General Talk / Re: Paddle vs Pedal vs Sailing Fishing Tactics

The whole thing about primary and secondary stability, + the ease of dealing with the boat when you’re in the water and it’s upside down

I am not an expert on kayak stability but from what I have seen hobies are fairly stable when standing. Stability, I would imagine is also based on where your center of gravity is. You're definitely right that many pedal yaks have high seats that seem sketchy as hell in the ocean but not all pedals are like that. Plenty of documentation of pedal kayaks doing well in rough water. Regardless of kayak type, like you said, planning for immersion is always one of the most important things you can do.

General Talk / Re: What to look for in an ocean fishing rod?
« on: May 04, 2023, 12:11:52 PM »
Lots of good advice here. I have used an Ugly Stik Tiger, its a great do-most rod for the money. The best you can get for $70-80 IMO. If you want to step up to the next rung in terms of price I would recommend an Okuma Guide Select Swimbait Rod H 1-6oz. I bought this rod to use for big swimbaits for striper mostly and its a great casting rod. Since then I have used it vertical jigging for rockfish and lings, with a 3-way for halis, and regular bait fishing. The rod can actually handle weight throughout its rated range for casting and I have used up to 10oz on a 3 way for halis and lings with no problem. The rod has a nice moderate action that's perfect for treble hook baits and has plenty of backbone for setting the hook on a single hook as well. I paired mine with a daiwa lexa 300wn. I got mine for $110 at fisherman warehouse on sale but there is usually a sale somewhere.

Not sure that it has been covered in this thread extensively but I think one of the major benefits of a pedal kayak is stability and thus ease of standing. My buddy recently got a pedal kayak and we primarily fish for striper in the Delta and surrounding rivers where casting accuracy can often be the most important element of fishing. Being able to stand and more accurately pinpoint casts, see followers, and work baits like topwater more easily. I'm still in a paddle yak and I find it pretty unstable, and while I could get some outriggers that's just another piece of equipment to store and take with me on the water.

I hope to get a pedal yak when I can simply based on my buddy's experience in his yak.

This is such a cool nexus of things for me. Just started working part-time for Kerans and West and have been fishing Liberty for the past 2 years. My understanding is that the existing plan would still allow for kayak launches at the end of the levee road with minimal parking. Is that still the case? I won't be able to make a public comment today, the timing of these meetings really works against public comment unfortunately, but best of luck building support for the small boat launch.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Mono/Floro to braid knots
« on: February 16, 2023, 04:00:21 PM »
Honestly I think the Alberto knot is by far the easiest to tie OTW and its very strong. I have caught striper up to 25lbs on the knot without problem, and backlashed my reel with a 10oz lure and the knot was totally fine. If you're going to tie a knot at home then the FG is probably the way to go.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Nomad Design vibes for rockfish and lings

I think the Nomad lures are more for warmer water species but I like the idea of adapting them to work for RF and lings. I think the Squidtrex just came out so they are trying to hype the bait up a bit and get the word out, in my opinion I think it would be great for Lings especially.

General Fishing Tips / Nomad Design vibes for rockfish and lings

Hello all,

Just wanted to see if anyone has any experience using the Nomad Design vibe type lures. I feel like these would be great for RF and lings, a slightly different presentation than they've likely seen before. The addition of rattles and thus sound is intriguing. What does everybody think?

For anyone interested these are the lures I'm talking about:

General Fishing Tips / Re: Late Summer Stripers in The Delta
« on: August 30, 2022, 10:00:33 AM »
Glad it was helpful and you were able to get on a few!! I used to fish Sherman island with my dad when I was your son’s age. Those little stripers are always fun and you can get nonstop action sometimes. Sounds like you had a good time and that’s what’s important

First off, there are still plenty of striper in the delta although they are finally moving out into the bay. This has been a weird year for striper in the delta.

One caveat to what I’m about to say is that I don’t usually fish the main rivers, I prefer fishing sloughs. If you just want to fish the main rivers troll a 4”-5” jerkbait. If you don’t get any love, add a white worm on the back treble and you should do fine.

In terms of techniques I prefer artificials like swimbaits, jerkbaits, chatterbaits, and topwater to name a few. Live or dead bait also works great and when fishing around Sherman I have done well with pile worms or frozen anchovies. The smaller fish in the 13”-20” class are good fun on bass gear and can be caught reliably with smaller topwater, jerkbaits, and chatterbaits in 1-6 fow. For fish in the 20”-30ish” class a 5-6” pencil popper is great or 4” swimbait. I wouldn’t worry about trophy class fish if you’re new to delta striper fishing because most people take a very specialized approach in terms of gear, location and timing.

The trick with striper is finding them. If you find a school you can definitely catch 10+ fish no problem in 30 minutes but you might not get a single bite the rest of the day. Target changes in depth on a moving tide, I like outgoing, any pumps or pipes that are discharging water are great.

Honestly this video gives you a ton of useful information and was helpful for me when starting out. If you want more info shoot me a pm.

For Sale / Shimano TLD15 reel
« on: May 31, 2022, 08:49:42 PM »
I have a nearly new Shimano TLD15 reel for sale. Used for halis once and for lings once as well. Thought I was going to be doing some trolling but for a variety of reasons that's not happening. A bit overkill for what I need. The reel is spooled with 30lb mono that is also new. Reel taken care of after use 9.9/10 cosmetically and internally. I'm asking $150, willing to consider trades. PM me for more pictures or questions.

Are these fish flash frozen? Black cod is bomb yo

The fish is not flash frozen on the boat unfortunately but is flash frozen as soon as we offload it. Black Cod probably won’t be in until later August and we’d target them between the King Salmon openers.

Thanks for the feedback Eddie. I kinda figured this wouldn’t get much or any sales but why not? Tight lines!

General Talk / Alaskan Salmon For Sale
« on: June 24, 2021, 08:28:01 AM »
Hello NorCal kayak anglers,

I recently got a job in Ketchikan, Alaska working on the commercial fishing boat Lea, trolling for King and Coho Salmon. While we haven’t left the harbor yet, I thought I’d make this post to let y’all know that we will be selling our catch of salmon and potentially some Halibut and Black Cod as well. For anyone interested we do single orders shipped to your door with a minimum of 10lbs per order as this is a small business operation. To make an order email Rob Bateman at blueseafoodsllc@gmail.com.

Hope to hear from some of y’all,

Jackson (TheChungusAmongUs)
