Title: Tuesday Night Kayak Fishing Clinics - 10/16/12 Crabbing Tutorial
Post by: ChuckE on June 20, 2012, 05:49:05 PM
Beginning 6/26/12, California Canoe and Kayak at Oakland's Jack London Square is kicking off it's summer series of Tuesday Kayak Fishing and Sailing Clinics hosted by yours truly.  It'll be an excellent opportunity for us to meet in a casual shop environment to address topics of interest for Hobie owners and those considering a Hobie paddle, pedal, or sailing kayak.  The free Tuesday Night Clinics will run from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.  I plan to have a different agenda for every clinic, but we'll start by meeting and greeting newcomers addressing the kayak fishing basics and any questions they may have.

Here is a sample of the topics with hope to cover in this series:

*  How to sail and fish from a Hobie Adventure Island or Tandem Island
*  Rigging Your Hobie for Fishing and Tackle Tips
*  Caring and Transporting your Hobie
*  Hobie Upgrades, Tech Tips, Mods, and Tune-ups

Tuesday afternoons (before the clinic) will also be an opportunity to demo any Hobie kayak on the dock, including the Hobie Adventure Island or Tandem Island at no-charge.  CCK usually charges a fee (refundable with kayak purchase) to set-up and demo their Hobie Island sailing kayaks.

Let's add to the fun by making this a potluck.  So please bring whatever food or drinks you'd like to share!

Got any DIY kayak rigging, fish finder set-ups, homemade rod holders, fishing tackle, or anything you wanna share with the group, please bring it.  The helpful sharing of knowledge, along with the "show & tell" format of these clinics is the fun part!

Have any friends new to the sport?   Please do them a favor and invite them to meet and learn from the group.

If you plan to attend, please post here or PM me so I can get a headcount.  Also, please let me know which topics you want me to cover for this Tuesday and for future clinics.

All NCKA'ers (and non-members) are welcome whether you own a Hobie or not.  The more-the-merrier for this weekly NCKA style hook-up.  I hope to see ya there!

I have bought 2 boats there.

Sweet!  You're welcome Dave.  I should be there after 1pm.  The earlier you can get there the better.  Just bring a towel and change of clothes.  I can to take you out on and show you the ropes on the Tandem Island and then let you fly solo on the single Island.

Saturday  I was at the launch when Chuck came back from solo sailing the TI...he was  giddy as a schoolgirl...grinning from ear to ear. My guess is the TI would be a great solo kayak. I will know soon as we hope to demo one tonight.

Daniel @ adventureislanders.com has a TI and it looks like it would be good for solo trips. It's like the PA - all is good as long as you're able to get it otw. Another option is to throw a seat in the back or a lawn chair on the tramp.

Thanks Chucke for hooking us up! Tested out my future new boat, the Pro Angler 12; SWEET ride!!!

Great meeting new NCKA prospects.. they kinda remind me of when I first got into the sport...

Daviators tacos were on point, Scotts pork buns made for a great appetizer and Jed's Cevichi.... well you knew it went fast!

Thanks ChuckE for putting this together.  I hope that CCK sees the potential in letting you continue for a few more weeks or longer.  Good time hanging with the NCKA brothers. The leap to the yak darkside has been a lot of fun ;)) Getting to test ride the PA was nice since I've never anyway but, since having a AI, the TI was sweet! Fun!!! I like that you can control the helm from the forward or aft seats!
The potluck was great, Dave's tacos, Jedmo's ceviche, Scott's pork buns, KFC! Bonus, my new castle 😜, Chris's pbr, and Leno's wife's banana bread was "off da hook"!
I hope that its going on next Tues. make it happen Cap'n!

I wanna thank all of you for coming down and supporting me, Hobie, and CCK.   The turnout was excellent.  I think I had the most fun of all.  The thrill for me was getting guys like Danglin, Hobie Dave, and Daviator on the Hobie Tandem Island for their first ride when the wind was blowing.  The look on G-Whiz's face right after demo'ing a newly unwrapped Hobie ProAngler 12 was priceless too.

Thanks to G-Whiz, Lino, Allen, Al, and PatR for bringing their toys for our show-n-tell.

