UCSB grad...  I spent many a day on the Goleta pier and local beaches catching fish.  I'm old enough to say that back then, kayaks were not a thing.  With the LPNF also really close, I added rabbits, quail and doves to the menu too.  Oh wait, I did get a degree in the process but that's a side note to what really matters in the long run.
