Surprised to see a kayak angler out on the tidal marsh N of Hwy 37.  It was nearly dry at low tide, but fishable (?) at high tide. Never occurred to me there was anything in there beyond bait fish. What do you fish for in that area (West of Cullinan Ranch)?

General Talk / Sticky gooey hully rollers?
« on: February 05, 2023, 02:51:56 PM »
I've had my hully rollers 5 years or so, and I liked them.. but lately the rubber has turned into something like chewing gum.
Sticky, gooey, not nice stuff. Anyone encountered this and found an economical way to repair/ replace the rubber goo?

Safety First / Operating GPS on Standard Horizon HX870 VHF radio?
« on: November 11, 2022, 12:30:41 PM »
After 5  years, I finally broke down and bought a VHF radio but having some challenges learning to use it.
Anyone with experience inputting and removing waypoints on the HX870 or HX890 available to provide some advice?
I wanted to input waypoints for where I drop crab traps, then navigate back, delete the old ones... haven't figured out how to do that yet despite reading the manual.
Thanks in advance.

Given the controversy, i'm interested to know what method is used to sample King Crab (and maybe Dungeness too) in order to set fishing quotas and season length. I'm sure there is a technical report out there that describes the method, but its swamped by garbage on the internet.  There are experts in this group that can probably advise.
Is it some version of mark and recapture studies?

General Talk / ISO information about Cambria/ Leffingwell?
« on: May 23, 2022, 03:20:21 PM »
Searched the forums, most postings at least 10 years old.
Going to poke around the beach see some sites. Probably no kayak this time, but is there a better place to find info online about potential marine life spots?

General Talk / How is fishing at Salmon Creek to Duncan Cove?
« on: April 05, 2021, 01:59:23 PM »
It was unusually flat calm last week as I drove by all those beautiful beaches around Salmon Creek and up to Duncan Cove. The rocks offshore looked inviting. I don't remember anyone reporting fishing there and I saw no boats in the area. Why not? The beach was a little dicey, but launchable and the day was fine.  Its not an MPA.  I searched the forum and one mention of Thresher's off Duncan's Cove once. I saw some guys surf casting for perch, but no rockfish or crab fishing.  Whats the story on those beaches and rocks?  Some good reason people aren't fishing and crabbing there?

General Talk / Legs fall asleep from too much kayaking?
« on: December 15, 2020, 05:17:23 PM »
When doing a beach landing in surf, it is important to jump out at the right time and grab your 'yak....
but it seems that after yakking for 4 hours my jumping legs don't jump. In fact they are more or less asleep.
I find that after a long yak session, I have very little leg strength left and have to stand up very slowly and give my legs a couple minutes for the blood to start pumping again.
I don't know if this is because I'm old and wimpy, because I had back surgery, or if sitting for that long (even while pedaling) kind of compresses the nerves in my butt. I pedal a very old style Hobie Mirage with the flat (hard) seat.
Anyone else have this issue and did you find a solution?

Talking to a guy at the DWC, he saw lots of bait but couldn't get a bite. We were wondering what the stripers were chasing... it isn't legal to use a cast net on inland waters, but maybe a minnow trap?  Is there a legal way to catch your own striper bait in inland waters?

General Talk / Any Kayak demo days?
« on: September 01, 2020, 01:05:33 PM »
A buddy wants to buy- I'd like to suggest he go paddle several different boats, but under the circumstances, I don't know of any demo days or opportunities.  Anyone know what the current demo plan for CC or Headwaters is?  I really miss Chesapeake Light Craft doing demo days!

Recipes / Smoked Salmon Recipe help - too salty!
« on: June 14, 2020, 04:31:01 PM »
I'm getting better on smoked salmon, but I"m really struggling to get the salt down.
The basic recipe I'm using is 48 hours in 1 part salt, 1 part sugar, rinse thoroughly, dry to pellicle, then on the smoker at 220 until internal temp of 140 degrees (generally about 4 hours).
I read online that if the result is too salty, then rinse more thoroughly. I thought I did a very thorough rinse on this last batch, but it is nearly inedible
Before referring me to the search function, I've done that.
I tried the Ina Garten cold smoke (gravlax) recipe referred to. Do you notice that the salmon is brined and not rinsed before slicing and serving?  I had to throw out 3 lbs of over salty salmon following that recipe!

Also the internal temp of 140 is new. I used to just smoke for 3 hours and call it good. I think internal temp was probably 110 or so. That batch turned moldy in a week....

Help! Is there way to make the final result MUCH less salty and-
-what is the appropriate internal temperature for smoking? and-
- do you really transfer gravlax from brine to serving plate with no rinsing?

Thanks guys.
Tight lines.

General Talk / Herring in SF in May? Is it possible?
« on: May 29, 2020, 08:19:25 PM »
I got a 2nd hand report of herring spawn at Richmond May 27... the report was boiling fish, abundant sea lions and birds.... A herring spawn in May? Is it possible?

I have a new teenage driver, and have a habit of misplacing things.
I searched google and it looks like the car tracking devices were relatively expensive (90-$100) and require a monthly subscription fee ($19-25/mo).  I was curious if that situation has improved and if there is a reliable GPS tracker that doesn't require a monthly subscription fee?
I also see there are bluetooth devices, with an effective range of 100 feet, or dependence on the user community (Tile App).
I wondered if anyone has advice on a great car tracker or mini asset tracker that doesn't require monthly subscription?

General Fishing Tips / SMR clarificaiton...?
« on: May 12, 2019, 11:58:48 AM »
I'm nervous about fishing Monterey becuase of all the SMCA SMR boundaries.
I was at lover's point and watched a kayaker off the kelp beds pulling out little rock cod.. and I think mostly releasing them.. .but from what I see on the maps this is firmly in the SMR and off limits to even finfish take.  It wasn't evident that anyone was concerned about it... So, am I right? Was he firmly in a no take of any kind zone?

I was binging on "how to tie a shrimp fly for rock cod" videos and noticed that San Francisco shrimp flies tend to be tied on a 7/0 Mustad straight shank hook about 2" long. But other videos showed circle hooks, very short shank hooks, octopus hooks all tied on a 2 fly dropper like shrimp flies.  Can someone explain what the benefit of the straight shank mustad is for our region? Is this an adaptation or simply local custom?

I was thinking about clams at Bodega, and finding a place to poke pole up some eels.   Seems like the jetty might be a good place. Any advice for eels in that area? Friday tide looks low, Saturday is lower, Sunday is a -1.3!
