Title: 13 foot boat - 16 foot car - what could go wrong?
Post by: Schills206 on September 27, 2017, 11:31:31 AM
I've added front and rear straps after this picture was taken.  Wish me luck!

Looks like a standard setup to me. Good luck! :smt006

I cut two pieces of pvc, attached some rope to each, closed them in the hood and trunk and tied off the front and back of the yak.  Got up to 70mph without a worry.

Cheers!

You should see me when I've got our tandem on top of my VW GTI :-) As others have said and you've already done - bow and stern straps and you're good to go.

Cheers,
Brad

You'll be fine.

I put a 14' boat on top of a 12' car all the time.

I get some funny looks, but so far so good.

I've hauled two 20ft doubles and 3 16ft singles together on a 95" wheelbase vehicle from Sparks NV to SF CA. :smt005

good racks and bow/stern lines all the way!

The only way to travel :smt002

Good hint about the PCV in the hood. Sounds easier than crawling under the car to tie off.

I've hauled my Adventure/Revo 16 on top of my son's civic with no problem.  Run a strap thru the handles and it's not going anywhere without you.

Solid idea.

I did similar with mine to the Sherlock Straps that are on amazon. Took a couple pieces of excess nylon webbing, one for each side under the hood. I doubled them over, burned 2 holes into each, then bolted them down to the front quarter panels with large washers so I've got tie-downs up front always read to go.

Hahah... that looks crazy Rob!  Good luck with that!  Thanks everyone else, I feel a little more confident with the boat up there after all your replies!  I bolted a Thule strap under the hood and use a pulley system on the front.  They have a pvc strap as well for those of you who aren't as handy as Creatura!

Got a picture of that!? That's awesome!

Love the straps under the hood idea.. so there's a line coming up through the crack between hood and fender?

Ya.. I just removed a bolt from the flange inside the hood and bolted the strap down.  You can do this anywhere under the hood where you feel comfortable.  Mine is on the left side of the hood about 6 inches from the front.   It folds under hood when not in use.  I then attached a tension line to the strap and the front handle of the kayak.  Easy peasy!

On our 2008 Subaru Outback I tied a large knot in the end of a para cord loop after passing it through an existing hole on the fenders both sides. Due for a replacement after 3 years but doesn’t hurt the car and holds strong
