Yo fellas,
Mooch went in for a checkup on Friday and the docs decided to keep him, and according to his sis he'll be there at least a few days.
San Mateo General Hospital, rm 218. I'm sure he'd appreciate some friendly faces.
-
Thanks Eric...
-
Thank you for the update.
Al
-
hope he gets better real soon.
-
I'm going to visit tonight.
-
Porky and I were kicking around the idea of doing some kind of fundraising event to help out with his Medical expenses...even with insurance, the bills can add up fast...
Considering maybe a paddle from Cap Pier to the Mile Buoy and back, or maybe from SC to Cap...kinda an Aquatic Wharf to Wharf??
At then end could have a gathering at the Pier and for folks who were interested afterwards a potluck/fish-fry at my place in Capitola...my house is small, but I got space in the front and back to kick it and cook and hang out...
Maybe $25 to participate and Porky would make up a cool T-shirt for everybody who came out...all proceeds to help Mooch out with medical bills...
Not sure what you guys think...if Porky and I are way off base just let me know...
Sincerely,
Jim
-
I'm headed in tonight on my way home, about 1900
-
Visiting hours?
-
Wish I lived closer. Ill be thinking of my buddie!!

Great idea Jim, tho I think the $ should just go into his and his sisters pocket or the killer fishing trip instead of the black hole of the bills- thats going to be paid for by medical.

Good point Ben, obviousy he could use whatever $$ we raise for whatever he needed most...as long as we all know that he gets 100% of the $$ raised/given that is the important thing!!
Sincerely,
Jim

And to promote cancer awareness, if your body feels strange or something ust isn't right, GET CHECKED! This is what my old man never did, too stubborn.
I'd like to see it happen like a Relay for Life event, where the participants gather donations/sponsors for there efforts on the paddle event, and if ya cant paddle, sponsor a paddler.
Its all done in a good positive upbeat fashion and to ultimately promote awareness and life. All money raised would be handed over.
-
Thanks for keeping us in the loop Eric.
I think a fundraiser sounds like a great idea.
-
Just got a text from his sis... He's being released sometime today. So better call before heading down...
If I hear anything else I'll let you know... but hopefully Mooch himself will be posting again soon.

Well said Brent...
I am 100% down to help out any way I can with whatever format you/the group decide will be best...I like the sponsorship concept...like when the kids have a Walk-A-Thon and get sponsored for each mile they walk, we could get sponsors for each mile we paddle!!
Also, the cancer awareness part is a really important concept...cancer sucks and takes on so many different forms and has taken so many great people from us too soon...
Will be proud to help out anyway I can.
Also, an additional fundraising idea for either the night after the paddle, or whenever before or after, is a Texas Hold'em Poker tournament...$25 buy-in for 50 chips, can buy back in for same amount up to a certain time (pre-decided by the group)...can do BYOB...all $$ in pot goes to Mooch. Prizes for top three players (not huge prizes but ones that are cool enough to make it fun!!)...fun, low-key way to get some cash raised up pretty quick.
Sincerely,
Jim
-
Sounds great.
I don't know you personally Mooch, we have exchanged some emails and met once, at night in the HMB lot. I do however want to promote awareness and would love the opportunity to give back for all those people who promoted awareness and life in my family with my dads fight. No better way to promote life, then a paddle on the Big Blue while raising money.
I'm even suggesting people sponsor the paddlers for the entire paddle, as in a flat rate, what ever they can do!
I was thinking Capitola, its centrally located, nice calm waters, and paddling to the mile buoy and back. Then a post gathering at the pier for a few beers and music. Id be willing the throw down for a boat rental to keep an eye on the paddlers.
Wharf to wharf would be nice, but logistically with the parking and getting all the yaks back to SC harbor, where our cars would be, would be tough. (unless we did wharf to wharf to wharf. with and early morning paddle, we could have plenty of parking in cap and by my house if needed. Id be happy to shuttle people to there cars from the wharf if needed.
I know Mooch has some great/close friends here, if they want to make suggestions, please do!
Could talk to the cap pier guys and see if we can get a NCKA band to play?? Just some ideas, id like to give back what was given to my family
-
Just a Thought,
I will be hosting an event at ARW on Sunday. This would be a good time to pass the hat around to help with whatever is needed (all procedes would be handed over to the man or his sis). I will post this on the Roll-Call so many of his friends (family) can help out.
Hope you're doing well Joel, Be strong and we will talk soon.
Eric
-
Great idea, Eric.
I like the simple pass-the-hat plan.
-
FYI
Just stopped by San Mateo General and Mooch had just left the hospital.
-
Yeah, its just a thought, if no ones feeling it, ill prolly do something like this anyway and donate to the childrens hospital, for me its more the awareness part, something passing the hat doesn't accomplish. With hat said, I will certainly pitch in on the hat too! Cant make the event, but Id be happy to send it to you yakhopper..
Have a great day guys, another sunny day!
-
if anyone can contact vince at aquan sports to ok a garage sale type of event i have a lot of gear and stuff to get rid of all for mooch to do whatever they like. i have scuba gear, freediving gear etc..... wetsuits etc....
if someone here can plan it i can give up my gear for mooch. this is a promise.
john
-
Great idea on the fundraiser + I agree with Guitarzan: funds raised are probably better spent for general expenses - the medical bills are likely to be just a giant black hole. Porky's point about awareness-raising would be a good direction and maybe raise money for a cancer org, possibly one that can get involved in Mooch's case.
WTG, yakhopper, on the idea to get things rolling at the ARW event.
Mooch, hang in there & keep the positive energy flowing.
-
FYI - Just went by the hospital, he had been released about an hour ago. :smt001
John/JDyak
-
Lets do it ALL.
Yeah the med bills are a black hole, my old mans bills exceeded a Million $, that Million is what was NOT covered by insurance..
Money for general expenses would be just great!
-
Porky,
I agree with you 100%.
Money can be raised by simply passing a hat...
But $ can also be raised (along with promoting Cancer awareness, celebrating life, strengthening friendship/brotherhood, and appreciating our good fortune to be able to paddle in such a beautiful place) by doing the kind of event that you propose Brent.
Count me in. Every little penny is going to help Mooch out in my opinion, and to do it in a way that gets us out and doing what we love, sounds like the way I want to contribute.
Sincerely,
Jim
-
does someone know vince at aquan? mooch was working there and vince is a reputable man, i think he's love to help. maybe we can do a ncka tournament benefitting mooch and have prizes for the top 3. we can do both divers as well as rod fishermen and all must be done by kayak.
let it be an "at will" tournament so no liabilities and run it in a somewhat loose manner.
i'd be game for any fund raiser for sure. mix in our sport and it will draw a large gathering and entry money + donations to go to mooch to use as he sees fit.
-
Whatever anyone can do would be appreciated, I'm sure.
As far as I know there is no insurance in this case, and about a week of hospital stays with probably more to come. Thank goodness he has a place to stay with family, at least.
-
I was thinking of having a Fish & Kill (cancer) Tourney up at Sonoma maybe we should do a Series of Tourneys.
What if we had some Pink NCKA Stickers printed and sell them for $5 ea
-
Excellent, lets do this!
As for Porky's Paddle..
Im going to make my plan a whole lot easier on others.
Im still doing the paddle, from SC harbor, to the cement ship, to NB and wrap it up at the Capiltola pier. May take all dam day, but I will do it!
Im taking sponsorships already from family and friends.
This is something i need to do, its an emotional thing for me, so its personal at this point, I'd like to give back some of the good will that was given to my family. Im doing this for my old man as much as I am Mooch, he'd be STOKED!
Big Jim, hope I can drag you with me... Well document the whole thing.
What I need:
1. One of Moochs close friends to handle the money and potential sponsors I gather.. Anyone?
2. SPONSORS! Any amount guys.... Its all goes to your friend Mooch in the name of life, show your support!!!!!!!
3. More sponsors, get your friends to pitch in too!
I plan to do this in the next month or so, date to be determined soon.
Help me out here, show some support..
Support life and awareness...

