Kayak Fly Fishing / Berryessa - Go early to beat the heat
« on: August 04, 2022, 09:46:33 AM »
Fished the middle of the lake yesterday morning (8/3/22). Walked the bank at Oak Shores while a buddy tried kayaking a bit ... new to the sport and he wanted to try some different craft - so I let him get his feet wet with my Hobie.

Managed to get a half dozen grabs on topwater between 8AM and 10AM, but what little action we had was limited to the mornings only. This is traditional Berryessa August fare ... so get on the water early and switch to conventional tackle as the heat builds (so you can get to the deeper water with more oxygen).

Blazing hot yesterday, temps built to about 102 and chased us off the lake with authority.

Was using a black 2/0 popper with furnace hackle and white legs. The bays have a lot of weeds on the surface and I would run the popper along this edge to wake things up. Saw plenty of fish early and nothing later, so they are getting into cover and out of thin oxygen as the heat builds.

Landed a smallmouth and unbuttoned a similar fish before retiring early

Get on the water early and bring plenty of fluids.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Sherman Lake 3/11/2022
« on: March 12, 2022, 03:27:25 PM »
Water Temperature 55 degrees

I went out Friday hoping the Fishing Gods were in good humor, and the stripers were unwary ..

Fished from about 730AM till the high tide (930AM), then fished an additional four hours of the outgoing tide. Stuck a single fish at the height of the tide, around 9AM, but it came off after a short fight. I figure he would have been in the 16" - 20" range - nothing monstrous. It took a "baby bluegill" style streamer that I have been fiddling with as a potential dual threat for the more numerous largemouth bass.

Wind picked up between 10AM and Noon, switched to a spinning rod and chartreuse Rat-L-Trap, and hooked three additional fish. One keeper about 5 lbs, and two shakers - in the 17" range.

Summary, fishing was slow and the fish were solitary and not in great numbers. No other anglers in the area other than the bait fishermen that frequent the area connecting to the river proper. I assume the fish are elsewhere ...

Kayak Fly Fishing / Fished the Delta (Sherman Lake) 11/12/2021
« on: November 13, 2021, 07:24:14 AM »
This was the first experience with my kayak where I saw myself a navigational hazard versus the traditional "predatory" angler.

The fog in the delta was so thick that visibility was about 35 yards, so wisdom won out over bravado and I stayed on the south side and fished the rock rip rap that lines that side of the area. A lot of parked trucks and the entrance road stuffed with bank fishermen suggests the fish are in the area, but the fog bank tempered my enthusiasm - and I stayed out of the traffic lanes.

I managed one 16" fish up near the launch area - and caught an enormous Pikeminnow further down on the same streamer. I was fishing the traditional "baitfish" colored 6" bucktail (white belly, peacock top, flashabou center), and added lead eyes and lots of flash to counter the off colored water.

Once again I figured the water color was the driving force in the result - as I only had about 15" of visibility on that side. Tules and weeds filter the water better, but I had neither on my side of the impoundment.

Fished two hours of the incoming and two hours of the outgoing, which yielded only the two grabs mentioned above. The fog is a real obstacle, so if you venture into it make sure you have your lights and whistles ready (or stay near the bank like us wimps!)

Kayak Fly Fishing / Did a quick run for Stripers on Wednesday
« on: October 31, 2021, 05:38:09 PM »
I knew the Delta would be muddy and feature a lot of floating debris, but the wind was nil - weather was nice - and this being the last of the warm days, I went anyway.

The water was really dirty as I expected. Visibility appeared to be about a foot. I fished streamers around Sherman Lake, and chatted with one other fellow brave enough to take his boat out ... both of us blanked. A lot of folks launching traditional craft and I saw at least one other kayak angler, but I saw no fish.

I fished the three hours of incoming and an hour of the outgo, with no grabs.

The water color is the issue as flies are simply not visible enough to draw the fish in unless you're lucky enough to hit him in the nose.

Had a great trip just the same, will return once the waters lose a little color.

General Talk / Great White Sharks and Yum Yum Yellow
« on: May 26, 2021, 04:31:58 PM »
I keep reading of the saltwater exploits of the community and shake my head ... absolutely no way am I going to tempt fate by sticking my big toe in salt water.

... but then I think, sissy! Get your big boy pants on and get a little brine on them ...

