Title: Frank J. Miller Memorial Striper-Hali Day at Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor Aug 24

The 1st Frank J. Miller Memorial Hali-Striper Day at Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor
                                                        August 24, Saturday
At the Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor
1900 Stenmark Drive, Richmond, CA 94801

Dear Friends,

For the past 2 years Jack Johnson, myself (Michael S. Yamagata) and Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor have sponsored the first Hali-Striper Tournament in 2017. Last year, 2018, with the help of Kevin Nguyen (SimplyCook), we sponsored a Hali-Striper Day on August 4th. We were very fortunate during the last 2 years to have had Capt. Frank J. Miller and the Fury to help us provide live anchovies and his incredible knowledge of fishing in the Bay. For 30+ years Capt. Frank, as we called him, fished the Bay and was a master with the tides and when and where to fish for different species. Last year, on August 4th, we decided that we did not have time to sponsor another tournament and made it into a Hali-Striper Day w/ live bait. Capt. Frank told us about the tides and when to hit the Stripers at the Brothers. For those of you who were there, that was incredible fishing. Josh Crumb and his son Colton hauled in some great fish. Colton is a hardcore teenage kayak fisherman. He hauled in the biggest stripers.

This past January 5, 2018, we lost Capt. Frank who had a rapid onset of cancer and chose to have his last memories of the harbor as those of good times and good friends. Capt. Frank was the spirit of Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor and our fishing community. During his last 2 years, I was lucky to have spent many times visiting with Capt. Frank on the Fury catching stripers as he was going about his business. He would tell me how lucky he was to be able to live at the Harbor. “It’s so peaceful and beautiful here”. His wisdom of the Bay and awareness of maintaining the ecology of the Bay ecosystem was something close to his heart.

In recognition of a Wise Man, the owners, residents of the Harbor, Jack Johnson and myself have decided to name this year’s Hali-Striper Day; The Frank J. Miller Memorial Hali-Striper Day at Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor.

With the generosity of the owners of the Harbor, we will be able to provide a unique and incredible kayak fishing experience in San Pablo Bay. Camping (RV, camper, tent) will be available for out of towners for both Friday and Saturday nights at no extra cost.  Rodney and Kelly Jue came all the way from Fresno and had a blast!! We will be putting on a “to die for” Saturday evening party. Jack Johnson has offered to donate another pig for Caja China Roast. We will be providing most of the main food and may request people attending to bring veggies, salads, etc.
The Clubhouse has been renovated and has become a destination spot for weddings, parties and other events. On most weekends there has been live music at the Clubhouse Bar. The Nobilis Restaurant had gone through some changes with a new chef, Ryan, who has been blowing people’s minds with his savory local favorites and fusion cuisine, along with the favorites of burgers and fish and chips. There will be more people at the Harbor because of the restaurant, but that will not change the spirit and quality of the day. We are fortunate to use the Clubhouse facilities; thanks to the Harbor owners.

We are charging $30 for the event and live anchovies will be sold at a reasonable price. If you are attending bring a live bait container. It can be something very simple that immerses in the water to keep the bait alive.

We chose the date August 24th because it was the only Saturday in August with a 3.9’ High (flood) tide at 7:54am and the Low 3’(ebb) tide at 12:14pm. This will be a great opportunity to fish the Brothers for a few hours with the ebb tide. Last year the stripers were boiling at the Brothers. We were dropping down with a 6oz. torpedo weight and 2/0 live bait jigs and the stripers were hitting the bait as soon as you dropped down. We are hoping that we will have a repeat this year.

For kayak fishermen who have not fished the Bay and have wanted to learn in a safe environment, this is your opportunity to talk to and fish with some of our veteran NCKA Bay kayak fishermen and get some great San Pablo Bay fishing in early fall.

