved his life.  Just my .03  :smt002

I have that set. Bought them at West Marine on sale over a year ago. Wanted my kids to have a radio when we go out on the lake. They are ok if you are close to, and plan to stay close to other people. I found it easier and clearer to just yell at them.

I also have a WM VHF100 and a VHF55. I can hear distant radio calls on the WM radios and not hear a thing on the Cobra's.  Also, the little rubber covers over the charger input have fallen off both radios, and the dry bags have started to split apart at the seams.

I'll sell you my Cobra's for $50.

Al

I second everything that's already been said.

I've got something similar made by Cobra that I use with non-yaking friends as a way to communicate with them when out on the water.  Otherwise, when I go with the big boys of NCKA, I use an Icom m88.  Just remember, you get what you pay for.

Is this a good deal? Half its list price, but the old NiMH battery instead of the new LIon

Dunno about that exact model, but I do know that some on the board have that brand.  Maybe they will give their $0.02.

I've been using using Standard Horizons for 25 years with no problems. With their Guarantee and lifetime flat fee replacement, you will never have to buy another. They routinely test as the most waterproof along with the ICOMS.

I use a Standard Horizon VHF Marine Radio, turned off, yet ready on Channel 16, and ready only for potential emergencies; not for chit chat.  I keep the radio locked in the starboard side pocket of my Stohlquist PFD, next to my emergency whistle and my heart.   It hasn't saved lives and I hope that I never have to use it.

I trained myself about the protocols of how to call for "Pan" and "Mayday".

Anyway, that's how I do it, but I'm certainly no expert.
