Stealth / Damaged Fisha 555 Rod Holder
« on: November 28, 2022, 10:54:33 AM »
On 11/23 I yard-saled in about 2 ft of water at Rockaway. I had a gaffe hook in one of the flush mount rod holders and two ambush hoops on the rear deck. I'm not sure of the exact mechanics of what happened but the gaffe hook applied some torque to the rod holder. The rod holder broke off and the boat took some minor damage. I don't know much about fiberglass repairs. If anyone has any ideas on what needs to be done at this point to prevent additional damage, please speak up:) Thanks!

Stealth / Fish Finder and Transducer Install - Fisha 555
« on: October 07, 2022, 10:18:33 AM »
After scouring this forum and youtube, and asking some of you endless questions, I have finally completed the fish finder install on my Fisha 555.

In brief:

The transducer is in the outer hull in the rectangular cutaway that looks intended for it. Secured to hull with 8 ounces of duct putty. Cable exits the outer hull through a wine bottle cork that I drilled out and jammed through the stock hole. Noqua battery hangs on the stock bungees just in front of the livewell. All the cables are kept neat with zipties and stick-on ziptie anchors. Cables exit the boat through a hole cut in the hatch cover and fitted with a Wilderness Systems thru-hull wiring kit. See play-by-play below.

A few notes:
- I will seal the cover to the outer hull after doing my shakedown cruise this evening.
- My boat came from first owner with a adhesive railblaza mount on hatch cover. I removed the inner railblaza part and screwed on a ram ball mount. For now I will use this to secure the FF display. It was already there so might as well try it. With only the slightest bit of hole enlargement of the soft metal, the ram ball fit perfectly into existing holes of the suction railblaza mount.
-After finishing the install, I realized there is a conflict between the fore hatch strap and the new thru-hull wiring plug. oops! Eddie says I only need the aft strap, so I'll delete the fore one.

1. Shave wine cork to snugly fit black plastic housing. Drill hole down center. Slice longways with hacksaw.
2. Roll out duct putty to desired thickness, then trim away excess.
3. Press transducer into outer hull. Try to be level in all planes.
4. Remove hatch cover to trill with spade bit (there are better bits for this. I don't own them). Use lumber as a backing board for drilling. Drill 1/8" pilot hole. Embed tip of spade but into pilot hole and drill with very light pressure and lots of patience.
5. Add thin layer of epoxy to "chalky" exposed edges of new hole.
6. Attach thru-hull plug kit and ziptie anchors. Pull cords to desired length and make it all clean and pretty inside with zip ties.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Deep six vs AFW Planer
« on: September 26, 2022, 01:56:12 PM »
I have some experience with the Deep Six for salmon trolling. I also own an AFW planer that I have never used. There seems to be much more online regarding the Deep Six but little about the AFW--certainly, nothing I could find in the way of a comparison.

Does anyone here use an AFW planer for trolling? If so, could you help me understand how it differs from the Deep Six?

Thanks.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Standard Horizons VHF Issues
« on: September 01, 2022, 09:50:38 AM »
I am having the following problesm on my 2 Standard Horizons radios:

HX 210 - incoming transmissions are almost inaudible faint (yes, volume is all the way up)

HX40 - I can hear incoming transmission, but no one can hear my transmissions

Anyone had similar issues and able to offer troubleshooting tips?

(fortunately, I have a third radio, but its huge and I'd love better performance from these other units that Ive owned less than 2 years each)

also- if you have a rec for a handheld radio less than $125 please feel free to share.

thanks!

Hi All!

I'll be in Pizmo Beach Area for Labor Day weekend. Any of you care to share with me where the best place is to launch my yak and where some productive fishing grounds may be?

All tips are welcome and thank you in advance!

(NOTE: this post was originally titled "Seeking Recommendations - MORRO BAY Labor Day 2022". I modified the title to reflect a change in my plans)

Stealth / New Stealth Owner has Transport Questions
« on: August 19, 2022, 02:13:57 PM »
Hi all,

I just scored a second-hand fisha 555. I have a pickup truck (with bed extender)that I use to haul my Compass. The 18-ish foot 555 is unsafe and ridiculous hanging out the back of my truck.

Any pickup owners have a suggestion for a rack set up that one person can load and unload without putting the boat on the asphalt?

I'm thinking a Yakima Longarm extender from the hitch, paired with an aero bar (or similar) on the roof of the cab. This would allow me to slide the kayak onto the truck at an angle while still on the dolly and then raise the Longarm once the bow of the boat is over the cab, allowing the boat to be secured and transported level.

If you can save me a headache with some good tips I'd appreciate it.

General Talk / New Dungeness Crab Marker buoy requirements
« on: October 04, 2021, 10:50:27 AM »
Does anyone know the reason behind the new requirement to add a 5" x 3" marker buoy to the main buoy of crab traps?

https://cdfwmarine.wordpress.com/2021/09/24/new-trap-regulations-for-recreational-crabbing-in-california/

I can't believe how expensive these small buoys can be. I found a good deal on a 12-pack of 4" x 2" but that doesn't meet the size requirement. I'm considering the following options:

1. Buy/use 4" x 2" marker buoys. They are not the full required size, but I think they demonstrate respect for the rule and a good effort ;)

2. Cutting up an oversize red pool noodles to make small buoys.

Thoughts?

Selling a motor mount that I bought for my AI which I have since sold. Cosmetically, its scratched up from my sloppy assembly/install. One of the cross supports is also bowed but should be easily remediable. Retails for $399 plus tax. Asking $250. I can hand it off in Pacifica or San Mateo. No request for shipping, please :)

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Pedro Point 7/5
« on: July 06, 2021, 12:38:49 PM »
My lady and toddler are on the East Coast this week so I got out on the ocean twice in the "new" Revo. Monday morning I pulled up my 3rd and 4th lifetime Lings (I've only been fishing about one year). Also the first time I've limited on anything from the kayak. It was a great morning  :smt001

General Talk / Can anyone ID these yaks?
« on: June 07, 2020, 03:28:22 PM »
Can anyone ID these boats from the logo? They are being sold nearby and I'm trying to figure out what they are. Perhaps suspiciously, the owner does not know...

Thanks!

Introductions / Hello from New Member Matthew in San Mateo!
« on: June 05, 2020, 05:55:59 PM »
Hi Everyone.

I'm Matthew. I live in the SF Bay Area and just got into kayaking via crabbing. Only a few weeks ago I watched a few YouTube videos of people crabbing off piers with fishing rods and snares. After two weekends of crabbing from piers, I wanted more interaction with the water, more exercise, and more crabs! So I bought some crab traps and dropped them from my paddle board one weekend. The next weekend I was the owner of an old OK Trident.

I'm excited to learn more about ocean kayaking and sharpen my skills.

Glad to be here!