We recommend that you bring a VHF radio or if you are fishing without a radio, be close to others. If you have never fished in the Bay or the Brothers/San Pablo Bay, we will be giving a safety and informational talk on Friday evening regarding the optimal times to fish the ebb tide for stripers. We recommend that you attend our Friday evening safety meeting if you are a first timer.

Bring your family, good spirits and fishing fever to this event. The Harbor is also home of Jack’s incredible dogs, Shadow and Cherry. The dinner/potluck will be at the Clubhouse on Saturday evening/night and the bar will be open. There will be a variety of beer on draft, wine and other mixed drinks for sale.

Come and continue this great early fall tradition and Capt. Frank will be there in spirit; he never left.

Aloha,
The Owners of the Harbor, Darryl Henline, Jack Johnson, the staff and myself, Michael S. Yamagata (da Bruddah) and Oh, Capt. Frank Miller!

Hi all! Last year, my wife and I attended this Hali/Striper fishing event.   I gotta say that Michael and the guys really put on a great event!  We are so honored to have met Capt Frank Miller, and now,  be a part of this 1st annual Frank J Miller Memorial Striper/ Hali Day!  Fishing last year was epic.  And that is putting it mildly.   Fishing near the Brothers islands is exhilarating! But like Michael said, if you've never done it, you may want to stick close to someone.   While my wife and I didn't get "Big Fish", we caught tons of fish.   The stripers were thick.   Then it was time to come in and relax..... the dinner spread that we had was outrageous.   So much food, so much good company and so much fun.  It was an event we won't soon forget.  My wife and I were so thrilled when Michael called us to invite us to another event this year.   We can't wait! See you in August!

Hey Chris,
Thanks for your interest, There’s already a lot of interest in this event.
It is in such a beautiful area of San Pablo Bay that many do not know exists.
With live anchovies the Brothers are gonna be hot time for Stripers.
Trying to keep Capt. Frank’s love of the Bay and this special place that he called home to be shared by others.
Aloha,
Michael da Bruddah

So glad to hear this will be happening again this year.  Brought our tent trailer out last year.  A beautiful hidden spot on the bay.  The clubhouse is a huge space perfect for for spending time off the water with a bar, full kitchen and plenty of seating.  Jack and a few residents of the harbor made us feel at home and what a pleasure hearing stories and gaining knowledge of fishing the bay from Frank.  We too caught lots of stripers at the Brothers and got a few undersized halibut in the flats.  And very cool seeing the monster Sean brought in late in the day.  Michael, you are a great host and look forward to seeing you in August.

Hi Josh and Colton,
Thanks so much for your good words and great pic of Colton with his big stripers about the Hali-'Striper Event from last year. We were greatly saddened by Capt. Frank's untimely passing and it only seemed right to name this year's event after Frank; as he was the heart, soul and spirit of this special place that he loved so much. You and Colton hauled up some big stripers last year, more to come!!!
Look forward to seeing you guys again for some great fishing, eating and re-connecting.
Take Care,
Michael

