General Fishing Tips / Are seals/sealions an issue around Doran?
« on: March 13, 2022, 04:52:07 PM »
If I am hooping for crab, can I get away with using a bait pin and a rockfish carcass (probably together with a Scotty bait jar), or do I need to use a more dog-proof bait container?

WILLAPA MARINE–Complete Round Crab Pot Kit
https://willapamarineproducts.com/willapa-s-complete-crab-pot-kit/

Brand New with tag
Retails for $116.99 at West Marine or $114.99 at Willapa Outdoor

Description and specs from the manufacturer's website (above):
"Round crab pot made with black vinyl coated 3" x 3" wire features four entrance gates, bridle rope and opens from the top for easy catch/bait access!"

Round Dungeness Crab Pot 24"L x 24"W x 9"H
  • 100' of 1/4" Poly Rope
  • Attached 5"x11" Red/White Buoy
  • Line Weight with Snap
  • Bait Box
  • Crab Gauge (WA, OR, CA)
  • Made in the USA

I picked this up at a thrift store, again brand new. I prefer folding traps, so I am reselling it to help pay for my folding trap habit.

I am offering here before listing on craigslist and offerup. NCKA price $100, plus I will throw in a polystyrene marker float painted red so you can make it fully compliant with the CA current regs.

Local pick-up in Sebastopol, or possible meet up as far up the 101 as Healdsburg.

So based on my read of the current CA regs, there are two issues with the relatively inexpensive Danielson FTC 24x24 folding traps:

1) escape opening created when rot cord fails is not at least 5" in diameter
2) the cotton rot cord holding the escape ring over the escape opening is 4 pieces, rather than "a single strand" (sic).

If so, both problems would be solved by cutting an opening in the top greater than 5"x 5", adding a hinged door lid of PVC wire mesh, and using appropriate cotton rot line with the bungee for the fastener for the lid. (Basically like the top-loading door of the similar, but CA compliant, Promar TR-555). (And then permanently affixing the escape ring by replacing the cotton with zip ties or stainless wire).

Does that sound right to everyone, or am I missing some other deficiency?

(I know that one can also bend the corners of the escape port to make a 5" opening and threading a single piece of cotton rot cord around the perimeter of the escape ring. But I like the doors on the Promars, and I have access to wire mesh to make lids).

Recommendations?

My experience is that most of the hollow plastic ones start leaking and filling with water.

I was thinking the best might bey the brick red (aka "brown") ones from Promar (FL-35B), for instance used in the bridle for the Ambush hoops.  Possibly painted a more bright red.

But if you've got recommendations for decent ones, especially local sources in Sonoma County or the Bay Area

Hi All,

I am down in San Diego, thinking of coming up to visit my folks and family friends in Sonoma County for a couple of days, and also thinking of bringing kayak and crab traps (or possibly even bringing my 14ft skiff).

Wondering how the crabbing is around Bodega Bay and/or other relatively easily accessible areas now that the commercial season has opened?

I'd be interested in making some local connections to have some company on the water and learn the local spots.

FWIW, I've crabbed from my Hobie Revo up in SE Alaska.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Discuss Crab Pot pros/cons/tweaks
« on: February 03, 2019, 11:07:37 AM »
So I was in Alaska in summer 2017, and did a lot of crabbing, using the rigid Danielson traps. I wasn't in love with the fact that it was too wide to fit down into tank well flat, it was either in there diagonally or siting entirely up on the gunwales. I also made some other mods.

I will be back up there this summer, and was thinking of fabricating some custom traps. So I am interested in hearing from folks about which traps you are using and what you like about them and what could be better.

It seems like most yakkers are either using the rigid folding types (most Danielson or Promar) or the Promar folding mesh TR-102W (or modified TR-101s). But certainly tell us if you are using something else (although I'm focusing here on traps/pots, not hoop nets or traps that only close when you pull them up).

So tell us what you are using, how you fish them (long soaks, short soaks, etc.), what you like and what needs improvement.

I'll go first below.

Craftsmen's Corner / no drill FF mount on Malibu Stealth-12 foot brace rail
« on: February 03, 2019, 10:23:58 AM »
While I no longer have my old Malibu Stealth 12, I thought folks might benefit from this DIY, which could be applied to many paddle yaks with adjustable foot braces.

(Sorry, I don't have all the sizes of the parts handy, but this gives the idea of what I did).

Here's a first pic which (in addition to showing my kludgy short-term fix) shows an allen wrench in one of the back screws holding on the left foot brace:

Here's what I replaced the screw/bolt with. It's a RAM mount small ball with female threads that matched the original screw. I screwed the new screw into the female threaded RAM ball, and then cut off the screw head with a hacksaw and cleaned up the cut with a file.  I used brass for both corrosion resistance and something softer to cut than SS, but one could use SS.

Here's the final install of the FF mount. (You can kind of see the top my DIY PVC pipe scupper mount, too, for a completely no-drill/no-hole install).

I was initially using a small LiPo battery in a sealed tuperware-like cup in the cup-holder. That battery died pretty quick, so I'd recommend sticking with good, old-fashioned SLA stored inside the hull. On most yaks, if you want a no-drill install you can just close the front hatch on the wire without much leakage.

Introductions / Hello
« on: February 02, 2019, 06:54:49 PM »
Hi all,

Allow me to introduce myself: I am Peter.

I grew up in Sebastopol, fished occasionally on the party boats out of Bodega Bay (when I was a kid and now occasionally when I am visiting), and fished for rockfish in the tidepools north of Gualala.

I live in San Diego now. You can find me on bigwatersedge.com using the same screen name. I've kayak fished the SD Bays, La Jolla, outside Mission Beach, and Baja, as well as in SE Alaska.

I worked for the USFS in Wrangell, AK in summer 2017, and did a lot of crabbing (as well as eventually managing to get a Pacific halibut from the yak, nothing huge, but still). I'll be going back this summer and was thinking about making some crab traps that fit better in the tankwell of my Hobie Revo. (It's a 2008 when there was only one size Revo: 13).

I thought this would be a good place to discuss the pros and cons of the available crab trap models with other yakkers that have experience crabbing, and what people would see as tweaks that could improve them.