The potluck was excellent as usual, and Daviator's tacos were tasty.

I'm already looking forward to doing it again!

My gal Pam plans to retire next year. That demo has me thinking, a Tandem Island would be the ticket for retirement fun. I visualize launching here in Vallejo or Benicia often. Once the TI is purchased the cost per outting would be less than $2.00. Don't be thinking divorce boat, she has put up with me for 43 years already. Girl got a high pain threshhold. Doesn't Hobie-Pam have a nice ring to it?

+1 on Hobie-Pam and TI for retirement fun.  Not sure how you figure $2 per outing though.  :-)  I've never sailed in Vallejo or Benicia but I've taken the PB there.  Sometimes it can get hairy there for sailing.  To many power boats or to much current for me.  But then you might know some areas that maybe more doable.

The $2.00 is for fuel to tow the trailer. The current and wind will be our friend. We'll just let the tide dictate which direction to go. The power boats really don't want to spoil their day by hitting someone. The TI will be so much more visible than the granite colored Hobie sport that I used out there.

Doesn't Hobie-Pam have a nice ring to it?
dave...

Excellent reward for retirement, to share with your other half. Hobie-Pam sounds good, Dave.

Haka bench will work great on the TI. Check out from Hobie forum how TI-ers wiggie their Haka. Cool videos too.

I can see how a gps log can help you with sailing.  I personally need to learn more about sailing.  Scott "GB2" is an experienced Hobiecat sailor and has generously volunteered to do an article on sailing is willing to do a sailing clinic.  I'm eagerly looking forward to it!!!

I will be missing the 7-10 & 7-17 events as I will be in a place a lot like Heaven but as hot as Hell :smt044

Yup.... the July 3rd clinic is cancelled since the following day is a holiday.

I'm all for planning our own hook-up just to devour your smoked salmon.  On 7/17, I'll be in similar place. :smt003

If you've got a Mirage Drive in need of repair or adjustment, bring it in for me to take a look.  Last week,  I completely dismantled and rebuilt a drive to educate myself.  It's not difficult at all if you have the right tools.

Getting ready for my long range trip as well as prepping freezers (defrosting, shifting goods for arrival of side of beef, hopefully more poultry, and...fish).  :smt001 BTW, I can set aside freezer space if you have any excess fish from your trip.  :smt002

BIG THANKS to Scott Great Bass 2 ....for putting on an excellent clinic on WSB fishing and AI Sailing Basics last night at Jack London Square.  We had nice group of familiar faces including a few new ones.  And thanks to all for bring munchies to share.  Lindsie's plum bars and Lino's Filipino pastries were especially yummy.

It's no accident that Scott wins a lot of derbies and catches lots on nice fish.  You can tell that he puts a lot of thought and great ideas into his rigging and tackle.  I know I learned a lot!!!

Pic#2 - Scott sharing his tips
Pic#3 - Even expert ghost slayers like Hai were there to soak up the knowledge

You are welcome Chuck. I had a good time. The AI is a fun boat to rig because of the challenge of working around the sail. For big game fishing, it is the ultimate fishing platform. Wish the albacore will come in range this year.

I had proposed doing a Regatta/Salmon Hunt Saturday, September 8, 2012 launching from Marin and sailing out the gate to Muir Beach with lunch at Kirby Cove on the way back. The salmon are staging now outside the gate but it looks like it will be a late run so a decent shot at an intercept in early September. I have it on my calendar. Let's get it on.

I could do it on the weekend before but it is a 3 day weekend and the tides aren't as favorable. I am booked up the rest of August weekends but could do it on a weekday. I think we would need the tide on our side to make it to Muir and beyond. Give me a weekday and I will make it happen. The salmon are massing in force outside the gate. It would be great to make them run the AI gauntlet.

A Kayak Crabbing Clinic is in the works.  I'm trying to coordinate the date with CCK.  Scott, Glen, and I will bring our gear and show how we all rig our traps a little differently.  The date we're shooting for is Tuesday, 10/16 to give everyone more advance notice and publicity on the CCK website.  10/9 is a bit too soon for many.