Aloha NCKA Bruddahs and Sistahs,

I know that we are all busy, maybe, some less than others. Lots of great fishing, Albion 2019 coming up this weekend, summer flying by. I was down at the Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor recently with my older son Jonah to show him the Harbor and to talk about the logistics of our August 24th Capt. Frank J. Miller Memorial Hali-Striper Day with one of the harbor owners Daryl Henline. Attendees will have access to the shower and bathroom facilities in the Clubhouse. We are encouraging families with children to come. There is now a herd of Nubian goats w/ 4 little kid goats who are very friendly as well as a herd of multi-colored chickens that are out free ranging and running around during the day.
As we walked around, I am always struck by how special and beautiful this place is!!! Jack Johnson, the harbormaster, is getting a whole pig again for the Caja China and I am trying to see if we can cater Marvin Lau for his dynamite pulled pork. Marvin, no pressure!!! We are pulling out all the stops for the Party on Saturday evening. The Clubhouse Bar will be open with draft beer, mixed drinks, wine as well as other non-alcoholic beverages. There will be a number of couples fishing together, fathers and sons, 1st timers fishing the Bay and NCKA Veterans. As of right now, we have about 30 people signed up or promised me that that they will be coming for sure. Hey, you guys, you know who you are, send me your $30 via PayPal or mail me your check to my home address. We are anticipating more attendees this year, through word of mouth, and Keith Nguyen has generously offered to post an article about the August 24th event on his “The Lost Anchovy Blog” and will be joining us at the Harbor this year; Mahalo, Keith!!
The Harbor has limited camping space for bigger campers and RV’s. The Nobilis Restaurant has been open for a while now, will be open both days Saturday and Sunday; so, there will be people coming for lunch/brunch who will not be part of our group. We are offering free camping for out of towners or locals for both Friday and Saturday nights. Jason (Fishguts) Peralta  will be bringing his whole family again this year and staying for the whole weekend. I am hoping that there will be more families and children this year. That’s what Capt. Frank would have wanted.

Will post list soon. They’re around 32 people signed up. Some will be coming with their whole family. I think we will be around 50 people.

Aloha NCKA Bruddahs and Sistah,

Have some good news just talked to Capt. Frank’s sister Maryann and daughter Danielle and they are coming to the August 24th event. Maryann told me that Capt. Frank lived o fresh oysters on the grill.
Does anyone know seafood wholesaler in the Bay Area where I could buy a large quantity of fresh oysters?
Lemme know. I want to have this on our menu for the Party!!!
Mahalo.

I will get the Pig On Friday after I get back from Getting live bait in the morning.

Aloha NCKA Bruddahs and Sistahs,
Here's a list of who is attending. Right now they are 52 people who will be fishing!!!
We are having a Safety/Informational Meeting Friday evening at 8pm at the Clubhouse for 1st timers fishing this area of San Pablo Bay. Jack Johnson, the Harbormaster, Anthony Ancheta and myself will be facilitating this informational meeting to make sure you know where to fish when. this is the only NCKA Fishing Event that has live bait. We are asking that you make a donation for the live anchovies and if you are coming as a family to make a donation as we are already exceeding our cost for the event. Jack will be at the bait holding pen next to the Fury and will be ready to scoop up bait stating 6am on Saturday. There is some room for big campers and if you want to camp out in a tent, their are a lot of places to camp. As of today, The Harbor owners are installing a big aluminum walkway and platform so that we can launch our kayak directly from the parking area and water to wash down the kayaks after coming in.
We are planning on staring with grilled appetizers at 4pm/Happy Hour and dinner will be around 6pm. We will have a short special program before dinner starting off with a Native-American Blessing of the land/ancestors by good friend Janet King of the Native-American Health Center in Oakland, Capt. Frank's sisters MaryAnn and Toni and daughter Danielle will share some stories of Capt. Frank for those who did not know him. East Bay hardcore rock'n/roll/blues band Hans Raag and his Strange Angels will be rocking the house down. There is a fire pit in the parking lot and the owners ask that there be no fires at the campsites. You will have to sign a waiver before you go out fishing.

Here's a list of current attendees as of today:

That's right mf'ers!  I signed up first!  (Although its Chris, not Curt but you can call me anything you want).  I'm bringing up the RV and maybe a buddy.  Is it okay if we pay his $30 on arrival as he is a last minute entry?

And lastly, I saw your 6oz torpedo and 2/0 double bait rig recommendation.  Any other rigs/baits recommended?

Hey guys,

I’m tying live bait rigs for you 1st timers to the event and halibut fishing.  I have 1/0 and 2/0 hooks on 3-ways depending on the size of the anchovies.
If you are using popsicles, then I have some 3-way rigs with stinger hooks as well.

Come find me.  I’ll be there Friday and Saturday.

