I can't wait for BAM!

Who will win with the biggest Striper?

Who will win the biggest Catfish?

Who will get stuck sleeping too close to Mooch and have to endure the snores?

There is only one way to find out......COME TO BAM!

Not even close...around 50.  If it doesn't get close this will be my last event, too much effort and money for 50 folks.

Well said Adam this Event is SoooooMuchhhhhhh fun I would register even if I wasn't coming to ensure future events.
The White's put on a First Class Event and they are nice people too :smt052. This event was my introduction to Kayak Fishing and the NCKA and there is not a better way to begin I placed 2nd that year and this year it woulda won me a kayak. This event is for everyone the food alone is worth the registration. Besides you get to fish and hang with the Mooch and you won't have the Real FisHunter :smt066 Hunting you down, your belly will hurt for days from all the laughing. Bill we really need a Fishunter Smiley

For those of you who may be on the fence:

I have always preferred to fish alone or with a small group and have always avoided "competitive fishing", but after my first big NCKA group meet/tourny at Elk...  all I can say is you have to experience it.  Everyone is mellow, very much in the spirit of friendly sport, and to the man everyone I've met affiliated with NCKA is top notch.  I've never seen a group of fishermen so eager and willing to share tips, hand out gear, or lend a hand when needed.

Lurkers...  come on out!  I'll even bring up my OK Drifter if anyone needs a kayak.

For those who are reluctant to enter the derby, I have a feeling you might change your tune if you happen to find yourself over a school of hungry fish.

And needless to say... Sean White knows how to throw a party!

I am eager to go because of the fun/food/beer (not necessarily in that order).  I didn't even think about the fact that I could win a new kayak.  Last year was my first year and I was intimidated by all the folks that had fished with each other for years.  That was until I got there and everyone was friendly.  I still can't believe how many people on NCKA are willing to share with strangers just for the love of the camraderie and the fishing.

People are offering rides, use of their kayaks, the other day 2 or 3 people offered to let me use their carts!!!!!!  Awesome!!!

Anyone that is thinking about it, you won't regret it, trust me.  I was "thinking" about it last year, and Dans964 talked me into it (after he gave me a beer).  I didn't regret it, and I will continue trying to make it to BAM.

I just got off the lake. I had two striper on minnows, one smallmouth on a minnow, and a catfish on a artificial worm.

The water is stained, but was between 65 and 70 degrees. Looks like it's prime for the event!

If you have never seen Stipers Busting the Surface you gotta go.I have seen fish feeding on the Surface but at Mendo I saw a bust that was a couple of Acres thousands of Stripers tossing themselves in the air it was amazing my mouth just sorta hung there I didn't even think of fishing or shooting pictures.

Thanks for the support guys.  It seems weird that the site continues to grow, everyone has a great time, I have better prizes than ever...yet attendance is low. As of now I have 43 signed up.  Economy???  Who knows.

Long and short of it if I took the time I spent at the MLPA, setting up Elk, and setting this up I have no doubt I would be winning AOTY and have WAF left to fish all of the events everyone else gets to go to.  If folks aren't going to make it worth the effort...I am going fishing.

I gotta chime in here. A lot of folks talk about Elk being the best NCKA event. After being a member on this site for a little more than a year and a half and having been to both Elk and BAM, I gotta say that while Elk was a blast, my first Bendo at Mendo was still my favorite. I had never been to an NCKA event before and had only owned my yak for a couple months when my wife and I showed up. We were shocked.  :jawdrop
EVERYBODY was so nice to us! Mooch and FishHunter put me on a limit of striper, everyone shared the best food I have ever eaten while camping, and everyone treated us like old friends even though we had just met. BAM is an awesome event! I don't care if you have never fished for striped bass before, or if you just bought your first yak yesterday, if you come to BAM you will love it and you will learn more about fishing, paddling, and NCKA camaraderie than you ever could just by lurking and showing up to the occasional hook-up.

Bendo at Mendo is not to be missed no matter how much of an old salt or newb you are.  :beer3

Could you post the latest sign up list for BAM.  By knowing who is signed up we could all get the word out to those who are not signed up.  It would help recruitment and assure many more BAMs in the future.

