Just wondering how many of you leash yourselves to the kayak while out in the ocean. It seams like a good idea to me so when I flip the boat and I am sure I will at some point it doesn't get away from me. Is there any reason not to do this? I am just asking because I didn't see any mention of this in the safety first thread. Maybe I just missed it? Thanks.

Not a big fan of leashing to kayak. Can get you tangled up if you go over . kayak will usually not move to fast from you in the ocean.  where you cant get to it.  Always wear a PFD. Will always leash my paddle to the yak though.

Just leash your paddle to your kayak.  You will naturally hold on to it when flipping over and remain connected to your kayak.  The only leash I use is my paddle leash.  More leashes can be a hazard if your tangled up in them when you flip over.  It has happened, no joke.

I don't run any leashes, but in my pre-Hobie days I would leash my paddle.

Thanks for the info guys. I did have the worry of getting tangled in the back of my mind. I do have a leash right now that hooks to the paddle a rod and my gaff. I have never had to use the gaff yet as I have never made it out onto the open ocean and had a fish bid enough that I could not net yet. I don't feel confident enough in my self rescue yet to head out into the big blue. Heading to del Valle this weekend for some practice though and hopefully catch some stripers to.

Good plan - it can heat up out there and you'll want to get in the water, anyway.

WORST IDEA IN THE WORLD

I only leash my paddle, everything else is sacrificial. I paddle into the ocean every time, ok with losing EVERYTHING I take. It can all be replaced. It only takes getting wrapped up in leashes once, pfd or not, and you are dead. Happened to me once, and luckily I had a crew of very experienced guys right there to free me up and help me back to shore. Just my two cents, take it for what it is worth.

Second'd.  Wife and I went out a couple weeks ago to do just this, and it's a good time out, great place to practice.  Find a little inlet away from the random drunks renting power boats and do your thing.

RE: leashing yerself to a kayak: I'm with the choir here that it's a bad idea.  That said, I do use a paddle leash, and have a line cutter attached to the outside of my PFD in the event I get tangled.

I only leash my paddle like everyone is saying. When I catch a big ____ I just toss my paddle overboard and don't worry about it getting in the way of landing that big ____.

I only leash my paddles but i'm starting to think I may not need to or if I do i need to shorten the leash. mine is too long and it can wrap around the kayak 2 times. yeah i think i will keep the leash but shorten it.