Kevin

Ahhh! That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification, Kevin! I'm not much into using bait for fresh water fishing, except when fishing with kids, then I will help them with bait. As far as this weekend, I will try some live anchovies and I will be bringing some spoons to jig for stripers and some grubs to troll for 'buts! That's how I used to fish salt water down in SoCal, where I grew up (Oxnard - Channel Islands) - from the jetties, piers, beaches and charters :-) Are there any WSBs in the Bay?

I was coming back in the bay this afternoon and the coast guard broadcast an alert for the kayak fisherman making boaters aware of location and the event. Thought that was pretty cool.

Was an awesome event, was great to see all the old crew and meet some new guys. Congratulations SMOA, Yaknchef and those that got fish. Very little action all day but ended up with a 22" at the end.

Good job Dustin.  You got em.  I had the skunk all over me yesterday.

Kevin didn't realize you were out there, guess I didn't recognize you although the guy working the oyster grill looked familiar....

Thanks Jack and Michael for putting this event on, had a great time exploring a new spot and enjoyed some good food and company!

Mahalo nui loa, Arigato gozaimasu,

I am grateful for a hugely successful 3rd Hali-Striper Day at the Pt. San Pablo Harbor and the 1st Frank J. Miller Memorial Hali-Striper Day. 52 people signed up as kayak anglers and 47 made it out on the water. Also present were Frank’s oldest daughter Danielle and her 2 kids Noah 10yo and Trinity 16yo and sister Mary Ann Grant. You might have met Noah dishing up live bait next to the Fury. Trinity and Danielle helped made the great Bakesale Betty Cole Slaw and helped me prep for the dinner. Noah is only 10 years old and ended up hooking 4 stripers off the back of the Fury the last one was big enough to break the braided line!!I I think his Grandpa Frank was watching over him!! Great kid!!!
Before going any further I want to thank the owners of the Pt. San Pablo Harbor, Rob, Daryl and the other co-owners whom I don’t know by name for opening up the Harbor to the NCKA Community and to honor the passing of a great Bay charter Captain Frank J. Miller, who left us too soon this January 5th. Special thanks to the Harbor staff Robert Edney, Bobby and Harbor grounds crew who put on a heroic effort and erected a 1st class kayak launching ramp with a floating platform in an amazing 2 days before the event!! Thank you, guys, for busting your asses with heavy machinery, welding, metal fabricating to make it possible for our guys and gals to launch their kayaks from the parking lot area!!! The owners made it possible for the campers had access to the restrooms, showers, clubhouse kitchen for 24 hours and we were able to use the great Clubhouse space that included a great bar staffed with Harbor resident bartenders. They were busy pouring East Brothers Beer Company from Richmond, CA, kegs of Bo Pils and Red IPA; some of the best beer in the East Bay, which was the perfect compliment to the grilled oysters!!! I also want to thank the following people for their contributions to this event: Janet King, from the Native-American Health Center in Oakland, CA for her Opening Dedication to honor the original natives of the area and her personal blessing from the Native-American community. My nephew Jason Yamagata for standing at the grill for over 3 hours straight and grilling some 20 dozen WA State BBQ fresh oysters with his home-made ponzu sauce, grilled mini organic sweet and shishito peppers, made 25#’s of Teriyaki chicken for the kids and non-pork eaters. If you were on the deck eating oysters, Jason was grilling them for you!! Marvin Lau, for letting me use his Native Sons BBQ membership so that I could purchase the live oysters for the event at a restaurant wholesale warehouse in Oakland. Thanks Marvin, I’m glad that you could come by even for a short time!!!! Jack Johnson and Anthony Ancheta for picking up the live anchovies in the Fury from SF and to Jack for grilling the 100# pig that was 3 hours late for dinner. What were you guys doing out there?? Hans Raag and his Strange Angels, hardcore East Bay, rock n’roll/blues band for cranking out that great music all night long!!!Cam Huong Restaurant in Oakland for their great Vietnamese Chicken Chow Mein!!