Not trying to take away from the situation but,
Last week I sent a pm to a few key event organizers about a similar situation.
It started about 3 years ago when we received the call that my 2 yr old grandson had been diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer. He was treated at the Oakland Children's Hospital. Unfortunately they didn't have the the knowledge or ability to cure his Cancer and he was taken from us 6 months later.
Since that time I have been working on increasing the popularity of a series of kayak fishing events i have been organizing. My goal is to make these a anticipated event series that will eventually start in San Diego and run up the coast to Northern Washington called "Fishing for a Cure" with all the procedes going to the local Children's Hospital in that area. I have already had great response from a few groups to the south and was going to discuss this with a few groups to the North. Many of our own NCKA members (including Joel) have already received a pm from me asking to discuss an idea I have - well this is it.
Again I don't want to take away from the current situation and was thinking of dedicating the remainder to our brother in need. I have the support of the sponsors and this series has always been to promote the brotherhood of Kayak fisherman. What better way to show this than to see if we can make things a little better for one of our own.
My intent was to talk with some more key players first but the current circumstances have changed my schedule. If anyone with event experience would like more details and poss. join the cause please contact me.
I believe that a few well organized events will do more than a bunch of smaller events. Imagine a series of a dozen or so events similar to GS4 with all the procedes going to help the cause.
Sorry for the thread jack,
Eric
-
Yakhopper, So sorry about your grandson, that hurts, But your idea is just AWESOME man!!
ill support you anyway I can! My mother is heavily involved in this stuff too, she made it her life. What ever you need man, what a great cause!
After loosing your grandson, I'm sure something inside you has driven you to create the "Fishing For a Cure" program, something you need to do... right? And what a great idea!! I know that feeling well.
Like you, as little as my quest is, its something I need to do...
With that said, support the paddle me and Jim are doing with a small donation!
-
I'm all for helping you Porky and Jim... will do,
Yakhopper's already laid plan looks awesome,
and sorry for your loss...
The Power of Sponsors involved makes Things Bigger, and that's what we need...
There to Help anyway I can and will start digging up some (Sponsors) myself....
-
Awesome. Have a good night guys
-
I have antique rods n reels n lures, and lots of other non-fishing collectibles, but I dont know E-bay, any NCKAers who have that aptitude out there? You will probably get lots of stuff from everyone, Ill help with whatever I can, give the proceeds to da Mooch and his Sis. Also, I could bust out some artwork if there's a market, I havnt ever sold a thing yet but I would for da Mooch.
How about a fundraising music event, Eric B.has a pro band, Im in a garage band....
-
I like all of your guys ideas let me know where and how I can help(where do we send $) :smt006
-
Me too, its all in good faith.
For our paddle event, we have no where designated to send $, I was hoping someone who knows Mooch, with a previous paypal history on this site could help out, someone everyone knows and already trusts.
Great to see people wiling to help out and participate in the fight no matter how its done.

Try a paypal donate sticky post too. Some folks may not be able to make it to events but clicking a donate button is easy :)
-
Great idea.
-
Allen,
I will be collecting donations at ARW and the next 2 events I am hosting.
If you are at any of these events I would really appreciate your help with this or If you set up an account I will be glad to forward any donations that way.
Porky,
I will be sure support you.
Send me details as they are avail.
Stay strong brother "Mooch" your family at NCKA will help you through.
-
Same to you yakhopper. And thanks.
-
Paypal is the easy part. :smt002
-Allen
Oops. That graphic link no work. Try this for now while I figure out the technical details.