With lessons and loaned kayaks being offered up we should be able to get at least 80.

Thanks

Hello everyone.  I just mailed my check for my son and I today. This will be our 2nd time kayak fishing. We have a couple of used kayaks and some old fishing gear.  We have never been to mendo and don't even know how to fish for stripers but we'll give it our best shot.  I got so excited when I caught my 1st LMB at Clear Lake that I flipped my kayak racing back to camp a couple of months ago.  We are looking foward to the food and fun (maybe even falling in the drink again).

I can only echo the same sentiments as everyone else.  BAM is a fabulous time to be had.  Last year was my first true NCKA event and everyone was so welcoming.  Not to mention I had some newb luck flowing my way as I was in contention early.  Sadly I couldn't upgrade and fizzled away. :smt010

I've got a friend that dropped his check and paperwork in the mail today.  It will be his 1st time on a yak, should be interesting as he is a clumsy one.  I've invited my father for 2 years running but both years he's had lame excuses.  He just doesn't appreciate the kayak fishing.  I've also invited my father-in-law for the last 2 years but he's had legit reasons - prior commitments.  He's in next year if it happens.

Curious Sean, what are the attendance numbers for years past?

Michael

It seems like everyone is willing to help the newbies, so here goes my concerns about mendo.
1) Is it easeir to get bit using minnows or artificial (where do I get minnows)?
2) Are there any electric plugs (I need my coffee pot)?
3) Can I make bait with a cast net (Is it legal)?
4) Any showers?
5) We will have a BBQ grill and feed those that we can bribe to help us.

It seems like everyone is willing to help the newbies, so here goes my concerns about mendo.
1) Is it easeir to get bit using minnows or artificial (where do I get minnows)?

Despite the fact that half of my fish came on artificials last year (read: lucky), I think it is easier using minnows.  I am buying my minnows locally (San Jose) before leaving for Mendo.

Quote
2) Are there any electric plugs (I need my coffee pot)?

I can't remember but people will be making coffee on the stove.

Quote
3) Can I make bait with a cast net (Is it legal)?

It has been discussed on the board before and I don't think this is legal.  Others will speak up if I am wrong.

Quote
4) Any showers?

I don't think so but the lake makes for a fantastic place to rinse off.

Quote
5) We will have a BBQ grill and feed those that we can bribe to help us.

Bribery can go a long way. :smt002  Sadly I don't have an extra yak or I'd offer it to you.  In fact I'm having to borrow one for a friend.

Hope to see you Oct. 4th.

Michael

PaulR-

Way to go... I'm glad that you are going to jump in on the celebration. As far as what to use, Michael said it best... live bait is great. If you can find the schools of fish, tossing flukes can work really well. If you can't make coffee on a camp stove and MUST have your electric coffee maker with you... let me know and I can bring up a generator for you to use. Casting net... think more like using a dip net for shad. They are pretty small up there. And honestly, I wouldn't waste my time making bait. Showers, you have a couple of choices... bring a solar shower or you can drive over to Kyen and use the showers over there. Need any more tips...? Just ask...

And that pretty much goes with anybody out there. I know that there are a lot of great guys on this board that are willing to help. If I can't help or can't answer a question, I'm sure we'll be able to find somebody out there that can. This is a great event and you shouldn't let the fact that you are new or inexperienced keep you away.

We have never been to mendo and don't even know how to fish for stripers but we'll give it our best shot.

Paul, last year's BAM was my first time at mendo, and my first time fishing for stripers.  Unfortunately for me, I didn't do what you are doing now; I didn't look for advice.  I didn't bring minnows and people were offering to let me use some of theirs. Go figure, that shows what kind of people belong to NCKA!  Fishing in a tournament and your "opponent" offers to help you.  I was hard headed and stuck with my lures.  I got skunked and still had an excellent time.  I am not saying lures don't work, they just didn't work for me.  Plus, isn't it kind of relaxing drifting a minnow around?