Then I turn on the telly to have a bit of news to aid the digestion, and find out about the explosion in the Great White population off of California. There's damn few things that turn a fellow's knees to water, but something with teeth bigger'n yours is bound to be one of them.

https://phys.org/news/2021-05-great-white-shark-northern-california.html Apparently the conditions are ideal to support a larger population ... and I interpret that to mean my lilly white rear end in a plastic boat being part of that recipe.

Nope. Even all them halibut you're catching won't make me do it.

I remember reading a book on sharks and how researchers called the color of life preservers (the traditional orange kapok military stuff) Yum Yum Yellow. Apparently big sharks prefer that color to Puce or Mango ..

Kayak Fly Fishing / Lake Berryessa Trip 4/21/21
« on: April 21, 2021, 04:42:56 PM »
Water temperatures moving up, tested the AM at 62 degrees (at Oak Shores parking lot), tested 64 degrees in the direct sun of afternoon - after fishing North for a couple of miles (around Big Island)

Hooked 4 Smallmouth Bass (landed two), One "Chunk" Crappie, and myself numerous times ... but I don't think those count.

Most of the fish were on a #4 Grey Wooly Bugger, but the largest Smallmouth took the Crayfish colored one that I tie, Brown / Orange flavor. The Crappie ate a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich that i lashed to a 6/0 treble ... it was my only sandwich, too ... (sob)

Picture included for posterity ... Saw at least one NCKA sticker on a "Yaller" Revo, there were two nice fellows fishing for Kokanee that I ran into at the Parking Lot.

I was looking for something that might serve as a definitive guide for maintenance on a Hobie Drive ... Hopefully it would cover what to lube, what to check for wear, what adjustments to make over time, simple things that would increase the longevity of the beast ...

I checked the Hobie site and other than a few tips, came up empty. Does something akin to a maintenance manual exist? (or must I comb this and other sites to make mine own?) I did find the post on dismantling the 180 drive, but was also looking for simple information (or tips) like, "lube this every trip" versus "grease this only once per year" type info.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Fished Indian Valley Reservoir yesterday
« on: April 17, 2021, 06:16:42 AM »
The 12 miles of dirt road tend to screen the casual, so I wound up being largely alone. Caught 5 smallmouth on a Gray Wooly Bugger (size 4) - and was surprised to find my biggest fish was a Catfish ... which made my day. First Catfish on a fly  (about 2lb) and while I had heard they ate fairly aggressively, was surprised to see it on my line.

As it always does, the wind came up at 11AM and blew me all over Hell's Half Acre, so I stashed the fly rod and fished a variety of conventional tackle. Indian Valley always blows heavily at 11AM, then the wind starts to taper later in the afternoon, so bring some conventional gear to fish during the worst of the blow.

Caught 10 largemouth, one more Catfish (about same size) and two additional Smallmouth using a Senko worm during the windy period. Beached the kayak numerous times to hold position in the wind - then fished the Senko on the points. Brain Damage good fun, and well worth the trip.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Fished East Park last friday (4/9/21)
« on: April 15, 2021, 04:47:43 PM »
I had never tried fishing the opener at East Park ... Colusa County operated lake that opens in April and closes in October each year.

Caught some nice Crappie on a gray Wooly Bugger (#6) and caught bass on larger Brown Buggers, size 2. Lots of anglers on the bank, a few boats, and nine fishing kayaks. Most of the bass were caught on rip baits (that I witnessed) a few on Spinner baits.

Nice lake, no trash (although that may have changed due to all the opening day visitations)

Kayak Fly Fishing / Fished Stony Gorge this morning
« on: April 15, 2021, 04:43:36 PM »
Water temperature is 60 degrees, so it's still a bit cold for the bass to be intent on reproduction. Fished the lake (my first time there) and was surprised at the water clarity, absence of humans, presence of bald eagles, and how full it was. Some folks showed later ... fished subsurface most of the day and a bit of top water in the afternoon to no avail.

Went to the center of the lake and quickly landed two on a drop shot rig, so the fish are still in the deep water and not yet in the shallows.

Introductions / New Meat
« on: April 15, 2021, 04:39:21 PM »
Retired recently and treated myself to a Hobie Kayak as a means to make amends for all those years of nose-to-the-grindstone. Fly fishing junkie that specializes in fishless fishing at Berryessa, Indian Valley, East Park, the Sacramento Delta, and (on foot) chasing Shad in the American.

Looking for like minded types - with good sense of humor and low self esteem. No, I am not trying to find out your secret spots I'm thinking that my next of kin would be notified of where to drag for the body ...

Thanks in advance for enduring my questionable humor.