Dam, your quick. That's just great!
-
What ever we come up with I'm game. I don't think there has been a more communal brother in NCKA than Mooch. Time for the community to support our brother. I agree the more directly the funds go to Joel the better.
-
We can also have an auction at Albion or straight up donations. I am now thinking of changing the money proceeds. To help one of our own might be better than losing it in the whole MLPA BS. Now get those forms in!
-
I was thinking the same thing as Craig. Let's give all proceeds from albion to the mooch life protection account(mlpa).

I really like that Jack . Ireallllllly like that! MLPA for Mooch.

I think all the ideas thrown out are AWESOME and the cool thing is that we will not ALL be able to attend or contribute to ALL of them, but we will all have the option of helping out in whatever way we feel is the best for us...
For me, I think the cool thing about the paddle Porky is going to put on is that we will be able to get donations/support/attention from the non-NCKA local SC community as well...every little bit helps and even if the padle only ends up raising a little bit of money it will still have been worth it!!
I am really looking forward to it...
Here is a rough map I put together that shows the general path of the paddle...may be a little too far offshore in certain spots, but I like the idea of saying that it is an even 9 mile distance!! I 'aint never paddled that far personally so I am looking forward to the challenge as well!!
:smt004
Sincerely,
Jim
-
Also just got an email reminding me that I got suckered into running the Nike Women's Marathon on 10/17/2010!!!
http://inside.nike.com/blogs/nikerunning_events-en_US/2010/03/15/2010-race-weekend-and-registration-information
26.2 miles up and down SF Hills...but, with plenty of good scenery/eye candy out there as well.....20,000 women and ME!! :smt002
Will run this race in Mooch's honor and have no doubt I will be able to raise quite a bit of $$ from my friends and family members...
Bad news is...I gotta start running/training again!! AAAAGGGHH!!! :smt005
Sincerely,
Jim
-
i'm in for EVERYTHING ABOVE,BELOW and STILL IN THOUGHT PROCESS.
I am having a difficult time with this whole situation. For my life will never be complete without the person who taught me how to live the NCKA Style of Life.
Thanks for EVERYTHING, EVERYONE! = now lets get busy doing whatever each of us can to help him.
I was thinking the same thing as Craig. Let's give all proceeds from albion to the mooch life protection account(mlpa).

-
From this point forward,All proceeds from the Albion Open will be put in the new MLPA for Mooch. I have yet to recieve all the registration forms in yet. Please do this soon if you are coming to the event. lookm at the list and double check to see if your names on it. If you cant come to Albion and want to make your donation for the event proceeds. Fill out a form and send a check. A list of all contributors will be announced at the potluck Saturday night. We will have an auction Saturday night also. After the awards. Bring what you can and lots of dough for the auction. If anyone wants to talk further about this Pm me or call 707-765-9902 Myself and Jack will need help doing the auction. Thanks, Craig. I will talk to DaveW about this as the proceeds were going to go to help offset costs for MLPA activities. This is more important.

Now I know who of you are collapsing the left side column. I'm going to have to figure out how to disable that feature. At the right side of the top menu, if you see a '+' sign, click it and the left side column will then be displayed.

Well I think we are in our 8th year of the Steve Moyer Memorial kayak fishing tournament, with the proceeds going to The American Cancer Society and a portion each year going to a kayaker in need. I will be happy once again to give a portion of our proceeds to help another one of our own in his time of need. But damn, I am tired of having to help kayak fisherman with cancer so please just stop it, NOW.
Love you Mooch wish you all the best brother.
-
I just spoke to Mooch. He is completely overwhelmed by the generosity of this group. You guys rock. Speaking of rocking, DaveW has re-gifted the $950 MLPA fund we gave him earlier to go towards this cause. How fucking cool is that? The total is currently sitting at $2490. Keep it coming guys!!!

had a follow up check up last Friday and the encologist clinic did a blood test and they did not like what they saw (blood clots) and I was immediately sent to the ER for a CT scan. They ended keeping me till Monday because they diagnosed me with Pulmonary Embolism as well. I was kept on observation along with the treatment of Zolpidem (for sleep aid) Hydrocodone (pain killer) Coumadin (pill form blood thinner) and daily shots of arixtra (blood thinner - injection). They sent me home Monday before noon with instructions to keep taking the said drugs until my next appointment.
When I left Monday, I had to stop by Mills Hospital for a PET Scan....still waiting for the results for that. Have another appointment this Thursday at San Mateo Med. They will have the PET scan results by then and hopefully they will have a treatment plan for me.
-
Keep up the good fight Mooch! Wishing you the best!
Dave W - way cool my friend!

They will have the PET scan results by then and hopefully they will have a treatment plan for me.
Great news!

Pete donated $515? Whatta guy!!!
Just so it's clear, I didn't donate $515. I did notice however that after I donated the total didn't update, and knowing just how generous this NCKA family is I was sure the total was much higher than the $500 listed at the time. Hence my question. Waking up this morning to see the new total of $3000 proved me right, and I'd be shocked if the actual number isn't even higher than that. I am proud to be affiliated with a group of people such as this.
Group hug!

You are the king good sir. :notworthy: I'm in For any Thing PRO-MOOCH, Even if that means more cabana boy detail, Or taking a barage of airsoft bullets(Don't Put that F*c&ing Thing at Me) :smt066 WE love ya Mooch wish you the best.

I know many of you have probably seen this, still, here is a reminder why we care about Joel. He drives people bananas and can be pig headed sometimes, but he's our Bro.

We need "mooch-strong" bracelets! With NCKA logo. Polepole, what can we do to get this cranked up?

