Fish Talk / Lifecycle of the Cali Hali?
« on: April 22, 2020, 03:57:25 PM »
Hey, this is kind of funny:  Last week, the only Hali I caught at ARW was all of about 9” long and TLA recently caught one that fit in the palm of his hand. This got me thinking (it’s that time of year when I think, whether it’s needed or not [emoji23]) about the ages of those 2 small fries.

Can anyone fill us in on the Cali Hali lifecycle? Because the suckers were so small, it seems very unlikely that they hatched anywhere other than right near ARW. In the Bay, what’s their spawning pattern and early life like?

thanks in advance,  Bradley

General Talk / ARW Encinal Boat Ramp: CLOSED 4/22/2020
« on: April 22, 2020, 03:41:38 PM »
Well, sad news: the new and nicely done City of Alameda Encinal Boat Ramp is closed effective this afternoon, as per the City’s official website.

I stopped by after my nearby Food Bank volunteer shift in order to check up my local spot, and was just in time to see 2 city workers bolting up a brand new “No Trespassing” sign on the gates.  They offered no info, so I checked the website and learned the news. On my way back to the ramp, the entire parking lot was filled and there were cars parked well along the driveway, with many PB’s out on the water, a decent crop of yakkers, and a good number of wall fishermen.

While I was there, most people seemed to be observing the social distancing guidelines, but the PB’s are going to be questionable, as is the wall.  This is quite a bummer, as Hali season seems to be improving.

Hey gang, I learned of this from my buddy Nick.  Please see the link below, RE an emergency CDFW meeting that is discussing the potential shutdown of the sport fishing season due to Covid-19 concerns.

Most of us certainly have the time to participate in this virtual meeting:

When:            Thursday, April 9, 2020 at 8:30 a.m.

Where:          Via teleconference and webinar. Members of the public will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed emergency regulation by calling (877) 402-9753 or (636) 651-3141; access code 832 4310. Webinar details are on the agenda.

More:             The meeting agenda and documents are available on the Commission’s website at https://fgc.ca.gov/Meetings/2020

Personally, this is kind of baffling to me, because almost as a rule, fisherman may be friendly and social creatures, but we are not keen on being within 3 or 4 yards of anyone, other than our kids, when we’re fishing.  If we understand that we MUST maintain social distancing or the season could be forfeited, then it seems like a bad idea to remove a means of putting food on the table, which thereby takes pressure off of other food supply chains.

So here’s the larger point, we are a very large organization and there is no time like now to express our views with the authorities who are considering changes to how we recreate and feed ourselves.  Please participate in the call-in.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Super Drysuit, decent price
« on: September 06, 2019, 09:08:33 AM »
Hey gang, here’s a link to a super/top-of-the-line drysuit for a decent price. I didn’t say that it’s cheap, $740 (the price should adjust down when their broken currency converter is fixed because I think they charge the EU’s VAT tax that gets credited to US buyers) is a chunk of change, but comparatively speaking, it is a very decent deal. That said, I still feel the GUL TAW is the right choice.

Here’s the link:  https://www.coastwatersports.co.uk/typhoon-ps330-xtreme-drysuit-2019-undersuit-p-9633.html?utm_campaign=150_off_the_typhoon_ps330_xtreme_drysuit_2019_undersuit&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_term=20190906
This vender is in the UK, so there’s no tax, and the shipping is fast and very cheap.

Safety First / Sunday NCKA rescue at Rockaway
« on: August 26, 2019, 06:50:58 PM »
At risk of upsetting a member (Shake, sorry bro), I'm going to post this anyway because it is a good story all the way around and there were many members in the vicinity who probably want an update.  This is why we all wear immersion gear, PFD's, and carry functioning radios.

(Shake's kayak had a catastrophic failure yesterday)

Hi All,
I wanted to say thank you again for your help today. I hope you all got fish. I honestly don't know what I would have done without you guys being on your radios and coming to help me out. That kayak is officially retired. And there was one other person in a newer green hobie, if anyone has his info, I'd like to say thanks to him as well. I owe you all a round of beers and more.

Thanks again,

Shake

Hey Shake,

I can safely say that we are all happy to help out, and for sure are thrilled that things turned out as well as they did -- both you and ALL of your gear made it safely back to shore.  That's what the community of the Forum is all about, why it was formed so long ago; we share the good times and help each other through the bad times.  If the weather had been even a little bit worse, things would NOT have turned out so well for your gear, you got lucky.

There were 2 amazing things to me about the experience:  A)  I watched those Malibu Brothers get to you incredibly FAST on their tandem; my Revo-16 is impressively fast, but they were moving across the water like a powerboat and then they got you in to the beach on their trampoline -- BRAVO Andrew and Bro!!  B) I also watched and cruised past a number of other yakkers, who were much closer to you than those of us who helped (and others who were indeed quite far away too), do absolutely nothing to help a man in true need of assistance.  That is not what the Rules of the Sea are about and not what our great NCKA is about -- we are a community that is committed to each other, the health of our waters, and the sport we all love; that not responding business was a huge disappointment for me and I hope it's because those guys are not members in the NCKA community.

