Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Hull Protection
« on: Today at 09:59:51 AM »
The Outback has a small replaceable looking part ahead of the rudder but it seems like they need one on the front.
I've was using Gorilla tape in 3 layers and replacing it every few months or so. I finally got some Pereguard that doesn't look great with my install job (but better than tape) but has held up well so far. It comes in white as well as black and the white looks good on the Lynx. It adds minimal weight compared to some other solutions (Car door protector bumper strips). Pereguard for the win.

Thanks Al!  I love it, especially the weight.  My hesitation is mandatorily adding up to 32oz of lead to my platform for an unverified life expectancy of said released species.   :smt006
I've descended even a 20"+ Yellow Eye on 10oz. It took a bit to get him started but once they go down about 10 feet they seem to be able to keep going. That was in only about 60' of water though, so maybe that helped. I think Coppers and maybe Quillbacks go down easier. I plan on having only 12 oz on my Shelton and if that doesn't work then I could add another 10. I cannot see 32oz ever being needed. Maybe for a huge YE in 50 fathom plus? 50 fathom plus is where the survival of barotrauma seems suspect anyway.

Fishing Tournaments and Events / Re: MBK Derby 2024

I signed up. Would it be crazy to try to set up a clean n cook area for fish? Maybe it's too much with everything else going on. Not that I don't love a good hot dog though.

Long ago my wife and I had to navigate some like that in our Neckys, but it was a good swell with a surf contest going on as well.

Congrats Mark. Once you taste them, you’ll be even a bigger fan.

AOTY / Re: Legal method of measure for AOTY?

I’m just glad it’s not on the upper part of the leg  :smt044
Or the "third leg".

AOTY / Re: Electric motors are now allowed for AOTY.
« on: March 07, 2024, 02:48:04 PM »
Motors are definitely an advantage as far as getting to and from a fishing spot. I think there should be a 100pt or 200pt seasonal handicap applied to those with motors. I also think there should be a 100 to 200 point seasonal bonus given to those who fish with the added difficulty of having dogs on the back of their kayaks. This may not be a popular opinion.

CA Regulations / Re: Here is an actual link to the 2024 ocean regs
« on: March 06, 2024, 02:46:48 PM »
Thanks for sharing. I wonder if these regs are final for 2024.
I believe the meetings next week will set the regs/calendar
I think that is correct. I was surprised to see these already and then noticed there was no 20 fathom line, descenders, etc. mentioned, which I'm pretty sure are coming based on our discussions with DFW and PFMC.

AOTY / Re: Electric Motors in AOTY
« on: March 02, 2024, 09:37:05 AM »
I was against it on principle but I would like to see more participation so now I’m for it, but maybe add an asterisk if the winner is motorized. Or maybe add a 200pt handicap to the overall total.

I believe with the 20 fathom depth restriction combined with the use of descenders and zero retention of Quillback, that they should eliminate any in-season adjustments or changes, which are very disruptive.

Depends how beginner and what your set up is. But if you have the wetsuit, pfd and marine radio, then Half Moon Bay or Santa Cruz or Doran are the easiest launches. Timber Cove would be the next with usually easy launch and better fishing. In the Bay you need to know the tides. Definitely check wind and swell with wind less than 10mph and swell 3' or 4' or less.

Somewhere there was a compilation video of FnS group wipeouts on a bad day at Leffingwall. Overhead sets thrashed about 80% of the kayaks.

It's penciled in.

CA Regulations / Re: Email F&G Commission to oppose MPA expansion petitions
« on: February 05, 2024, 10:14:29 PM »
The best poke poling area on the San Mateo coast was turned into an SMR back in the day. I haven’t found anything close since.  So it affected me personally but I sucked it up for the greater good, since it was also an ab poaching hot spot. But I don’t really see a need for any new ones at this point until we can assess the results of the existing ones.

« on: February 04, 2024, 04:23:49 PM »
I sent a letter listing specific petitions that I opposed and why. In Monterey and Santa Cruz, it's all about protecting the kelp, but they don't make a very good case for how recreational fishing has a negative effect on kelp. Both those areas of proposed MPA expansion would have a significant impact on our sport.

I'm not sure about the Duxbury redesignation and expansion, but I opposed it anyway. I'm also opposed expanding Point Buchon north. I don't fish there but I think Montana de Oro is one of the few put-ins on the Central Coast.