Step 1. Find someone with more artistic ability than me. :smt002

-
Theres a ton of places online to get these...
http://www.wristbandconnection.com/
Not sure about locally...
-
Guys, i want to let ya know that I have the means to make 1" buttons/pins or 1" fridge magnets.....
Like the old school rock buttons.. Of course these would be like the bracelets with a ant cancer message or something of that sort...
Ill make something up and post a link selling them.. Ill do the work, all profits can be added to the pot..
If theres any interest lemme know..
see below if your not sure what a button is...
-
I was sort of half joking. I've actually ordered wristbands for a similar cause before. It's not too difficult.
Just tell me what you guys want written on them and what color you want. Custom artwork is usually a pain so I'd suggest foregoing the NCKA logo. There is usually some pre-canned artwork (like a kayak pic/logo or something similar) to choose from. I can order up a bunch, and then sell them at the various events.
-Allen
-
I'm in for a button and mooch strong bracelet
-FF
-
Cool, ill get buttons packs going
-
I am in for both too. I would suggest a banana on the bracelet in honor of the prangster we all love, Mooch. We can sell them at functions, and it will help provide a stream of revenue for Joel after the initial contributions dry up. Buttons and wrist bands are a hell of an idea.
-
'Mooch Strong"
Purple or Pink
no additional logo-- that's too cheesy
-
I just sent an email to Mooch asking what his favorite color is.
-Allen
-

Yeah, we can also get the manvan in the same color scheme. Only a few more dollars to go!

Just incase its been over looked..

Heres the 1" Buttons.
3 for $6
$1 goes back to the buttons to afford to make more.
$5 goes to Mooch.
They will be packaged.
Just a peak for interest purposes.
White button is a Andy Wharhol spoof... And what I read about this topic from Moochs friends.
Yellow button is a clip from Moochs signature on NCKA
Blue button is the event.
Wife is gonna mass produce them, prolly need some people to sling them.
-
Porky, what do you do for a living? Those are so cool.
-
Thx, I design products for a MX and clothing company. Action sports deal, we design for younger crowd. Beanies, hats, backpacks, belts, wallets stuff like that.
Got the button and screen printing stuff going on the side when there's time.
-
Mooch is a great guy, He sold me my Kayak and was really helpful getting me started. I don't know what the nature of his illness is, but I donated last night. I'll be praying for a quick recovery.
-
I never had the privilege to meet MOOCH, but was more than glad to kick in what we could, I fish mostly lakes and rivers so more than likely will meet few of you in person, saying that, I really enjoy the site and get alot of information from you all.
Hang in there MOOCH, from what I have read about you, your well loved in this community of the Kayak brotherhood.

Finally got results from my Biopsy (after almost a month of being told I was diagnosed with 4th stage cancer)....but unfortunately it wasn't what I wanted to hear. Apparently the cancer is still a mystery BUT doc said it's more likely lung Cancer. The good news is that it's an answer better than none at all and that my first chemo treatment will be done this Thursday.
Wednesday, I'm also scheduled for an appointment for Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. They are going through all possible scenarios and checking off as they go.
This is all I know for now. Thanks again for all the well wishes and the continued support!
-
Hang in there Mooch! All the positive waves we're all sending have got to help. Don't make me come back there and sick Theresa on you!

Be strong brother man!

Do we have a connectoion at Mel Cottons?
Maybe the peeps working there can ask and if so I'd be happy to print some and drop them off.
Sorry if this is an old idea....just thinking out loud.

I will print and post in the Fresno F.W. and pass it along to all the other stores to post as well

...just had my first bout with chemo (the 24th) and it's been a day by day challenge. Sat in a room filled with other chemo patients and being the first timer on the group, I got to sit in there for almost 8 hours with two drip bags and a tube attached to my knuckle. Got out the same day but didn't feel the wrath (after effects) till the day after. How does it feel? My best description would be like your life was sucked out of you. Energy, appetite and sex drive :white all shot to hell. But that's the price you have to pay for the healing process. Once again, thank you all for the ongoing support and well wishes. It's really hard to imagine going through this ordeal without my NCKA family. You folks are the shnizzel :smt008

-
Joel,
Keep your head up. I have never been in your shoes, but my family has had some rough times with cancer. My mother is a breast cancer survivor. I don't think I can imagine how you feel. I think that only those faced with it can truly know what you are going through.
Stay positive and get through this.

Yes sir, my second bout with chemo was yesterday....it only took 4 hours instead of the 8 hour day on my first treatment. My ipod and my mac book movie kept me busy as I was better prepared this time. Had a russian nurse take care of me...she looked like the Ivan Drago type "I must inject you"....but she ended up being a sweetheart. The mooch charm and gift of gab got her knees weak :smt002 Works everytime fellas :smt045
So far, I'm not feeling the side effects but I know I'll get it bad in the next 4 to 5 days then it will slowly subside on the following weeks. Two chemo session done - 4 more to go!
The good news is that I'm maintaining my sexy 230 lbs frame which is quite surprising despite the fact that I have not really been eating as much as I used to BUT I'm pretty good with drinking a lot of freshly squeezed fruit smoothies through out the day. Been eating really healthy....think my body is going through some serious shock and awe :smt003
Thanks again for the well wishes!
Peace out!