That green Hobie yakker is Umichi, he helped you in the water and helped us get your boat in.  I've been fishing and spending time with both Krishna and Umichi for a couple of years now, and can say that they are my friends and I value our time together; now I suspect you appreciate them too, they are great guys, as are Andrew and his Bro -- NCKA Strong!

We are all happy to hear that you are retiring your ancient Outback, it has had a long, hard life, LOL.

Tight lines,
Bradley

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Fishfinder: Lowrance Hook vs. ?
« on: August 07, 2019, 03:32:01 PM »
Uhhg, my Lowrance Hook 4 has taken a crap on me, so I need to replace it.  I'm driving a Hobie Revo-16, so the Lowrance line is attractive due to the built in transducer pocket.  That said, I am willing to consider other options.

Lowrance is offering me a discounted Hook-4($130) or Hook-5 ($143) (includes tax and shipping).  The good news with this "discounted" "offer" is that my Navionics chip is compatible and so are my currently installed transducers, so this is a pretty straight-forward effort.  Browsing Amazon, it looks like there are better deals, but it all boils down to the specifics of the units up for sale.  They will also give me a discount on a more modern Hook2 series unit, but in either case, the reviews aren't that great for either the Hook series and worse for the Hook2 series.

That leaves open the door to consider other makes, but then I land right in the middle of the transducer mount thing, and that doesn't seem good.  Can anyone share their impressions of different brands of fish finders, their mounting, and performance?

TIA,
Bradley

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Excellent dry suits at great price
« on: May 24, 2019, 09:15:58 AM »
WooHoo!  Here’s a link to the same dry suit that I have and like very, very much. At $600 for a breathable, full drysuit, with hood, this is hard to beat:  https://www.coastwatersports.com/gul-taw-kayak-drysuit-2019-orange-canoeing-kayaking-p-14417.html

Btw, it is very heavy duty, has pee-zip and fabric feet (better than latex), and comes in a women’s version too.  Oh yeah, there’s free shipping.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Big Hobie beach wheel cart
« on: May 21, 2019, 04:12:38 PM »
Can anyone tell me the diameter and length of the axle section that the wheels bear on?  Also it looks like the old Wheeleez pin setup is a goner, so a pict of how the wheels get locked on would be helpful.

General Talk / Throw net mesh sizing?

Hey Gang, is a 1/4" mesh too small for decent anchovies and other Ling, salmon, and Hali bait?

General Talk / How to include photos?
« on: December 31, 2017, 02:26:43 PM »
Okay, I just tried to include some jpg's from yesterday's Pigeon Pt. fishing fiesta in a posting, but they wouldn't go.  I put the images on my desktop, and then used the "insert image" button to create the landing spot for each image.  I copied & pasted each image between the bracket expressions, and the result is that darned blue-boxed "?"

Can someone please guide me on this?  Must I only use hosted images?

TIA, Bradley

For Sale / Yakima Dry Dock
« on: December 20, 2017, 03:37:55 PM »
New, unused, assembled, paid >$230 + tax, bar included:  $170

Well, dang it!  I bought this Dry Dock last year just before my Trooper died, and after another vehicular change, I figured out the Dry Dock won't work with my 2016 Honda Pilot's geometry.  Now my loss is your gain.  It folds down to ease loadings and to allow rear gate/hatch use.

Craftsmen's Corner / Scratch & scuff repair - great YT vid
« on: December 20, 2017, 02:47:45 PM »
I was just notified of this great technique for repairing those worn keel areas:

Notice I didn't say that it would win any beauty contests.

The end of the vid is especially good as they discuss the various other things these experienced kayakers tried before landing at this method.  Sigh, to my dismay, they knock WestSystems' G3 Flex Epoxy -- yes, I just bought a pack of that this week to reinforce the bow & stern.  They discuss the use of milk jugs (non-colored plastic), and I suspect their results weren't so good because they were attempting the repair with just a thin putty knife.

I'll bet the milk jug might just work if one uses a more massive blade, like a painter's 5-in-1 tool or a taping knife or even a heavy duty flat scraper blade, that will hold the heat long enough to create a good, full weld.  Plus, with something heavier like milk jug, I would use strips that are only a 1/4" or 1/2" max. in width.

General Talk / How to rack an Outback?
« on: October 03, 2017, 07:59:56 PM »
Hopefully I'm pitchin' this in an acceptable area because on one hand it's a boat-specific question & a "How do you roll" question on the other hand, so I did the El Combino.

I have a Hobie Revo-16 & my wife has an Outback.  How do folks rack carry their wide-ass Outbacks?  OMG, that sucker is 36" wide, and while I can technically fit it on my bars with my Revo in its tray, the Outback saddle setup leaves a LOT to be desired. J-saddles?  Upside-down?  Thule Glide 'n Set Saddles?

Yes, picts help a lot.

TIA,
Bradley

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Plasti-Dip on plastic hulls?
« on: September 06, 2017, 10:36:06 AM »
Hey, I recently watched a YouTube vid about a modification made to a brand new Stealth.  The OP used Plasti-Dip to paint a fluoro band on his otherwise all white hull, and this got me wondering if the Plasti-Dip would stick to the more common plastic hulls.  Any thoughts on this?
