Note: You do not have to join the derby! If you want to just come up to fish and enjoy yourself, that's fine with us!
Derby rules:
$10 donation for each person fishing.
100% payout.
3 chances to to win.
This is a photo or retention contest. Pics must clearly show length when on a measuring board. Those that wish to keep their fish can bring them to the judges for measurement.
#1 - Kokanee - Longest total length of your 10 fish limit.
#2 - Kokanee - Longest single fish.
#3 - Alternate fish - This can be any fish you catch.... Trout, Bass, Carp, Sturgeon, Whatever.... Longest single fish.

If there happens to be a tie, you can split the prizes or just Indian Leg Wrestle for it!

All cash and prizes will be split up between the 3 categories.

Prizes - Last year, a few people generously donated Lures, Dodgers, Stickers and other items to the pot. If you have something/anything to donate, please let me or bbt95762(Brian) know. Does not have to be fishing or kayaking related.

Looks like we already have more people signed up than last year. It's going to be great. I'm stoked already and it's still 4 months away!

Ugh if I didn’t have a wedding to attend that weekend I’d be there! :smt013

Hoping to attend one of these meetups this year.

We are in the planning stages of a camping/fishing get together at Sly Creek. Tentatively the weekend of June 22nd.
Kevin.

It's worth the drive for you bay area people! With wives and girlfriends last year there were about 20 of us. I had a great time meeting, fishing and just hanging out with new people. Not so much with the ones I already new.  :smt044 I'm expecting larger Kokes this year. I have seen many 14 and a few 15 inchers come out of there already this year. If Dark Day Campground is full and we cant squeeze you into one of the sites with us, there is another camp campground just down the road called Schoolhouse. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5298300.pdf

AOTY / Re: Electric Motors in AOTY
« on: January 26, 2024, 10:09:47 AM »
Could anyone with a motor chime in on how they feel about it?  Would this encourage you to join AOTY and participate?

We also now have the Hybrid of electric assisted peddles, and some day we will probably all fish off of HoverYaks  :smt044
I would join AOTY if allowed. I use a trolling motor. My kayak does not have peddles. I joined AOTY two years ago knowing that only the fish caught when paddling would count. I gave up on this idea very quickly. I soon realized that trying to troll and paddle at the same time was very difficult for three reasons.
1. When I got a hook up, it took time to set the paddle down and grab the rod. This resulted in a lot of lost fish.

2. I like my rods out in front of me when trolling. Hard to detect a strike when they are behind you. This forced me to use longer rods in order to get the lines out far enough to be able to paddle. This resulted in making it harder to land a fish due to the length of the rods.

3. I had issues when turning too sharp when paddling, the inside line would come close to the kayak and make it almost imposable to paddle with out hitting it.

I have none of these issues when using the trolling motor.
As it stands right now, I'm on the outside, jealously looking in to those that have peddle drive.

AOTY / Re: Electric Motors in AOTY
« on: January 23, 2024, 07:53:25 AM »
I'm for inclusion. I'm 64 and physically unable to use a peddle kayak for more than a hour. In order for me to join the AOTY, I would be forced to paddle. In my eyes that puts me at a disadvantage to those with peddle capability. I would not be opposed to a special category for beat up old dudes like me and others.

As most do, I started off paddling on an inexpensive kayak. When I was ready to upgrade, I tried the peddle types. Tried both push/pull and bicycle styles. Unfortunately, due to years of motocross racing, my knees just couldn't take it after a few hours. This left me with three options. 1. Just keep paddling 2. Buy a boat 3. Use a trolling motor. I chose the later for several reasons. No space to keep a boat and with a trolling motor, I can use it or chose to paddle. This has allowed me to expand my time on the water and really upped my fishing experience.  I agree with the necessity of knowing your limitation. If you don't know your limitations then you really shouldn't be in big or moving water.

I still have my Tonka Truck. I got it on my 5th birthday in 1965. Mine is a brighter yellow but has more rust.

A few of us are hitting Amador this Sunday. Launch about 9:00. Starting off trolling but may end up banking it if we find them stacked up in a cove. Ch.69

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: baitcaster reel recommendations?

Al beat me to it. Abu Garcia Max DLC for Freshwater and the Max Toro DLC for the saltwater. These reels are awesome!

I've always been disappointed when I went.  Although if I did, i'd go for the free fly fishing instructions, that seemed cool.  Used to always be able to get a coupon for parking i'd see if that is still available.
Disappointed? The only thing that disappoints me is that I don't have a big enough bank account to get the 22' North River that's on my bucket list!!!

Glad it worked out for you so easy. There are a ton of horror stories about people having to go back multiple times and end up paying hundreds of $$$.

That's cool. I've saw them on occasion last year in the Guadalupe when going to a Sharks game. None this year though.