Joel glad to see you feeling spirited but I was sorta wondering what about the hair on you Hobbit feet???
....while I was a chemo, I had a roomate, also a cancer patient that noticed that I still had hair in my arms...and he was curious about the fact that I STILL had hair on me. I told him that I was only on my second dose of chemo. Apparently he was already on his 6th chemo and he didn't even have eye brows. Later on, I found out that he was also a Filipino (late 20's), lung cancer, 4th stage and just came back from Alaska. He was working on the fish canary and was breathing in too much ammonia from the fish cleaning station. Nice fella. Hope he wins the fight!
I'll take pics of my hobbit feet and you can decide if I still have Hobbit credentials :smt002

just another update...my 3rd chemo session was cancelled today because I had a slight cold. They didn't want to take the risk. (getting sick while on chemo is a no-no because my immune system is at an all time low).
So they will reschedule for next Thursday instead barring any other disease I pick up......gotta do my best to stay away from Agarcia :smt002

Rest up buddy! Eat/drink healthy!! Hope you shake the cold soon!

So whats the latest on the van? :smt004
talked to him today....he's in the process of customizing it and won't drive it till he's done. So far he's welded some sheet metal over the rear windows and is working on getting the paint right. He couldn't estimate a completion date though, apparently scratching Free Candy into automotive paint with your fingernails is not an easy task, he is persistent though so expect to see it soon.

Thanks for all the continued support and the well wishes :smt008 The nurses at the infusion center have all commented on my positive and upbeat attitude though out the chemo process. I just simply tell 'em that my family is no stranger to cancer and that I have THE BEST support group ever = NCKA.ORG :smt045
Today, my infusion started at 9AM and ended at 7PM...it was a long day. A couple hours were added to the process - another blood test before chemo treatment and another hour added to the additional treatment of Zometa to treat the cancer that was found in my bones. Yet I found the energy to "represent" the HAC gang sign....it's my way of showing support to my fellow HAC who's also currently going through chemo too = Marv "Shicken"....stay strong my fellow "Hella Asian Crew" member...

When you head up to Tahoe you will have to stop by the newly upgraded and completed bar called 'The Cedar Room' , formerly known as the Tiki Bar.
Great food and drinks. All on the house too.
-
This dedicated to you and Marv. "Invictus" by the English poet William Ernest Hensley.
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
Thanks for all the continued support and the well wishes :smt008 The nurses at the infusion center have all commented on my positive and upbeat attitude though out the chemo process. Just got back a few hours ago from my 6th chemo - the last one - I'm hoping. It was another long day - (9AM to 7:PM). Got a follow up appointment this Friday the 10th for the prognosis. The wait is stressfull but I'm staying positive.
One think I've learned from this chemo experience is that normality is severely under rated.
Be thankful for family / friends, being (staying) healthy, for holding down a job, and having a roof over your head.

-
Mooch,
Praying 2011 will be your year of recovery and you will win AOTY. Thinking of you brother.
-
Joel
Karen, Molly and I wish you the best. As mentioned before, cancer is a journey. I think you are looking pretty good for over 6 months into the battle so I believe you are going to win. Chemo really sucks but it is killing the cancer faster than it is killing you so try to look at it as a net positive. At least that helped Karen get through it.
Scott
-
Joel,
Positive thoughts, prayers and energy for you from here, too. As an aside that may help with the last news-a colleague who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer was not responsive to two different Chemo blends and infusion regimens...the third version they administered did the job in reducing the tumor sufficiently to operate and get it all out despite the previously advanced stage. Hang in there, Mooch, we're all pulling for ya!
-
Mooch my brother, I love you. If that f...in cancer ain't gone by valentines day,.. i'm packin up my filet knife and a bottle of stoli and i'm coming down there to take it out myself.
hugs and kisses.....jack

Just wanted to give a shout out to the nursing staff of San Mateo Med / Infusion Center for their never ending genuine care and hospitality. These good folks have been treating me and many other cancer patients very well and always go that extra mile. If you ever come across a nurse, shake their hand, pat 'em on the back and thank them for what they do. They simply don't get enough credit for what they do EVERYDAY! They deserve a lot more than just a paycheck.
*I've heard many say that in the Health care business...some employees are advised not to get too involved with their patients - to protect themselves from the pain and guilt of maybe losing a patient friend. Well, all I can say that these individuals treat me (and others) like an extended family member (just like NCKA) and there's no better feeling than that. It's simply PRICELESS.
:salut: :salut: :salut: :salut: :salut: :salut: :salut:

Joel, thanks for sharing the view from your perspective. It's a relief to see you are in the care of good people.

just an FYI, my hydration is no longer a problem. Right now, my Magnesium level is low. So basically that's what I'm currently working on. Daily recommended daily dose of magnesium for:
* Adult male: 400 milligrams
* adult female: 300 milligrams
* pregnant woman: 300 to 400 milligrams
* children between ages of 3 to 12: 80 to 250 milligrams
* children between ages 13 to 18: 300 to 400 milligrams
*** more info on foods high in Magnesium: (my nurse took the time to look this up on the internet while I was in chemo session and gave me a hard copy....going above in beyond :salut:)
http://www.tandurast.com/minerals/foods-high-in-magnesium.html (http://www.tandurust.com/minerals/foods-high-in-magnesium.html)
*the problem with some of the listed foods rich in magnesium are not good for my Pulmonary Embolism (like spinach and broccoli or anything that is rich in vitamin K) and also with my gout (like oysters and scallop). So I'm constantly on the look out for what i eat an drink to sustain my self preservation.
- just thought I'd pass on what I've learned/experienced so far....cause I care about this community :smt008
My advise: put a lot more stock into your health.....without good health, you'd be stuck on the sidelines with me, wishing you had :smt045
-
It takes a special person to do that kind of work, and my hats off to all of them :smt002 I've donated money to Hospice care facilities after they took such great care of my Mom when she was ill.
Glad to hear they are taking great care of you there!! :smt001 We should go catch them some fish to repay their hospitality :smt044

Mooch, that doctor looks like Obama's little brother!