Mahalo to all from the NCKA Ohana/Community who attended the event and to the following NCKA fisherman for hauling up some big Hali’s:
1st place: Jared Alchoncher (Sickmanofasia) -  17.58 lb. Hali
2nd Place: Dave (HobieDave) Royston - 10.18 lb. Hali
3rd-Sean Albright (Fishboundsa) - 8.97 lb. Hali
4th Dustin Vorkoeper (Yaknchef) - 8.7 lb. Hali
5th Jimmy (JDR1234) - 5.09 lb. Hali
6th FishnRod - 5.42 lb. Hali

Thanks to Danielle Miller for her gift of $100 gift cards to Jared and Hobie Dave.
If you would like to personally thank the Pt. San Pablo Harbor owners, you can write to:
Daryl Henline   email address: daryl@pspharbor.com
I want to encourage the other attendees to post you pics. I was too busy to take any!!!
Mahalo nui loa, Thanks very much in Hawaiian

Michael da Bruddah

Just wanted to say thank you to Michael for putting on a great event (and everyone else involved) and Jack for passing out the live bait at the crack of dawn.

This was my first NCKA event/meetup but it won't be my last.  Caught my first Halibut and a handful of rockfish.

Everyone I spoke with on the water was great, definitely an awesome community.

-Side note, I can't offer any advice on Ocean/Bay fishing but anyone that wants to get into bass fishing or duck hunting feel free PM me, I'd be happy to share my limited knowledge or show you a few spots.

Cheers!

Congratulations michael on a well organized event. I was able to make the festivities but not the fishing. Great tribute to
Capt. Frank J. Miller. It seems he was a very special person to the harbor. I know he would be moved by such a great event that honored his life and memory.  :smt001 :smt001-- TLA

Michael and everyone who participated - way to go!  I so wish I could've attended and will plan to next year.  It's obvious in reading the reports that the spirit of NCKA was alive and thriving at the FJMMS-H Day.  Reading accounts of the brotherhood, the feast, the tribute and the fishing makes me very proud to be a part of this community.  Well done.   :smt001

Great now I know why the grill guy looked familiar and that Cam Hung is still in business and making some good chow mien!

Missed the weigh in, what was the length of Jared's fish?

Here's the only picture I got it's of the pig just before it disappeared back to the grill, had to leave before it's second appearance.... fudge.

Thank you Michael, Jack and the whole Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor community for hosting an incredible kayak fishing event. The Frank Miller tribute was very heartfelt and well represented. Pam and I had never been there before, so last Wednesday we came to check out the road and facilities. We had lunch at the Nobilis restaurant, must say, the oyster po boy sandwich, was awesome, no key lime pie that day, but sure did enjoy one, on Friday. Raydon and our, RV were both welcomed and given prime parking. I checked out the dock Wednesday, didn't look at all ready, like it was on Friday, once again impressed. it's been a while since I've launch from a dock, was nice to once again, be dry from days start to finish. The oysters Jason grilled topped with a tasty sauce, grilled peppers, chow mein and eventually the pork, all were really good. We enjoyed the beats, the band put out, Raydon and Nelly showed us how dancing is done. Oh by the way, the fishing was fun and productive too...Nice picture on page 5, taken by ElefantDude.

Aloha NCKA Bruddahs and Sistah,

Wanted to share this great picture of Jared Alchoncher and his 18# Hali that he hauled at last weekend!! Jared’s paternal grandfather is from Hilo, HI and Jared went to U of Hawaii Hilo. We grew up 16 miles North of Hilo in a small but vibrant multicultural sugar plantation community with Japanese, Filipino, Portuguese and Native-Hawaiian neighbors. My brothers and sisters were lucky to have lived with so many kind and generous neighbors!!
This great picture took in front of the Pt.San Pablo Harbor looks like Jared is in Hawaii, but there’s no Halibut there.
Aloha,
Michael da Bruddah