Good luck.  I am sure with all the advice here, you should do fine.  I learned my lesson last year and returned in Nov. with some minnows and got some bendo action.

See you there.

I would rather not.  It closes on the 30th.  if I let folks do on site reg then there is no incentive to reg. ahead of time.  If people don't do advance reg then I have no idea of how many are coming.  If I make an exception for you, then its not fair to everyone else.  I think i am running out of gas/patience...sorry. Don't forget" Da Bling"  for a lucky angler..... :smt002

I'm workin hard on the 08 version right now.:smt119

These are the last two years.

Dude, Where's the one with the striper eating an anchovie? Going old school again this year and will supply a couple big cats for the fish fry. :smt003

Decided to hook up the trailer so I will have two extra yaks on hand. So just look for the guy with huge cats at his camp site. For any of you who don't have a yak or experience come talk to me and we'll get you hooked up.

Sean, We going to have a swap meet again this year? That might perk some interest and I would voulunteer 10% to the cause.

Just talked to a pro fisherman who says that he already ordered his belt to fit the buckle and he sounded damn serious..... :smt004

Ha ha....I'm totally stoked!!

I will bring extra pfd's, seats and paddles, seems like someone always forgets those essentials.  Maybe the portable piranha fishfinder as well.. Gotta love those Humminbirds.

Don't really know who Francois is talking about, but did purchase a wide, natural, cowboy tooled leather belt this week, that would go good with that shiny buckle, and I am, ahem, a Pro....a force to be reckoned with.....not to make anyone nervous, but stripers have been known to flock to me just ask Steve S. (on second thought, don't.  He will likely tell the actual truth!)

This will be the rare derby I can attend where I'm actually able to compete.  Remember HMB 2007, when I had to cut 3/4" off my ling cod's tail to make sure we didn't have to listen to InsaneDuane snivel all day.  Duane, you wondered why I paddled back out when I saw you waiting anxiously on the beach with your fish?

SEriously, I am so looking forward to community and camaraderie as only NCKA can provide.  Who else is bringing instruments?  Guitarzan?  Danglin?

I'll get new strings for the 1952 Guild, Frank told me not to bring the Alembic and 68 bassman amp.  I have a saxaphone too if anyone can play.

Now just have to figure out what menu items for the weekend...........

I'm in. Check sent today!

And if anyone on the fence STILL needs coaxing then just take a look at this picture!

That is me with my BAM1 (OG, Baby!) 1st place striper. Prior to the day this pic was taken I had never even seen Lake Mendocino and had never caught anything in freshwater other than bluegill! I also did not have a fishfinder. So even the newbs got a great chance of walking away with a brand new kayak and a pimpin' belt buckle.

Neither of which I got, BTW...lol.  :smt010 :smt003

If anyone needs a Yak I will bring my Frenzy. It is small but fishable with rod holders and such. I also have a spare seat and rack space going up from the east bay Friday morning. PM me .

Carl
I don't know if you or anyone else can help. My son and I are getting ready for the big weekend and now my older boy wants to go but doesn't have a kayak.  Can he still go with us without being in the tourney (he doesn't have $55).  He needs to borrow (or rent) a kayak and just wants to go fishin'.

What is a good set-up and bait for Kitty fishing?

What are the Tourney rules on fishing two rods if you have a two rod stamp?

kitty set up was the same as the striper set up....minnow and a 1/4-1/2oz. egg slider...they say the BIGGER ONES don't waste theitime with cut bait...they turn "preditor" after reaching a large size.
TWO POLES are a MUST!.....you may get a double...see pic below!

I don't knowduane, but after living in SF for 5 years or so, I gotta suspect the three barmaids in the 2d picture.  I think the one with her arm around you has a five-o'clock shadow, my man.

That's funny Duane... Yeah... I think you should stay away from the spawners too. Especially at this stage of the game.

WTG Don, you made it!  :smt004
Scrolling through this thread, your anticipation was palpable. Seems like you deserve a break...without a shark shield.

This isn't the year for me to attend BAM, but hopefully I'll see some of you guys out at the beach to close out the salt season in the coming weeks.

Good luck to all!
