Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Go Shimano!
« on: March 21, 2024, 10:39:09 AM »
The engage mechanism in my thunnus 4000 spinning reel was not locking after the bait setting was disengaged.  I've gotten used to my tranx and avet but this little spinning reel has monstrous capabilities supposedly if a get a monstrous hookup opportunity someday.  The list they replaced for 37$. seems like they overhauled it and seems basically new.  They threw in a new spool as well.

4-6 weeks turnaround.  The only concern I had was not putting a reference note in the shipping envelope.  Trusted the USPS and did not pay for insurance.  I put the repair reference # on the outside of the envelope and possibly one other #.  Next time I will put all info. inside.

I regret not going down to his shop for one more razzing by Keith…he’s chased me out of his shop with a broom for talking too much.  Timely with the pending demise of the sturgeon fishery…time is marching on…

Recipes / Got Crab?
« on: December 07, 2023, 11:40:06 PM »
Here we go.  Pressure canning tomorrow.

3 batch test

Big bag fresh picked
Small bag picked frozen
Bag underneath small bag, picked frozen in shell.

The picked frozen shell is lacking in texture.  Hopefully the canning process will revitalize.

Adding a bay leaf per jar for protein structure retention.  It worked with the herring I canned so may as well.

Stay tuned... :smt006

Craftsmen's Corner / Maker motivation. Greenland Paddle
« on: November 07, 2023, 08:57:47 AM »
This is my place for accountability, starting this project and completing it.  My buddy has a large chunk of cedar and cut me out a 2 by 8 rough.  He doesn't even have a kayak and is having a blast cutting his own for his grandkids.  This will be my extra paddle in the hatch. It has its merits in history and function.  Some of you wood guys could bust this out in a minute.  Paging Cowbro :smt005 :smt006. I'll do my best.  Stay tuned... :smt006

Launching from miiler point at 7.  Finding bait hopefully.  Paddling back at 12:30.

Cancel Sausalito
Tide seems ideal.  Launching from Dunphy.  Hopefully launch by 7.  Find bait and get to the grounds I've never fished.  After Monterey I feel adventurous.  The only technical part will be getting across the depths to the shallower bar.  It's about a 2mi. distance from the launch.  Hopefully catch a ride to the grounds and a ride back to the landing.  Come one come all...no guarantees.  Off da wattah' by 1. :smt006

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Report Tomales 9/22
« on: September 23, 2023, 10:51:01 AM »
Launched at 7.  At yellow buoy skunking on bait.  Suddenly a small surface flippin’ field of friends fluttered by.  I dropped my six hook size ten sabiki and pulled up a loaded christmas tree light seeming of anchovies.  Flashing and glistening goodness.  I felt mega stoked cuz bait was slim for many.  Stay tuned.  Gotta do a haircut. :smt006

Drifted while throwing a swimbait.  My hooks were too big for the chovy size so I dismantled a hard lure to get the perfect hook.  Throwing all along the first channel weedbed drifting north.  Around 10:30, boom! Mid to north hog. Weight then dropped, dang, I missed it, then waited but 2 seconds and the tap came back and the weight stuck.  Stoked!  Reeling slow, reach for my net, pressure on, then….no pressure,  no weight, no fish…sigh….ripped swimbait just below the hook.  Haircut break.

Drifted to a mark about .5mi. North and started to work a ledge.  Nothing.  Check my warrior chovy and was gonna switch him out cuz time was limited.  He was lively enough, blind, rehooked yet lively.  I encouraged him and sent him back down.  Rod tip does that thing.  You know, like a cat messing with an insect.  Finally the rod tip stays down and I’m oh so anxious.  I haven’t landed one for a while and I already missed one.  I take my time, strip out some line.  Pretend to forget about it.  Then, I begin to reel up slowly and it tears off!  Boom I’m thinking he set his own hook.  Start bringing it up, one click tight on avet, get the net, reeling reeling... pop off…mega sigh again.

Wind picks up.  One chovy left.  Hmmm, maybe I found em’.  Head back to mark following my previous trail.  Haircut break.  Stay tuned…

I do the almost exact route, 18-24 fow on a shelf and not 10 minutes later I’m hooked up again.  Felt the head clicks, put in freespool and let him be.  After an infinite wait I started to crank and zzzzzzzzz.  I felt confident in this round.  Net at the ready, yet still botchable.  Ok, color, not tiny not monstrous.  Keep an eye on weight, drag towards whilst scooping up and woohoo!  Lip grippers, game clip, remove net, brain spike, wire, bleed, hatched with wet burlap!  So so happy!  It’s been a while as you may suspect.  Nothing big plenty o’ fun!

27” 5.5lbs. Fully dressed.

Bonus nature report:
Otters 5 in a group, paddled over stingrays.

Recipes / Mackerel 1st attempt
« on: September 19, 2023, 10:57:59 AM »
Here we go.  Never had it.  Left it whole on ice all night.   I knew it was urgent to process by now.  I cut off the head and pulled the guts out with it.  Filleted, skinned and removed all blood line.  Meat still red and appearing gamey.  Was gonna pop it in the fridge but hadn’t eaten yet so here comes protein breakfast.  Marinate in sesame oil, shoyu, salt pepper and mirin. All splashes maybe 1 Tbls of each, s & p, couple cranks,  5 minutes.  Avocado oil and cast iron.  Lay in fillets, flip after I minute, leave on more 1 minute then pull.  I just say, broke my mout' onolicious kine, not fishy at all and I bet my bride would mack it.  Pun intended?  Yes, I was contemplating rice but fuggedabouddit.  Coulda topped with fresh green onion if I had it.  Wish I caught more now.  Was gonna mack it all down but saved a portion for da wifey for a taste test.  great bag of scaps fo da crab jar...Bon appetit’! :smt006

Wassup gents and slayers alike... :smt004

I was thinking about making a halibut costume to slip my chinook into if I happen to run across one whilst fishing in the ocean.  Does anyone have any design ideas that could help me.  Should I use real halibut skin?  I hope I could disguise up to a 20#'r...anything bigger someone might notice...

Gonna hopefully not wreck da stealth.  I've been whippin' a swimbait to no success but gonna stick with it.  I've been using my 3lb. chain to drag in tough current to throw against the tide but my trolley is on the starboard side only.  I'm going to install another trolley on the port side.  Reason, to use the chain on one side and the sea anchor(chute) on the other to achieve certain steady positioning in the bay for this technique.  Kinda bringing the kitchen sink without the space.  Also installing the Pacific Action Sail on the stealth for whatever "fun" reason.  I blame Mr. X for the inspiration though I'm gonna keep it way local.  SFbay Muir Tomales Bolinas and hopefully Ft. Ross due to regs and hope to fish with Moo... :smt006.  Opinons and ideas on simplicity and efficacy and straight up brainstorming...no response is required but technical and philosophical input is desired.  Love this place!  NCKA alll day! :smt007 :smt006