-
Hello Mooch. I just spent 5 days at the hospital with my 4 month old. It's not a good feeling when the doctor tells you to take her to emergency. The hospital people really do a good job, and they made me feel better. You are right, I really appreciate them.
BTW,the real reason I decided to post is because that hottie in the purple you had your arm around did not have a wedding ring on. Keep it up Joel, we all know lots of survivors.
-
Joel, Had to be admitted into the Hospital this morning. Got a call from Rachael and Joel has had to have a blood transfusion of 5 units. He also has phnemonia
will keep you guys updated. Frank

Thanks for the update Frank. Glad to hear Mooch is feeling better. Hey bro, you need to stay away from that taba nang talangka( crab fat ). That's not good for
you and the coca cola too while you are at it. I was watching you like a hawk but
I did not want to ruin your fun from O'Neill Forebay.
Jedmo
-
come on brudah, keep casting that hook! WE all need you.
-
Is there anything we can do to help ie blood donations does he have an acct to donate to?
I asked about that, but apparently they have a good supply.
Frustrating not being able to do anything. He even said he doesn't want visitors. But maybe we should go anyway?
-
Keeping tabs....we're all here for you Brudah Mooch.
Pneumonia is no fun, & quite scary no matter who you are. BTDT twice. Seems like it hits the hardiest folks the hardest.
BTW-you are "mentioned" in this months issue of Canoe & Kayak magazine.
nothin but love to you Hana Pa'a!
-
Frustrating not being able to do anything. He even said he doesn't want visitors. But maybe we should go anyway?
If you were accompanied by a "naughty" nurse as a visiting present, believe me, he'd want to see you, er, her. I'd lay down $20 to see that happen. Who's with me? :smt002
Hang in there Moochie.
-
Glad to hear he is doing better pneumonia is tough for anyone. Hang in there Joel, keep on fighting.

+1 more, prayers as well
-
The surgery was successful, and they gave him another blood transfusion due to low oxygen count.
Al, they were patching a hole that was the cause of the fluid in his lungs, from what I understand.
-
thanks for the updates Frank & Eric.
Most of us would be lost on his condition without your help.
-
Pulling for you big time Mooch.Get well soon.
-
Well, I just got back from the Hospital and the Boy is talking shit :smt004. He looks good but still he'll be in there for a few more days.
They are still draining him and giving him blood. He does have control of the "Happy Juice" which he can use when he is uncomfortable. He said he only had to hit it once so far. Amazing I would have been on my second refill by now.
If you want to do something for Joel don't forget about ,"MLPA". :thefinger: and that's for the look you just gave Joel.........
Love Ya NCKA, Frank
-
I think the "Mooch Life Protection Act" needs a kick in the pants. I am suggesting that we start some kind of a hat passing at any/all Hookups.
The HOOKUP HAT. I know Joel will not say anything but I know his piggy bank is bone dry. I know times are tough for a lot of us and it does not need to be that much. There is power in numbers and we have the numbers. I am a little blessed right now so I will donate as soon as I post this. Remember WWMD.
Randall
-
Frank, I cant thank you enough for keeping us informed on Joel's condition. Means a lot... Thank you.
I think the "Mooch Life Protection Act" needs a kick in the pants.

Well wishes Joel! Keep on truckin!

Joel is recuperating from his surgery and is feeling it as of last night. They have him walking in the morning and night.
I know a lot of you want to go and see him but please understand that he needs his rest and a constant flow of us will not help his rehabilitation. They have extended his stay for up to another week. Keep him in your thoughts. Frank
-
Stand tall and walk strong brother Mooch! Sending you positive vibes from the NW. And thank you Frank for being there for him and giving us updates.

Thanks for the ongoing reports/updates Frank and Eric. I understand about it not being best for Joel to have us all traipsing through, it's difficult enough to get ANY rest in a hospital.
Frank, if you have mailing address information for Joel at the hospital, since he may be in for another week, we could mail some goofy greeting cards for his entertainment......I think he might enjoy that.

John
It was definitely hard to get a good nights sleep -
here's how my week went:
Saturday (Jan 22) morning around 1 AM, I get out off bed to get a drink. That's when the shit hit the fan. My breathing just want shallow and I struggled to get the next breath in. My niece was still awake at the time and I had her wake up her mom to get me to the hospital. Sister decided to call 911 which was a good call cause I would have never made it to the car. Paramedics were at the door with in 10 minutes. They quickly gave me oxygen which calmed me down in a matter of seconds. They got me to the hospital and was told I was running a high fever and later on, the ER staff told me I was anemic (3 times below normal) so they got ready for a blood transfusion. I was O+ and they had plenty in stock for me. I ended up with 5 units of blood. On on top of all this, I also had a large amount of fluid build up around my right lung. They ended up extracting 3 liters as I lay on my side, wide awake for about an hour during this particular procedure. When that was all said and done and did another operation (this time, they put me to sleep), they put 3 holes just below my armpit and did a "video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. "No gross tumor but clearly abnormal appearing pleura". "The lung had a clot on the surface of it and it was removed".
They then left a tube in me for another 4 days to drain any extra fluids. So I basically looked and felt like Neo (Matrix) for the entire week. I'm glad I'm finally unplugged :smt002
...appreciate and enjoy every breath you take.
-
Sweet Jesus! What an ordeal you went thru. I'm glad you made it Mooch and hope that the worst is over now. They say it's easier to be tough than strong but it seems God made you both tough & strong and I'm thankful for that. jim

Thanks Jim. It's hard to be afraid or even feel weak when you know you have an NCKA Army backing you up. I could only wish this kind of support group to others that are not so lucky as I'am.
-
Thank God your sister called 911.Smart lady.Get well soon.My wife says hello and God bless.Hope to see you soon.
-
Thanks for sharing the story & info, Joel. It is great that they were able to do their work through small incisions and video assisted rather than have to split you completely open.
Sheesh, with that drain in, an IV, probably oxygen at the nose and the oxygen saturation sensor and maybe even more, it must have been impossible to scratch an eyebrow without setting off alarms, or feeling like a fly caught in a spider's web! And oh, by the way, they want you to get out of bed and walk the ward with those contraptions. I hope they gave you some pajamas so you didn't have to parade around in those back- open gowns!!!
Sooo glad you're able to be out. You are one tough 'yakker. Rest well.
-
oh my!..............brudah, i would say be strong&tuff, but you already are, so i'll say, "I'm glad you are feeling better". :smt008

The token white guy you are referring to is Bill aka "Papa Bill". I haven't seen him in a while either and almost did not recognize him (he's slimmed down quite a bit) Apparently, he's now part of another online community called "Old Geezers that still skateboard at NorCal dot com" :white

Just another update. As of last week, I'm no longer seeing my oncologist (or doing any other type of treatments) at San Mateo County Hospital. After my last ER trip, operation and week long stay at Seton Hospital in Daly City, I was instantly convinced that the doctor's who took care of me (including an oncologist that made several visits with me while I was there) were more on their game. I'm spending this week doing everything all over again. My new oncologist spent an hour explaining the possibility of me not needing chemotherapy anymore and that a pill would do a better job. Of course, this is not written in stone yet but I'm hoping his findings will take me to a better path of healing. Chemo is simply the last course of action and I believe my former oncologist simply jumped the gun and figured (lack of research and tests) out the chemo was only way to go :smt011 Anyway, like I had mentioned earlier, I'll be starting all over again. I already did several blood tests for the prevention of blood clots and other cancer related tests. Had a half hour infusion of zometa (to strengthen my bones) which I will be doing on a monthly basis. I'll also be scheduled for another biopsy which I'm not looking forward to but it's something that needs to be done to further assist my future cancer treatment plans.
Once again, I'd like to thank NCKA for the support and the donations that have kept me afloat all this time. I look forward to getting past this hump and starting normality once again :smt002
-
drugs that came with my chemo treatment.....I'm hoping my new Oncologist will be able to nail it down to one.
-
also hoping to minimize the shots I have to take on a weekly and monthly basis....did I tell you that I'm the biggest panzeee when it comes to being poked by a needle :smt011
-
Ana and I are keeping you in our daily thoughts and prayers bro....
Hope the new course of treatment is less painful and more effective!!
:smt006
Sincerely,

did I tell you that I'm the biggest panzeee when it comes to being poked by a needle :smt011
I'm on the same page with you there....I sincerely hope that your new Medical Oncologist gets the regimen narrowed down and well targeted for you.

Glad to hear that things are looking up, Joel. Still keeping you in my thoughts tho! :smt001

Al, that's exactly how I feel after a chemo session = getting beat up :smt045
The dude doing the beating reminds me of Fishmaster 1 / Andy :smt002
-
Dang that's a pharmacy in that pic.
Its really tough to lose confidence in your care team. BUT, if you feel better with the folks at Seton, that is what counts-YOU feeling BETTER
I think I saw a halibut swim by the mile buoy last week that had "Lotilla" written on its back
-
Glad to hear you're holding the reins of your treatment. I have a nephew going through much the same thing. It was amazing to hear how differently two different cancer clinics were going to treat the same illness.
Take good care, Joel.

Wow Joel....
Sounds Good, I never like the look of " Several Meds... "
I see it all the time in the field... A friggen grocery bag full of different meds...
" You don't take all of these everyday do you...? "
:smt045 " Yes Sir...! "
" Jesus... How many of them are just for your stomach...? "
not trying to thread jack... I know western meds have their place, but I wonder if the Dr. is just feeding the machine that makes these meds and where the actual needs of the pt. are met...
It's a good sign that this new Dr. is taking the " Time... " with you and having confidence in your healing practitioner as well as your course of treatment, is just as important as the Tx itself.
Keep Good thoughts, Stay Positive...
And FIGHT!!!!! :smt062
Sending Power Vibes to ya now!!! :smt048

Hang tough bro.
My wife was an onc nurse for 20 years. Nothin' pissed her off more than the a doc who always brought out the big guns without knowing what he was shooting at. Sounds like the new doc is doing the right thing.

Damn Brother, that was a hell of a lot of pills to take! Hopefully this new guy has his act together. Always sending you the Mojo Bra!

man, he didn't even give you one fun one..........I'd switch Docs for sure. Keep fighting, Mooch.
-
just an update. About a few weeks ago, I had my 3rd Biopsy (this time I was put to sleep - thank God) done and was later told that I have breast cancer. How the hell the the first oncologist came up with lung cancer is beyond me and I was not happy about it. I'm just glad I got a second opinion and I trruly feel that i'm in betternhands right now. I have a mammogram scheduled for tomorrow and will continue my zometa infusion treatments every month. I'm now taking Tamoxifen , folic acid and warfarin for my treatments and will also blood transfusions when needed (so far I have had 6 pints in total so far). Will posssibly have radiation treatments after the mammogram. The tamoxifen has been hard on my body and I'm hoping it's something I can get used to it. And me being anemic keeps me form doing a lot of stuff - theshortness of breath really puts a damper on things. I'm trying to get my ass in the pool (my sisters complex has an indoor heater pool) to get into some sort of shape but it's tought just trying to the pool itself cause it's about four flight of stairs to get to. anyway, this is what's it's all about right now. Still fighting the fight!
-

Just got back from the Stanford Cancer Research Hospital for a third opinion. The good news is that my oncologist from Seton Hospital and the Oncologist from Stanford see eye to eye. Initially, there was some doubt regarding the diagnosis of breast cancer because the mammogram and the the MRI test were negative but further studies were made and they have concluded that it is metastatic breast cancer. Both doctors agree that I'm taking the right meds as of now BUT one particular drug (Tamoxifen) needs more time / more doses for it to show that it's really working. I'm crossing my fingers that it will help my issues with being anemic. Stanford seems to think that my earlier chemo treatments cause some sort of side effects to my bone marrow thus causing low blood production.
Unfortunately for me, my cancer is at stage 4 and Male Breast Cancer is rare and the treatments are still not up to par compared to Women's Breast Cancer. I've been told that I'll be on constant medication for the rest of my life. The challenge will be dealing with the side effects of each drug that I have to take. And if the meds don't seem to work in the long run, there are other experimental drugs that are available. There is no cure for me right now but I know studies are being made.
Once again, I want to thank NCKA for the continued support.
LIVE LIFE!
Joel / Mooch
-
Thank you for the update Mooch. Hope you don't have too many side effects or any serious ones. We're praying for you and you always can count on our supports.

Anything I can do (except for my sling back chair), just let me know.

Mooch occupies Seton Hospital :camp
Eversince the crab opener, I started to have some issues with the vision of my left eye. For a couple of days I simply thought its was stress or just simply some bug that decided to occupy my eye :smt009 Anyhow, the eye started to loose a little bit of vision and got really light sensitive. Saw my Primary care doc asap to make an appointment with a specialist but unfortunately, the earliest appointment I got was for Dec. 8. :smt011 Day after Thanksgiving (Friday), woke up and my eye had no vision or feeling at all. Headed straight to the ER at Seton that morning. ER crew sends me to a CAT scan and then an MRI. The MRI showed cancer tumors is affecting the optic nerve of the left eye causing blindness and that radiation treatment is needed asap. So they decided to keep me till Tuesday night. Within the stay, I was given 5 rad. treatments and was under observation. More rad treatments coming up (daily) but very relieved that I got to get home last night and get some proper rest. Still no changed on the condition of my left eye - just hoping get that vision back some day. Good news is that I happen to carry a spare eye :smt002 ....oh, and I now have access to rockstar parking :smt045
I apologize for not responding to phone calls, emails and PM's. The internet in the Hospital aint the best. Still also trying to catch up some sleep time. Anyway, this is all I got for now - Happy Holidays to all!

"Fish on!" Mooch says it in a way that draws you in and lets you share the moment. Already heading that direction, I give another brisk stroke of the paddle before quickly stowing that tool on my lap and turning to another one that's almost as familiar - the camera. I switch on the video and adjust the angle to capture the action as I glide in boatside. My frantic motions to get the tripod situated as quickly as I can are juxtaposed beautifully with Joel's ease as he leans back in the seat, raises his rod above him, and realizes the full joy and passion of a hookup with a wild King Salmon. Arms raised high, rod perfectly bowed, and reel smoothly peeling out line, he's in his element, and his smile says it all. By this time I've got a second lens out, just for the facial close-up. This is what it is all about. This is where we find what we need and we share what we love.
Thank you, Brother, for being the Man that you are.
:smt001

That's a good looking team ya got there Mooch! Been thinking bout you everyday so thanks for the post. Jim

Mon to Fri radiation treatments still on going. Appetite is at an all time high :smt011 Radiation wiped out my hair but I kinda like the "TOP GONE" look :smt002

Have you been moonlighting as a reality show pawn shop owner who knows everything about everything and will pay you about 25% of the actual value of the item you want to pawn?

Well, here's the latest...
Really tired so I'll keep it short. Got done with radiation treatments with my left eye. The bad news is that there were several side effects after the treatments which sent me to the ER again. Spent an unexpected 4 nights at the hospital and just got released tonight with a butt load of other meds :smt011. The good news is that my left eye is slowly gaining some vision. It still feels like a lazy eye, light sensitive and still cant focus. Not out of the woods yet - more tests will be needed. That's all I have for now. Again, thank you all for the support and well wishes.
Much Love,
Joel / Mooch

My Oncologist at Stanford says the cancer is still progressing and my new (3rd experimental treatment plan) chemo may or may not help slow down it down. Still too early to tell.
Sincerely,
Jim
i dont know if i can participate due to very young kids but i am willing to donate to a good cause :smt006 if this happens and any one coming by this way can pickup the money heading over there
-
Eh Joel, our little family here is always thinking of ya man. My buddy Wayne who you met at Albion 2010, he beat chronic cancer with a attitude like yours. He swears by carrot juice everyday, a few times a day, does not hurt to try. Eat and drink healthy he says.
He always asks about you, if you ever need a good person to talk with, who has been through cancer hell and survived, Wayne is the guy. He would be happy to talk, he is a great guy and a great friend. He is considered a living miracle by his doctors. He is very inspirational, as are you.

Since I am still on the DL list, I decide to get Joel a call and see if he want to go hang at his ole stomping grounds HMB.
We hooked up at 11am at the harbor with pups in tow; and made our way around the harbor. WOW did it change... not as jumping as the last time I was there...
anyways, we hit up Princeton By the Sea for some chowder and fried calamari; and dined at HMB kayak... Afterwards we took the pups down to Montara to stretch there legs, chasing each other around and fetching the plank wood... boy did they have a great time! Gizmo was so tired, he's been sleeping since we got home....
I was GREAT to hang with Joel (and Kylo) again! He looks in better condition than me!
here are a few pics:
-
Thanks for the call Glen. I really needed to get out of the house. It was a great day to be out with a good buddy and of course getting Kylo out to play with Gizmo. Thanks for lunch and I really think we should get a dog n' Chill event at Montara Beach one of these weekends!
